Did I exercise for at least 20 minutes?
Did I stay within my calorie budget for the day?
Did I keep track of everything I ate and drank?

With Rick out of town, I'll kick off today's discussion.
Why did you start weight management? What prompted the start? And why continue?
For me it was when I weighed myself after new year. First time I can remember ever being over 90kg (80's I could rationalise to ageing, 90's was pure carelessness). It woke me up from my lack of attention and prompted me to do something.
I expand more in my daily post (if people want).
So, What's your Why?

Exercised?: Yes. Walked 5 Km in 38 mins (hills).
Calories?: Yes.
Tracked?: Yes.
Today was a PB To make the 35min mark, would need to make 7:30 min average per km. Can do that on the downhill, but keeping it on the uphill is the challenge.
Got to fly the new toy today (FPV racing quadcopter). Flown by looking through goggles that receives live video feed from an onboard camera. It flew really well, kept good control and landed without incident. I now need more batteries so I can fly more often and get much better (should have arrived by now, but are delayed in the post ).
@Slimpossible007. Awesome. This "no diet" diet type feeling is what we are going for. Fantastic results. As you exhale more of the weight, I am sure you will find an activity that you enjoy. The smaller you are, the more fun that can be had in activity.
(Yes, you exhale weight. As it burns off, the blood sugars are turned into energy, water and carbon dioxide (CO2). You exhale the carbon dioxide (CO2). You burn most of your daily blood sugars, keeping the body warm, running the brain, digesting food. Unless you are a super athlete, less than half the daily calorie burn is exercise.)
@jesscutedol. Well done for donating blood. Not enough do. Well done for keeping to schedule despite it being a bad day.
@trixsey1. Good walk, but try to avoid the thunderstorm habit. Thunderstorms are unpredictable and potentially life limiting. A point to remember if in the same breakfast situation again is "You do not have to finish everything on your plate" (we are not in war time rationing - your next meal is virtually assured). Go for the high-fat, high-protein items first (egg, bacon, sausages, grilled tomato) - eat a little slower - and you should be full enough to not want the potato or bread products.
@pribud. You are awesome. Your comments semi-prompted todays discussion topic. Most give up on a new years resolution within the month of January.
@cardio_enthusiast. 13km power walk, with ankle weights, WOW! Hopefully the discomfort that made you limp the last part subsides soon.

What prompted my weight loss journey
For starters it was not in January lol
It was actually one August photograph, when we were on holiday, I typically take the photos of the family which means I am rarely in them. On this occasion I was paddling in the water pulling (with a long rope) an inflatible boat with my kids in it, My hubby snapped the camera .. I didn't even see the photo till maybe a cpl months later, I had flicked through the pics a few times but I didn't recognise myself and just kept passing over it. Then one day I realised that the kids were in the water and there would have been an adult there. I spotted the "pink balloon" I said to my hubby "who is that" he thought Id gone mad, and the dreaded words were said "it's you" .. ...
I started my diet just before Xmas, and I calorie counted my Xmas dinner, I refused pudding, I refused wine, basically I shut everything down and ate too low ... one bad habit changed into another. I have now managed (i hope) to get the balance correct!
No I do not need to live on 700 calories a day .. I can lose weight an 1600 . and even higher if I wish
anyway party tonight for my hubbys friends 50th .. no dinner at home as there is a buffet .. HELP!

