Increasing your mileage

I thought we could share some tips and ideas with each other for increasing mileage so we can all reach our goals.
If you're thinking of taking up running then I highly recommend the Couch to 5k program. It's how I got started a few years back and it really works. There are so many free apps that will give you audio cues, or you can just use a stopwatch. http://www.c25k.com/
I use this website to plot routes in advance, but there are a lot of others you can use too. I like this one because it shows trails as well as roads. You can sign up for free and save a whole bunch of routes. https://www.plotaroute.com/routeplanner
If anyone else has any tips they want to share then please do

I've always been taught that you should never increase your mileage by more than 10% per week. So if you run 10 miles week one, you could run 11 miles week two, 12.1 miles week three and so on. In order to make the 1000 miles this year I plotted a full year's plan increasing miles 10%/month. And now here I am with plantar fasciitis and potentially off running for at least a couple weeks. I think I did it to myself because the past couple months I've been running more than usual but never stopped to think about this 10% rule. Dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb.1

I have thought about the couch to 5K, I need to look into it. I really want to take up running. I am torn between wanting to do it and trying to decide if I need to wait until I lose some more weight....but running may help me accomplish that. Anyone else start running while significantly overweight and have any success with it?
