Hi
I have been struggling to lose weight for years. I have 4 1/2 stones to lose and wondered what works for other members and how to get the most out of the app.
I live in the lake district, and have been going to slimming world for 9 months, with limited success.

    calorie deficit... simple as that.

eat food you like, in portion sizes that fit your calorie goal.

    eat some fruit and veg.

    find an exercise you enjoy.

pre log your day so you hit your goal, and check out the weekly goal, not just daily.

I went to Slimming World for a lot of years. I did lose weight on the program, but the scale completely stopped moving for me after about 4-4.5 stone. My personal opinion is that SW is good if you have a bad diet to start with and don't have a massive appetite. If one is a big eater then it's easy to eat a lot of food that's allowed on the plan, is technically healthy, but shoots you way over the amount of calories you're meant to be eating in a day.

everyone i know who did Slimming World lost weight, then put it back on again when they stopped going. (please bear in mind I don't know everyone who's done slimming world hahahaha)

I think if you do a restrictive plan you do exactly what you said, lose motivation. If you moderate your own eating through logging what you have, making a few small changes to enjoyable healthier options, then you have a sustainable and healthy approach to eating for life.

    Good luck!

We all have the same issues, lose weight, go back to old habits, end up heavier than we started. I feel we need to do this as a group not only on MFP, you need help from those around you. As Mae West said "I can resist everything bar temptation", if those around you are eating cake- "One slice won't hurt". One slice doesn't but it never stops there.

It almost takes a complete change of pattern in your lifestyle. If you work go for a lunchtime walk that doesn't go past food outlets, walk all or part way to work. If you don't work find a reason to go out of the house, walk to a charity shop for a browse. Just change it up so it is more difficult to slip into old habits.

Also keep talking on here, be prepared that comments sometimes feel like criticism as they are only text and you can't see the intonation. Nobody here is out to undermine you so anything said is only to be constructive.

I have been struggling to lose weight for years.
I stayed overweight for 20 years.

wondered what works for other members
First step was taking responsibility for the quantity of food I stuffed in my cake hole and accepting that every mouthful is a choice. For years I blamed the idiot car driver that rearranged my knee and put me on crutches for months for my weight gain (partially true). But he didn't make me eat more than I needed for the next 20 years!
Second step was really thinking about how I could make the process personally sustainable and as least unpleasant as possible. (For me that was 5:2 eating plan but that's very much the personal part.)

and how to get the most out of the app.
Log your food completely and consistently, set a sustainable deficit, monitor long term trends and adjust your calorie goal if necessary. Don't worry so much about the speed of loss as time works in your favour as long as you have any kind of deficit.

Lovely part of the world to walk in.
Slimming clubs wouldn't be my thing but getting my wife onboard helped create an environment where calorie restriction for a period was easier.
