I won't be doing world class. Those guys are nasty. I would literally get my teeth knocked out lol. Even the competition in the free sparring is pretty nasty because it gets such a wide variety of competitors from different schools. So far all of my TKD injuries have come from the governor's cup XD

Personally the higher level competition is what I enjoy most.. win or lose, I usually come up to higher levels just by being part of it.

I added this tournament to the events list.

I'll probably be posting about state tournaments come jan/feb/march as well. Not sure if any other members are here in the northeast, but I attend tournaments in NY/NJ/CT/MA

Great - keep 'em coming. I'd really like to fill the event board with members' events - who knows when folks will run into each other!

I'm in NY, but a little further from NYC than you.

Still drivable distance then lol. I'm in Albany. I actually hate going to NYC because it's so crowded and parking is always a nightmare.

I just found out today, that yes, I will have head kicks in my division.

There's also going to be a whole slew of us going down.

Both glad and nervous that head kicks are opened up in my division. It's a good thing because I'm tall and extremely flexible, but slow. And the competition in NYC can get a bit fierce. Hopefully no one is out for blood. Just three days!

I'd be so lost without head kicks! I've never been in a division where they were allowed... and lost 1st place in my recent tournament because back of the head was not a legal target for kicks.

Good luck and we look forward to pictures!

I hope I can get better pics (or video) this time around!!! Hopefully there will be enough people there that someone will record on their phone.

Turns out this is turning into a big deal, and our grand master is even going to come down. I have this feeling I'll be eating korean food for dinner afterwards.

I've only had bibimbap a few times - but I like it. :)

My fav is daeji boolgogi - the hotter the better, with a side of sour kimchi

Well yeah, NYC is one of the only places with real white castles! I grew up in NYC so it is like "home" to get sick off little square burgers

NYC has some of the best and most varied ethnic foods on the planet. That's probably the biggest aspect I miss too. Every time I go down there for recreation it turns into a food tour.

I only had one match. The wait was ridiculously long they were FOUR hours behind schedule. I sparred against another red belt who was 2" taller and 10 years younger, but we spent so much time waiting that we became friends.

First round was very close, 10-8 his favor, second round I lost at 22-17

My classmates and instructor said I fought very well, and they all had an issue with how the judges were scoring. The only real criticism I got is that if I didn't run out of endurance, I'd have won. They all complimented my skill fighting in a way that they don't normally, and they made me feel good. After the match I gave him a bro hug and we promised to see eachother again next year.

So once again, I may have lost the points, but I won the day, made a new friend, and fought well. I beat all of the people who didn't have the spirit to come participate.

Congratulations on a great match, against a taller and younger opponent, that's a fair account!

It sounds like you had a good time.. and had some great camaraderie and great competition, which are the best reasons to be at the tournament IMO.... and the added benefit of the training pressure of getting ready.

I know what you mean on endurance.. That is always the kicker for me too. In my last tournament, my first opponent was much harder than my 2nd, but I just didn't have enough endurance to keep up the pace to win the second match.

People who don't spar or fight don't realize the incredible amount of energy it takes. Boxers who go 12 rounds are incredible. Sparring will wipe out your full day's energy in 2 minutes when the adrenaline is pumping.