This is a great discussion topic @craigo3154
Well, there are a few things that prompted my weight management.
In January 2017, I developed a really bad case of plantar fasciitis from multiple factors, by mainly running on hard surfaces. It has been awful. I knew that in July, my partner was going to take me to Norway and I was determined to lose that darn 15-20lbs.
While I was unhappy about my weight, I'd become pretty complacent about my weight. Why? Because I am tall. 5'10" and I could still get away with wearing my usual clothes--except for a couple of jeans.
Needless to say, I did not lose that weight. In fact, I think I gained another 5lbs before the Norway trip. Anyway, we went to Norway; a beautiful country with beautiful scenery, and stocked with tall slim people.
When I was in Norway...
I. Felt. Like. A. Whale.
I hated feeling like that, and I was unhappy with the way I looked in some of our pictures. My arms looked SO SOFT
This was not me.
I'd developed aches and pains in my joints(I definitely think that this is inflammation from bad food habits), the plantar fasciitis, increased neck pain, a few photos that I did not like, and most disturbingly; jeans in my closet that didn't fit without me having a muffin top
I knew that I had to do something! I needed to feel and look better AND be healthy. I needed to get rid of the inflammation in my body. Also, my boyfriend is Norwegian and we travel to Norway twice a year. There is no way in heck that I'm going to feel uncomfortable, while there, again.
So far, so good. I've been at this for 6 weeks and I am making progress!
Cheers!4 -
Why did you start weight management? What prompted the start? And why continue?
I started because I wanted to make many changes in my life I was already a big guy in the past around 220-230 and then my grandma died and I took it badly and hit 277highest recorded (No idea if I was more cause I didnt check weight often) I just didn't care about my body and was on the path of self destruction.
Well eventually I came to peace with her death and looked at myself and all I saw was wasted potential for my body and mind so I decided I wanted to slim down and break out of my shell the best I can so I started a goal to reach 170s by the end of september regardless if it was unreasonable it was a goal to fight for.
I started off weightlifting and using my treadmil but my diet still wasn't on point it was a lot better than it was but nowhere near what it needed to be so I started logging in a notebook and from that to MFP and I joined this group to help me with my logging and then my treadmil died so I moved onto hiking and had my diet a lot better now it's near perfect for my body I'm down a good bit of weight.
And then I got a goal I wanted to be a chef but lacked the funds for culinary school and didn't want to get into massive debt and coming from a military family and living next to fort knox I decided I wanted to join the army as a culinary specialist but that requires my body to be even more fit so that's the goal I've been working towards and hope to reach it soon so I can begin my next chapter of life but cardio and fitness will always be a part of it.
The thing I've noticed the most is how differently I'm treated when I was in the 270s people were just so rude they wouldn't really talk or even look at m., Now adays people will start conversations or hold them and I get compliments it's a lot different and I certainly enjoy it.
I went from 277 to 198 and I started sometime in the first week of Janunary, My blood pressure is set in the 120s/70s,from 150/91 I don't eat chips or sugar nor do I subsitute it with artifical sugar so basically I only eat healthy with a rare cheat meal for family events and even then I make it a point to stay under my calorie limit.
I'm still dealing with my grandmas estate & probate stuff but that should be ending soon and I no longer just eat or try to drown it out instead I workout or just go over there and do yard work.
Thanks for all the motivation UAC and keep it up everyone.

@craigo3154 - so true about the meal - "You do not have to finish everything on your plate". I ate the eggs, bacon and sausages, my mate had the hash browns and tomatoes (I don't care for tomatoes). As you said, they are high fat/high protein food, although it would have been healthier grilled, not fried!
Glad to you got chance to fly the new toy - sounds cool!
I have to say to everyone above and those who follow with their stories of weight management, that it's so brave of you all to write your reasons for everyone to see.
You are all so amazing.
As for me, I gave my reasons in my first introductory thread last month. I won't dwell on this much as it was a pretty dismal time in my life, but I knew that changes had to be made and drowning myself in guilt, grief and self pity wasn't going to make these changes happen on their own.
My starting weight, was 13 stone. I'm only 5'2" and have a small body frame, the weight was hurting me physically and I suffered from various health conditions, including high blood pressure, joint problems, and gall bladder problems.
I started going for walks with my dogs and the pounds started to shift and I dropped to 12 stone, then I decided to try dieting along with the exercise.
I did a 1000 calorie diet for 6 weeks - which was stupid now I realize and did some really brutal workouts in that time. I lost more weight at first but started to feel weak and a little lethargic.
I upped the calorie intake a little and started following some home DVD workouts and then got into jogging and that was my lifeboat more than anything else.
I stopped thinking about losing weight and focused on how the jogging made me feel - I started to feel alive - it's hard to explain in words I guess...
It was hard to jog at first, I could barely go for more than a minute without stopping but I built it up over time - it became a challenge, and I loved it.
Today, I guess I'm a little obsessed in working out in some form or other and I hate having to take a rest day, but it is needed obviously.
I do look forward to seeing this last stone or so drop off me, but I don't weigh myself that regularly to see if it is shifting. It's the workout I like to focus on more than the weight loss itself.
I do tend to overdo it and push myself a little too hard at times, but I'd rather hurt physically from a few muscle strains then hurt emotionally. The muscle strains will heal and I can deal with that.
Anyway...
19th Aug
Exercised?: Yes
Calories?: Yes.
Tracked?: Yes.
Did the 30km bike ride today - 3 and a half hours. Lots of hills, and I mean HILLS! Totally brutal and some I just couldn't make it, lol, so had to walk up!
The ride was lovely though, had great fun, although there's not much other than trees, trees and more trees, a few ponds scattered here and there, and loads of cows and sheep!
Got back, had a light lunch then headed out with the dogs. I've only been back in the house a couple of hours in fact, as I type this, so it's been a full day.
Tomorrow I'm off on a 25km hike with my son. Have to be up early as I want to take the woofies out for a good hour or so before I head off, as I'll probably be too shattered to take them out when I get back! - Monday I'll have a rest, I think!
Total Distance Travelled:- 42.5km
Total steps walked today: 17,390
Total calories burned: 1915
Total calories consumed: 1299
Hope you all have a good day.........xx6 -
Exercise yes -5km walk plus 1hr gardening
Calories all logged and within allowance
Very interesting question and answers.
I'm ashamed to say that I can't remember exactly why I started trying to lose weight . I've been doing it as long as I can remember - even when I was in my teens and (looking back at photos) VERY slim.
This most recent attempt to get to grips with the problem started when I had to have a tumour removed . It turned out to be benign but the long and stressful wait for results made me take a long hard look at the way I eat. I want to be healthy and I want to be there for my kids.
Exercise has never been a problem but food definitely is. Also I get depressed about how I look so I comfort eat - vicious circle !
I've finally realized I have to change how I eat for good. Still have to manage to do it though.4 -
@Slimpossible007 , enjoy your party :-)3

