Ouch! My foot hurts!

I am going to start this off with saying that I have had xrays on my foot and there is no fracture and yes~I have been fitted for my shoes...
Problem: The top of my left foot is killing me! The discomfort runs along the bones between my first two toes. Running on gravel makes it worse.
Once I stop running, an hour later my foot is just fine. There is never any swelling, bruising or anything! It just hurts. A lot!
I cannot stop at a water stop because I cannot resume running again because of the discomfort. As long as I keep on moving, I am alright.
I am puzzled. I went to the Dr. and he gave me some pain reliever (Vomovo) and showed me the door. Kinda patted me on the head and said "Good luck on your marathon".
My marathon is Oct. 20 and I am getting scared. I know there is no fracture because of the xray. Any suggestions as to what you think it might be? Or better yet, what I could do to make it better?
That is my dilemma~

Change shoes and see if the pain goes away.
Lace your shoes differently to see if the pain goes away. Check through the options on this site for ones that will allow you to loosen the lacing near the toe box.

A Morton's neuroma?
Usually is pain between 2nd and 3rd, or 3rd and 4th toes.
You put a small pad on your insole, just behind the toes.0
