Considering going off the pump.....has anyone else?

Options
I've been type 1 since 1993 and using the pump since 2003. I've been having a lot of trouble with my sites kinking (especially in the middle of the night...aka ketones in the morning...gross) and my A1c's have been running high lately because of it. I'm thinking of taking a trial break from the pump for 3 months (enough time to get an A1c reading).

Has anyone gone from the pump back to injections? How has it worked for you? I'm kind of nervous and would love to hear your stories!

I'll give you my right arm before I give you my pump!!!

As for the kinking sites. Have you contacted the company about this. It's really weird that it would be happening now and not before.

Yes, I have been on injections, then went on a pump then back to injections. Have been back on injections for about 7 years now. I'm in New Zealand so things are a little different here. Anyway when I went back on injections I was put on Lantus and Novorapid and for the most part, have had no issues. Though with Lantus, I have had to split my doses so instead of doing it daily I do twice daily and inject novorapid according to carb intake. I went off the pump because of the costs involved and also I too was having issues with DKA but that was more related to an eating disorder I had at the time and my body not being able to cope with just short acting insulin on board. Now, I am having issues with hypo unawareness so that my now specialist wants me to go back on a pump. I am extremely sensitive to insulin and so I have issues with fine tuning my control. I also no longer suffer from the eating disorder, well most days I am good.

I have found it fine reverting back to several injections a day, I have a minimum of 5 a day but I do find it difficult in that I have to be very strict whenever exercising in that I have to do it first thing in the morning before I have any short acting insulin or any food as I have just found it too difficult to exercise any other time of the day as more than likely I will go really hypo if I have any short acting insulin on board.

Something to think about before going back on is you definitely won't have the flexibility that you do with being on a pump BUT you also don't have the issues of kinking lines/sites and the resulting DKA that can happen so quickly when on a pump.

Did you recently lose weight or switch insertion sets/devices??

When I first started on my pump (Medtronic) i was using the quick-set infusion set with the round blue insertion device and it was hitting muscle in my abdomen. I switched to the Mio which I believe has a shorter cannula and I love it, haven't had a problem since the switch :) Perhaps you may want to explore other insertion set/cannulas...

I went off of the pump two years ago and couldn't be happier. I have a Dexcom CGM which really helps me to adjust things. My A1C has stayed about the same.