Tracking: yes, including 5 slices of bread. Still not cracked the addiction. I haven't had it in the house and today my husband bought a loaf for him and my daughter. I could resist.
Calories: stayed under although I wasted most of them. Ugh!
Exercise: a walk and a 45min spinning class.
Well done to those of you who have been brave and shared. Life is hard eh. As a wise person recently said to me "we all have a story". Sorry for all the pain and hardships you've been through, shared and unshared. Hopefully this community is healing. Weight struggles are seldom as simple as gluttony.
For me, I've yo-yo'd through the years between a healthy bmi and being overweight. Lots of travelling in my 20s helped me get to my lower weights (living up 8 flights of stairs in Spain with no lift/elevator and a healthy outdoors lifestyle and the food in Vietnam helped).
Anyway, for various reasons I'd gained some weight before getting pregnant and was overweight. During my pregnancy I felt so nauseous and the only thing to help was eating. To those who haven't experienced that I know it must sound crazy but a biscuit here and there stopped me vomiting at work and let me carry on... But meant I gained more than is recommended. After having my daughter my bmi was obese so I set to work to lose it so there's my why: to be at a healthy bmi. Why? I want to live a long and healthy life. I don't want to get a disease linked to being overweight. I want to be there for my family. While I was on maternity leave I lost 45 pounds. After returning to work in January I gained back about 10. Why? Yes, I've never been in the winner's circle but I never went crazy and haven't been far off. After getting frustrated and so fed up, this month I reset my target and calorie limit to lose 2 pounds a week rather than 1 and hey presto the scale is moving again. Phew! I only wish I'd changed it sooner. Why keep going? The same reasons. If I gain weight eating an amount mfp calculates should be making me lose I may also have some maintenance struggles ahead! My metabolism must be rubbish. But I have the uac to help me. @RangerRickL you know you've got us all forever right?4 -

The time has come for me to leave this challenge. It has become second nature for me to exercise every day, log all my food, and stay way below my calorie limit. I'm sure it is easier for me to stay on track, because I'm a bachelor, live alone, no kids, retired, etc., so no one, no job, to plan free time, meals, whatever, around. I feel like I've become a broken record posting yes, yes, yes, every day!!
This is an awesome group, and you are all doing great....keep up the good work!! ~ Bill5 -

@fightingthetideofaging. So happy that UAC has set you up with the habits that will keep you healthy in the future. This is the goal of UAC.
You have been amazingly consistent. I am sure you have amazing wisdom to share, as to reach the consistency you have shown take courage and determination. Hopefully you will share more of your wisdom in your own time.
Sorry to see you leave, but happy it is because you feel your path is clear.
You are welcome back any time.

