(A few gyms have started a green belt between white and blue, but those years ms are rare and 90% of the BJJ community has been resistant to it. I am firmly against it.
Belts only started in BJJ in 1952 (20+ years after the art started becoming separate from Judo) with the Gracies. At the time you had White, Light Blue, then Blue. Black belt was introduced until 1967.2 -

In judo, adults generally go
White
Blue/purple
Brown
Black
Kids have yellow, orange, and green after white to give them more opportunities to advance. My club is one of the few that awards these belts to adults too, which I actually think is pretty great! It means advancing every 6-9 months instead of remaining a white belt for years.

My class is VERY similar, except we don't break down the degrees of brown belt, you receive your brown belt and have to wait generally three years until you can take your black belt. I take Shotokan Karate.1
