How many solids

So Miles is almsot 8 months old now. I usually give him 1-2T of oatmeal in the morning with 2oz of fruit and about 2 oz of veggies at night. I was just wondering what others were doing. The doctor said he should be close to 3 meals by 9 months. He still thinks food only comes on a spoon and has no interest in finger foods yet, and does not have the pincher grasp yet. I'm sure it will come with time. He still drinks about 30 oz of breastmilk a day too.

Definetely offer him a 3rd meal and see what happens. If he doesn't want it or not ready for it, he won't eat it. My firstborn was a boobies man and he was late to eat solids, and extremely late to eat finger food. My baby girl is a different story. She turned 7 months old and she eat solids like crazy. Her daily intake is 1-1.5 oz meat a day and 2 full serving fruit/ veggie, which is almost a cup when I purée it. I decided not to start cereal yet, but I gave her meat right from the start. There are fruits and veggies which she would not eat unless I mix them with beef of chicken. Just like her mommy ;) Also she LOVES avocado ,and she eat twice as much if there is avocado in it. Somehow I never thought of feeding beef and avocado back than. I think their instinct working well and they eat what their body needs if it is offered to them.

I think all babies approach solids differently.

At 8 months, Max was eating 2 meals per day (3 oz each) and snacks and breastmilk. At 9 months I have him eating 3 meals a day plus snacks and breastmilk.

To encourage the pincher grasp, I put puffed rice on Max's high chair tray. He loves it and it doesn't have strange ingredients like baby puffs do. I also gave him those Mum Mum things to help him understand chewing. He loves them.

Other "chunkier" food that works for us is avocado cubes, squished blueberries, banana chunks, homemade yam fries, and toast cut into strips. I just throw it on his tray and he devours it. Sometimes I just give him things to see what he does with it.

In the end, just do what feels right for you. Eventually all of our kids will know how to eat (seems pretty far away for me right now...) and remember - You know your little guy better than anyone else :)

I agree with what Laura said. Jaxon is 7.5 months and usually only eats 2 meals a day but I've started encouraging a third and he's taking to it pretty well. I will give him baby food twice for sure and throughout the day I will give him the baby mum mum rice rusks, yogurt melts, string cheese, yogurt puffs, or bites of whatever i'm eating. He'll pick up the big things and gnaw on them just fine but is just now starting to grasp the hand to mouth concept with the littler stuff.

Just do what you feel comfortable with. Some of our friends with multiple kids started solids and table foods way sooner than we have but I wasn't very confident with giving Jaxon anything but baby food till recently. Over the past month or so he's been learning how to "chew" and he's eating better and swallowing better so I'm more open to giving him new things but am in no big hurry :)

I let both of my kids go at their own pace. By 6 mos my oldest was eating tomatoes and vienna sausages (he hated baby food) now Jordan isn't all that interested in table food yet and she is 7.5mos. We offer her oatmeal that has fruit in it at breakfast time and a jar of baby food at lunchtime and dinnertime we do not set whether its fruit or veggie but I try to to do one per day like if she has fruit at lunch we do veggie at dinner. I let her have the whole jar at both feedings if she wants if not I do not worry about it I use the 2nd stage right now. I also introduce 1 new item each week. I try to feed her from the table and sometimes she is receptive and sometimes she isn't she still has some problems grasping. We tried the rice puffs but she didn't like them. When we were on vacation we gave her bits of brocolli and she really liked that. I have had doctors tell me with both kids just keep trying to feed them baby food and the more teeth they get start with table food. Just to stay away from dairy, soy, eggs, and strawberries until they are 1 because they seem to be the most common for deadly allergy reactions and in my area there are few people who are qualified to open a baby's airway using a tube and its best to wait till they are older. Of course I have given Jordan tastes of mashed potatoes and ice cream not thinking that they have milk so we seem to be fine with milk products. Now if I can just keep her out of the dogs food, toys and treats we will be better.

Thanks ladies. I will try some of those mum mums or rice puffs. I did get some gerber finger food things and he totally did not get it! I also tried bananas, but I will keep at it. He will eat more food if I give it to him, he's loved everything but avacado. Thanks for the advice! I just think he would like the finger food once he gets the hand of it, he's very independent!

Someone got us this for Benjamin when he gets older. It might be a nice middle-step to try.

I was always told it takes a baby 15-20 times of trying something before you can definitely say whether they like it or not, so don't give up too early with new foods. Definitely offer more food if they are interested, however don't cut down the milk intake. Food is all about feel, texture and taste at this stage and less about nutrition. Give food to practice with, don't worry if it gets pushed around, spat out, squished between fingers or run through his hair, that's half the fun and part of learning. Also once you've established that he likes something, then the next few times make it lumpier. Everything will eventually become finger food. Keep pushing the healthy foods and snacks as long as they don't interfere with milk intake, but don't worry if they don't get eaten.

Vienna Sausage for a 6 month old? Just curious, what brand is it?
