What do you do when dining out while counting calories?

  • Saturday, we ended up at Bob Evans and I just had a glass of water. I don’t trust they know how to make food without bacon in it.

I only dine out now if I want a "cheat meal." Otherwise it's not worth it to me to pay the money for a meal I probably had to ask them to adjust and which may or may not be good. I live in an area though with very few restaurant options.

I just do the best estimate I can and usually assume 1k calories. I generally opt for vegan-friendly indian food or jinya, but that's mostly because I really like spicy food.

I am just trying to avoid dinning out for now. Always leads to wine & bad food choices. We do have a many great vegan restaurants near us. I plan to go out after I lose 20 pounds.

We live in a small coastal town. Some places look at me like I am insane when I even ask for a garden burger! Drives me crazy when I hear people say "just talk to the chef, they love challenges" - heck, we don't have chefs we have line cooks that only cook what is on the menu. Sometimes I try to get just a baked potato & salsa, sometimes pasta w/ marinara sauce. My dh loves to eat out so it is tough. I try to plan ahead with what I eat that day so if I fall apart it isn't so distasterous. I also try to go to ethnic restaurants since the chance of finding vegan meals is higher there.
