Supposedly black belts from another dojang are coming to sparring class tonight.

I always find it difficult to spar against new people. You grow to know your class mates and their style. I guess that's exactly why it is necessary

It just feels like I'm going to be jumped karate kid style :D

But yes, this is very good for me in the long run. I need to spar people who are better than me, or I can't improve.

I think this is my cue to introduce Fighting Fit's inaugural round of Fortunately, Unfortunately!

Fortunately, some black belts you've not met are coming to spice up tonight's sparring class.

Unfortunately, two of them are a foot shorter than you, and the last takes you aside to ask you to take it slow, as this is his first sparring session after being cleared to train by the doctor.

More seriously, how did it go?

I don't know yet, class isn't for another couple of hours. Should be fun though. They're all 10 years younger than me and all 6' tall or more. One of them has a reputation for kicking very hard and not having good control. :O

Since our school is so big, we have whole groups of people I haven't met or sparred yet. Tonight will be me: Red belt, 37 yrs old. Vs a bunch of 25 yr old 1st and 2nd dans.

Don't worry, I'm sure they'll go easy on the old guy, unless you get on their nerves. ;)

    Good times!

I always believe that the best way to get better at sparring is to spar people who are better than me!

    Same.

In fact, that was my favourite part of black belt testing.

I find sparring is my least favourite part of karate. That said, I have had some really good sessions with strangers I spared with. Leave the ego at the door - the rest is easy

It was a fun night. I hope they show up more often. Often times I forget how much bigger (broader and taller) I am than a lot of guys, and how much of a difference it can make.

Awesome! That is what we do this for! I hope you get to interact with them more often

We often have visitors to our club and I love seeing the various different people and how their jiu jitsu differs to ours. Our coach is one of the top mma coaches/fighters in the country so we get a lot of the mma pro's coming to visit if they are in town or specifically do a week's training with him.
