Problems with distance

I've been using Nike plus/running on iPod touch for ages and trusted distance..... However friend challenged me on it and so used a phone app to compare, then used car to measure. Nike says 8.8 miles, car and phone app 7.65miles, anyone else experienced this? Can't see a calibrate function anywhere

    There is a calibrate button. Usually at the very bottom of the run. After you push end but before you push complete. Then you can adjust the miles to what it is.
