2nd place and lost to an experienced black belt... Very respectable!!! Congratulations!2

Did you have other matches? How did they go?1
-
Nice!!!2

Hah, it was just me and him, and just one round. Everyone else was a lower belt and got tossed in a different division.
It was a great match though. It was a 90 second match, and when they called "45 seconds" we both looked at eachother like, "whoa only half way?" lol.
Sparring is incredible. You can drop a day's worth of energy at the drop of a hat.1 -
Maybe the best part of the tournament, is that even though I put 40lbs back on, I still don't get treated like a "plus size" competitor anymore. During a conversation someone said something along the lines of, "we are all about the same size" and I was like, "wow"3

I found another pic of me in their image dump
I was standing around helping hold for board breaking
Competitor is one of my younger classmates breaking a stack of 10 boards with a downward elbow strike.2 -
Good pic - and got to love demo boards.0

Congrats! You beat everyone else that didn't have the courage to compete!4

Congrats on the competition! Going up against an experienced black belt, wow! I'm so, glad it went well overall.0

It's not the first time I've sparred him This is sort of a rematch from a year or so ago, only back then he was the red belt lol. You get a lot of familiar faces at tournaments because the TKD community is only "so big".
Just for fun, facebook "shared a memory" with me from two years ago, when I was just a fledgling orange belt. This was my first sparring match ever. My opponent is a 6'5 ex military guy. I still spar him every 3 months at belt tests.

How did you feel after the competition? Were you glad you went through with it after all?0
-
Of course! I love sparring!!
The only time I ever feel defeated is things like poomsae and board breaking. It's up to too much opinion. Sparring though is fun whether you win or lose (except that time I lost to a green belt... I swear I won. I was a little upset at the judges).
Next tournament is nov 11th in NYC. Time to double down on my training and undo all of this damage I had done to my body recently. I put on 50lbs... and it really does have an impact.1 -
I've had some matches where I was defeated by the judges calls too - VERY frustrating when it happens.

Our intramurals also have a funny scoring system they made up on their own that has no relevance to olympic sparring.0
-
I'm not a huge fan of the Olympic system myself - and the fact that they have flip-flopped on points so many times doesn't help either.0
-
The current rule system is okay. Pushing is now allowed to avoid clinching. Clean punch 1 point, clean kick 2 points, head kick 3 points, and adding a spin to any kick adds a point.
At our intramural all kicks are one point no matter where they land, but for some very stupid reason, push kick does not count.0