Congratulations @fightingthetideofaging it is easier when it's just 1 person. I have to admit I am enjoying not being tied to the electronics. This morning I got up and ran my errands bright and early. I do need to focus more on my core muscles as I am now sitting so much they are getting flabby. Weight may be staying the same but I have more muffin top.
Why I started my weight loss journey my DR informed me I couldn't be a potential organ donor for my daughter. My daughter informed me I would be the fat mom at her wedding. I now weigh less than her but the new job is not physically demanding. I need to get back in the competitive mode.
I am not logging into mfp daily so I am going to count myself out for this month.
I did well this week this week was a hot dog roast at the bank. We have it for the customers lol anyway I had a diet soda. I guess a few of my coworkers took bets if I would have 1 or not. Jackie goes she is so glad she knows me so well. I wondered why they were pushing the hot dogs so much but I am not a hot dog person.
A few of us are checking out hiking trails 2 of us are very gung ho the rest of the group wants to hike then end up either at a restaurant or bar. I like the hiking part not the after part so we shall see.
Your all doing a great job!!!2 -
Did I exercise for at least 20 minutes? yes
Did I stay within my calorie budget for the day? yes
Did I keep track of everything I ate and drank? yes
The inspiration for me to lose weight was that I was having a tough time doing activities I like, hiking and camping, for instance.3 -
Bill, @fightingthetideofaging, I'm sorry to see you go. You're one of the quieter members, but seeing your yes, yes, yes every day has been inspiring to me. I wish you the best.
The reason I started dieting, is I'm a tango dancer, and the dresses are sleek. I was becoming matronly, and I was ashamed to wear my clothes. You could see every bulge and roll in those dresses. So there it is . . . vanity. But, I started weight lifting to put on muscle so I could eat more, and now like the weights more than dancing. On my own, I always put the fat back on, so UAC has helped me so much. And now you hikers have me and my dog out every day.
@craig, thanks for asking the question, and thanks to everyone that responded. I love reading your stories.4 -
19- August-2017
Exercise: yes. I did 33.5km of bike riding. It was a relatively flat course, but we maintained a moderate speed.
Calories: yes, we went out for brunch and I able to enjoy my food selection and stay within my budget. Win. Win.
Tracking: yep, tracked everything.2 -
Why did you start weight management? What prompted the start? And why continue?
My sister gets all of the credit for my starting this journey 9 weeks ago. She'd been living 13 hours away for close to five years until our mom suffered a critical diabetic low that ultimately took her life in a matter of weeks. We were devistated and sis decided to move back here to help me handle Mom's estate.
I had just delivered my sweet baby girl a month before Mom passed. During my pregnancy, I had a scare that we thought for sure was a miscarriage. Thankfully it wasn't, but I didn't want to take any chances so I took my doctor's advice to hold off on exercise for a couple weeks even further...I never started again. Coupled with the fact that I started pregnancy by being 35 lbs overweight, it wasn't pretty and I was feeling overwhelmed with parenthood while also feeling like I would never find the drive to lose the weight again. I used every option I had to avoid seeing my image...mirrors, photos...you name it.
My sister is the only person who stepped in to confront the problem. She basically cornered me one night after hanging out just the two of us to tell me how worried she was about me. She was so sincere yet forward about my weight. But, what sticks out the most was her concern for my happiness. She knew I wasn't honoring who I truly am and offered to do anything she could to help me. She's the one who suggested the 8-week Total Wellness class that I joined. It was life saving and uplifting just when I needed it most. The same week I joined the class is when I found this challenge. I have found the will to begin my journey through this group and especially because of her love for me. Nikki---you're my hero and I love you to the solar eclipse and back!!
Continuing this path, and not turning back is for me, my daughter, my sister who is an amazing cheerleader, and for my Mom who can't live a strong life now-so I will to honor her. Thanks for caring, UAC friends. And for being here to share and to listen. This group is vital to so many of us. I'm glad every day to have this group to be on my team!3 -
Today is a pass.
I tracked everything and got some walking in, but did go over my caloric budget by about 150 kcals. My struggles to slide backwards got the better of me today. Coming back to this group and reading your posts inspires me. Normally a day like today would totally undermine my progress and derail me. Oh no! This gal will not go quietly into the night! Tomorrow is a new day. I WILL make it a better day.
I know what not to repeat. I have the tools and knowledge that I need. It's not the end of the world and I don't have to choose to give up. I'm feeling loads better already! Have a wonderful night friends.1 -
Exercise, tracking, and calories done for the last two days. Zumba yesterday. Today was just light exercise. Back is bothering me. Must have done more moving my daughter than I thought.
Today's subject:
I have always been on or off of a weight journey.--- I was the fat girl in kindergarten. Had some thin years but more overweight and obese years. --- but what pushed me to drop 70 pounds and keep it off these 7 years was my sister going into hospice care after a long illness. It hit me that emotional eating was going to ruin my health and that life can be very short and my family needs me. @fightingthetideofaging it is awesome that you are secure in your habits. I know that I can be great for periods of time, but emotional eating is a monkey on my back. MFP challenges and daily accountability are so important to me. Thanks @RangerRickL for taking this on! - and @craigo3154 for your backup , @hawkins410 for being my challenge buddy.

