Exercising to Help Glucose Levels?

My doctor told me I would need to exercise for at least 30 minutes 5-6 days per week to help keep my glucose levels in check. I'm on metformin and progesterone for PCOS with insulin resistance.
Since I already exercise, I didn't think to ask him why exercise would be beneficial as far as glucose is concerned. I just nodded and said, "Yup! I walk and swim all the time!" Bad me.
Can anyone shed more light on this? I read something about glycogen and how muscles use the glucose online, but everything I found was on bodybuilder sites, and that doesn't apply to me at all. One completely confused me, saying muscles release glucose into your bloodstream while you exercise, so then they need the glucose later (wouldn't that just balance it out?)
I have my yearly A1C in a couple of weeks, and I'm really hoping it's back down around 5. It was 6.1 last year, but I've lost around 60 pounds and have been taking metformin since then. /crosses fingers
