When couples take on a diet together many have noticed that the male partner will lose weight faster than the female partner. This can be completely frustrating when eating the same diet and doing the same exercise while one sees better results than the other. So, is weight loss slower for women? But why is this?
Is it true?
Men do lose weight faster than women, at least initially. When a man drastically changes his eating and exercise habits for the better they tend to see more drastic result much earlier than women do. It has been tested whether if a man and a women cut the same amount of calories the man will lose weight faster. Men do, at least at first.
Why is this?
Lean Muscle Percentage
It is believed that men lose weight faster due to the fact that their bodies tend to have more lean muscle tissue present than in women’s bodies. They tend to drop bodyweight and fat at a faster rate than women even in control groups. Lean muscle burns more calories and fat even after exercise, while at rest. Logically, because the man has more of these cells present they will be more of these cells working to burn more fat.
Lower Percentage of Body Fat
From puberty women tend to carry six to eleven percent more body fat than men. This is likely due to the fact that women may need it when they fall pregnant to carry a healthy baby to term. These fat storages serve an evolutionary purpose which is why they are difficult to get rid of even if the women is eating the same amount of calories as a man on the same healthy weight loss plan.
Body Shape
Men who are overweight tend to carry fat around their abdomen, giving the appearance of a large belly. Women distribute fat more evenly around the abdomen, hips, thighs, bust and bum. This means that when a woman, for example, loses 10 kgs it will be less noticeable on her because the fat has been reduced everywhere whereas a man’s belly will disappear. This makes men’s faster weight loss more noticeable than women’s even if it is significantly less.
Carrying weight around your middle is linked to heart risks. A plus-sized woman may be heavier and larger than a man but at a reduced risk of heart disease due to the even distribution of fat. It is healthier to carry weight in your thighs and bum than your belly.
There are weight loss programs for women which are geared to help you reach a healthy goal weight and maintain it. This is more desirable than losing lots of weight only to pick it up again. Weight loss for women may be a steeper hill to climb, but with the help of the right healthy weight loss plan you will reach your goals. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.