3 yesses today. Needed a rest day so lots of leisurely paced walking and some stretching.
I discovered a love of health and fitness while trying to lose baby weight after my second. I lost 35lbs and felt so strong and confident. Then got pregnant again a few months later. Bounced back pretty quickly after my daughter was born (thank you extra breastfeeding calories!) but maintaining has been an up and down journey. About a year ago we started to let go of a lot of the healthy habits we had made and I put on 15lbs. I tried here and there to get it off but didn't have much success. I felt so uncomfortable in my body, disappointed I had lost so much strength and was unable to fit in my clothes comfortably with no budget to buy more. I lost sight of being proud of what my body could do and instead was focused on what it looked like... that is not the example I want to set for my girls. About 2 months ago I was ready to get back on track and take control of my health and found this group about the same time. The accountability has been exactly what I needed. Down 6.5lbs and I'm totally ok with it being a slow process to adjust our lifestyle and find balance.2 -

Hi Bill,
You're not a broken record at all. You're an inspiration! You've taught us all about gym classes we never even knew existed and we'd love to know how your latest venture of c25k goes and beyond!1 -
@fitastic2day great pic. So true.2
-
Did I exercise for at least 20 minutes? Yes. A dog walk and a night up The Strip
Did I stay within my calorie budget for the day? Yes
Did I keep track of everything I ate and drank? Yes
What's my why? I retire in 18mths and I want to have good practices and habits set up so that I can fully enjoy retirement.2 -
pass day ....
I done well at the party buffet, but unfortunately my glass seemed to be self filling and I have absolutely no idea how much I drank, I have put a number in my diary, but it could be higher or lower than that .. just a best guess and my best guess also puts me over on calories anyway
I did manage to get my exercise in thou 35 minutes spin bike before I had my bath to go out and dancing at the party3 -
My Why............I was continually gaining weight. I was put on medications that sped up that process I was frantic, I then became heavier than my husband who is 6ft and big built. My self esteem and confidence was suffering. I knew I had to do something, then on New Years when the resolutions came up I normally would have passed but something inside me said to go for it. I refused to say I would lose an amount of weight but like I reported yesterday I made the resolution to be lighter and healthier at the end of 2017. Well I am definitely on line for that as I had my surgery and will soon be able to get fit and I am down almost 30lbs.
Todays recap
Went to fall fair and walked around for about 40 minutes( was there 1 1/2 hours but took rest breaks) so exercise yes
calories yes but did use a little of the exercise ones
tracking yes
water yes
Thank you everyone for sharing your why's. Reading them was very inspiring.4 -
Did I exercise for at least 20 minutes? Yes, one-hour walk
Did I stay within my calorie budget for the day? Yes
Did I keep track of everything I ate and drank? Yes
What prompted my start: looking in a mirror in a hotel room and not being happy with what I saw. (end of 2013)
What made me continue until now: the energy I get from working out, the fact that I am more happy and confident with how I look, the vision of my dad who went from highly active and fit to overweight after stopping with exercise, the wish to be physically active for a long time to come especially now that I have a daughter.
