Tell me your goals

I just posted in the class check-in but I feel like this could use a thread of it's own. What are your goals for this week/month/year? Martial arts related or not, I find I stick to plans better when I've told people about them! Are you trying to lose weight, achieve a new grade or just struggling to remember the latest form? Most importantly, HOW are you going to reach your goal?

I will go first - my goals for the next year are all aiming towards me getting my black belt before I turn 40 (I'm counting down - 17 months to go!). I really don't want to be a fat black belt, so I'm trying to lose weight to get myself to a more normal size. I enjoy weight training so I'm going to aim to keep 2-3 sessions per week to maintain muscle mass, but from past experience I know that I need to eat right if I'm going to have a chance to lose this weight, so I will maybe cut down the size of the weights (weight training makes me hungry).

Just for this week, my goal is to go to the gym at least 3 times for some strength training, but also to research a more martial-arts specific training program instead of the bodybuilding- style training I've been doing.

And to stretch! I never make enough time to stretch!

I've plateaued in my weight loss for about a month. I need to

    - rededicate and get better at tracking my calories.
    - Move more try to get 5 workouts per week done
    - be the best TKD instructor I can be

-I'm trying to control my stress/anxiety levels.
-Working on getting an aerial cartwheel - I'm giving myself until age 50 (i'm 44)
-Trying to practice more on my own even it's just for 20 minutes at a time
-Gain basic acrobatics skills also before 50 (backflip, better butterfly kicks, front tuck flip, bridge to handstand)
    - Get more sleep without taking sleep aids

    Continue with fertility treatment
Get a new job (I am stuck with a job for 5 years I don't like because I did not want to start a new one while trying to conceive)
    Start a new martial art
Get happier n focussing on things going well instead of focussing on what is wrong
Manage to train 3 to 5 times a week in months without a treatment. do Long walks during treatment months as long as the pain is under control.

-Advance to Orange belt by the end of this session.
-Short term weight loss goal of losing another 13 pounds by the end of the year.
-Jog/walk a 5k at or below 42 minutes by the end of the year. (a bit slow but my PR is 37 so that's big for me)

    Immediate:
Train 5 days/week, rain or shine
    Log all food intake

    Intermediate:
Lose 15 more lb and start maintenance
Continue competing (at least 1 more tournament...).
Test for 5th dan (should be next spring)

    Longer term:
Open a small club (~10 students) and start teaching part time again.

I want my bjj Blue belt before I turn 40 (next July).
I also want yellow in judo.

Currently I'm working at getting my fitness back after injury and being consistent with getting to class and extra rolling whenever I can.

    Long term:

BJJ Blackbelt. I'm halfway there at five
years so it looks like I am right on the average for time.

Hit the podium at IBJJF Masters Worlds. I felt good about my chances until I got injured 3 weeks out. I fought well in a close match, but I know I can do better

    Short term:

25k Mountain Trail run in February. One of my BJJ training partners talked me into. Still don't know why I said yes.

10k in March - if I survive February, the 10k locally should be cake

Sprint triathlon in Summer. Looking like July or August.

Win an MMA fight no matter how many fights that takes. First fight looking like some time after the first of the year.

Do some local Ammy boxing and not get killed. I think I am st more risk there than MMA, because my striking is getting to be ok enough for MMA, but boxing against a boxer could get ugly especially when I can't rely on my grappling.

oh I have one other semi-short term goal! for my birthday in April, I bought myself a week movement/acrobatics retreat at an eco-lodge in Costa Rica. I'd like to have some semblance of abs by then. That gives me about 6 months to work on it.

    1. Be more consistent with my training, specifically in Taekwon-Do. Learn my patterns for the next belt. (Running and boxing seem to be consistent. *patting self on back*)
    2. Add back yoga class(es) and strength training (Sworkit app) that I WAS doing a few months ago but fell off the wagon.
    3. Organize my teaching curriculum better so I'm not scrambling the day of my class.
    4. Get to the point where all things are in balance, ie, not stressed too much but not so that I've got nothing pushing me, doing but not doing too much, training but not over-doing it to the point of injury, satisfied with where I'm at so that I'm not frustrated but not so content that I give up.

I have one to add, I really want to be able to do a pull up. Just a single one will do. That's another goal that would be more achievable if I lost weight first. That's going on the 'before I'm 40' list!

I recently broke through this barrier myself... I bought a set of resistance bands, and worked on them 2-3 times/week consistently for a while off and on. When I really started getting results was working on negative pull-ups. I'm now up to 3.

Ooh, thanks. I will look at resistance bands. One of my gyms has an assisted pull up machine but I can only get there if I can get out of the office at lunchtime. I could use resistance bands at the smaller gym near home.

@luis how long before 40? Like how long do you have to reach your pull up goal? After hurting my leg I started doing some upper body exercise (which I never do) and I’m wondering if I could ever get a pull up too

I'm also using the assisted machine at gym but I really need to be more consistent with it. I want to be able to do a handstand more, so far I can only do those against a wall.

No problem! Here is the set I have - they are holding up very well! I still use the purple for finishing sets after I max out with my 3 chinups. I started with green, then progressed to purple negatives, then on to full negatives, then on to chinups. Haven't used the black yet.

March 2019! It should be enough time but I need to drop a few pounds before I have a chance. I got to 50kg on the lat pull down yesterday, I still have a long way to go before I can lift my body

    1) Get back to my lowest weight- I've recently had a complicated family situation, which ended in a close family bereavement. I just didn't have the headspace for weighing my food during all of that as well as organising the funeral, and budgeting everything for it. I went to class whenever I could, and that was it. But this week, I've finally caught up on my end of all the admin and paperwork relating to that, and Monday was day 1 of tracking.

    2) Get Choong Moo (coloured belt form in TKD) to competition standard, because it's my second weakest.

    3) Become a better teacher of forms. I am known for my technical precision in performing forms, to the point other students approach me for help, but I'm not so good at explanations.

    4) Survive the physical component of black belt testing- the bank accounts cannot withstand another funeral!

    5) Pass black belt testing.
