What does "inches lost" really mean?

I have friends who say things like I've lost 4 inches or I've lost 12 inches?
What exactly are they measuring? :frown:

    I took all my measurements when I started (waist, hips, bust, thigh, calf, upper arm, forearm, neck) - some people take more or fewer measurments. When we refer to inces lost, it's all those added up, looking at where we started vs. where we are now. While I've lost 15.5 inces since April, I've only lost two on my waist and three on my hips.     Yep - what sgouti1 said. You can't really compare inches lost between two different people because one might be measuring just a couple spots and one might be measuring a bunch. My trainer does my measurements and he measures neck, bust, waist, hips, right arm, left arm, right thigh, left thigh, right calf, left calf. My cumulative inches lost is going to be higher than someone who only measures waist, chest & hips. In 5 months I lost 26.75 inches but again that's taking the data from 10 different places.

    So, if I only take 3 measurements, my numbers will be lower than if I take 4 or more. I guess it's all variable among people but as long as a single person is consistent, it is easy to track. Thanks for your replies.:happy:

    Exactly. Just pick your spots and measure those same spots every time, then you can gauge your own progress. It's also really hard to measure yourself, so have someone help you if possible. You also want to find "landmarks" so you know you're getting the same spot. For your waist measure right at your navel; for your bust measure at the biggest spot; for your thigh if you stand straight with your arms straight down you can have someone measure you right where your fingertips end, etc. If you don't measure in consistent spots you won't get consistent results.
