Realistic weight-loss goals often mean the difference between success and failure. For example, short-term goals provide immediate challenges and benefits. You achieve your long-term weight-loss goals as a result of your short-term successes. Goal setting also means selecting a feasible weekly weight-loss target, and developing strategies for restaurant and party scenarios. This is an ongoing group discussion that explores each member’s evolving goals. Conversely, members could discuss the obstacles they face in trying to lose weight like having to work long hours or taking care of an elderly parent – and then brainstorm ways to try to surmount them. Members can post a S.M.A.R.T. goal for the week such as, “I will take a brisk walk for 30 minutes three days this week.” Sharing the results can help members refine their goals and commit to them until the next meeting.
