When you first started?

Hi everyone, My name is Melanie. Been on Mfp for a month now. Been reading all your posts but was to shy to post. Till now. I started at my highest weight ever at 377. I lost 19lbs on my own than found Mfp. As of Tuesday I lost 30 lbs. No one has noticed any changes or made any comments. Which makes me feel very sad that I am so fat its gonna take a miracle to see a difference. Feel discouraged down right depressed. How did you guys handle the first steps of your journey?

    Hi Melanie!! I’m Melanie too!!!

    The first few weeks and months are always the hardest. I started at 471 pounds and I had to drop about 75 lbs before people really started noticing. Incidentally, that’s also when I dropped down a clothing size. The best advice I can give is to tell yourself that if you stick to it, it will work and slowly but surely those pounds will fall off. Eventually, everyone will notice! 30 lbs is a HUGE step towards your goal. Next time you go to the grocery store pick up a 30 lb back of dog food... that’s A LOT!

    I’m so glad you found us here. It’s a great group filled with great people who understand what this journey is like.

    Typed alot after that but it vanished...lol. Wanted to thank you for replying. I was so nervous about what I posted. Appreciate the kind words. It's hard for me because my hubby can eat anything and everything with no weight gain. (sucks for me..lol) Just looking for support from people who truly understand my struggle.     i have logged in 20 days now At last weigh in I weighed 468 , did weight 477 so ya see No one has noticed anything lol but I have noticed , I am walking better , so that is good . Welcome to our group and little by little we will get there. I am really bummed because my knee is really hurting so that makes it harder to walk, but I seem like I have the energy to walk , which is amazing . My kids and my husband all are at normal weighs so they eat pizza , they eat cake LOL I can't . But right now All I care about is blood sugars being so good , everyday they are so normal . (diabetic ). so add me is ya want :smiley:

    Hi Tammy, thank you for replying. Well i am 44 yrs old and had to walk with a walker as I have osteoarthritis. From working so much and not using knee pads my knees are bone on bone. My husband says when I walk sounds like twigs breaking( feels like it to sometimes). Since last week I have been able to walk short distance without it. Trying to find exercises I can do that won't aggravate my knees. Right now I do chair workouts. It's awesome that your sugars are good, and thank you for being so kind. Hard to find people who understand.

    Last year I went through some pretty serious health issues and required major surgery to fix it. It was a long journey and not a pleasant one. While I recovered from surgery, my friend mentioned in passing about going to aquafit, like water aerobics. I love swimming so it was not a huge deal for me to go. I did weigh over 330lbs though. She went with me once and I have been going three to four times a week every since. It is low impact and it is all resistance. It shouldn’t bother your knees at all. I started losing inches and felt great right away. The scale has started to move now and I have lost almost 20 lbs since January 1. Don’t worry about other people noticing...that will come too. Since I started swimming, I have gained so much strength that I now want to go out for walks and I have added other workout routines to my week. I still have a lot to go, but I feel great. Maybe swimming is a good place to start??? Just a suggestion! Welcome to the group!

    Outside my main motivation of getting to a healthy weight and being able to live a normal healthy life, there were two things that kept me on course when I was starting out. One was that I had promised my parents that I would come home for the holidays. At my highest weight, that was not an easy task and I wanted to keep my promise. The other thing has simply been the numbers themselves. I have a spreadsheet where I keep a log of my daily weight, and I break it down by day, week, month and have a chart I like to look over. It's beyond nerdy, but the continual downward trend does help motivate me. I practically argue with my scale on mornings where my weight will be red (meaning I gained) before I resign and log the gain. I understand the trade offs weighing daily and for me it works.

    I guess my advice would be to pick a goal that's meaningful to you beyond someone noticing. For me I really wanted to rent a car and fit in that rental car to travel home (I was mostly successful; I ended up with a car I could just barely squeeze into lol). Beyond that, the weight coming off and your ability to do more and more things will be one of the biggest motivators. For me, just being able to do normal things is huge. I went to the movies last weekend. That's something I couldn't have done five months ago because it would have been too difficult simply to walk through the theater and I expect I definitely wouldn't have fit in the seats.

    Keep at it. You did the hard part. You started.

    @JJKM02 've heard all kinds of good things about water aerobics and pool exercises - really makes me wish there was a indoor pool near me :(

    @bigghunny Like @Mellykay88 says, when you're first getting started, it's going to take a while to really start seeing the results, especially if you are like me and built solidly and also have some body image issues anyway.... But you ARE progressing! Doctors are nowadays encouraging their patients to try to loose even just 5% of their weight for health benefits to start showing, and you're well past that and nearly to the 10% goal.

    I know all about getting discouraged, though - I'm in a slump lately and have been struggling with weight water gain and no real loss for a couple of weeks now. It's so frustrating, and that's the time when the part of me that I have to fight with to stick with my diet plan starts claiming to feeling deprived and whispering "come on, 1 won't hurt" and the will power gets really weak. so that's why I need this group and other folks who understand cheering me on, even when I get really whiny and probably drive folks crazy with my posts lol

    It's funny, I actually have the opposite problem.

    This stint on MFP is the 3rd time in my life that I have *seriously* tried to lose weight. On no occasion have I admitted to anyone in my real life that I'm trying to lose weight, except my husband. The first 2 times (once with SlimFast, once with Slimming World), I got to about 25lb lost both times when my mum asked if I'd lost weight. I admitted that I had, and how and how much. I then didn't consciously change anything, didn't think I lost any dedication.....but my weight loss stalled, so something must have gone off track. And after prolonged plateaus my weight started creeping up again (and to higher than it had been before!)

    This time, using CICO on MFP only, I started at my highest ever of 364lb and made it to 42lb lost before someone noticed - and that was a friend when we met for coffee in early December.

    And the same thing has happened!

    This time, I can clearly identify where and how I have gone off track. Christmas certainly didn't help with that, and surgery in the new year, and an injury, and a new job.....but all those excuses aside, I have really struggled to be on track ever since I admitted to someone else that I have lost weight.

    Every. Single. Time.

    I'd love to thrash that one out with a therapist.

    *laughs* Oh I know that feeling! When I take a step back and really look at my quirks and mental state, I think to myself that a psychologist would have a field day with me!

    Thank you everyone for your replies and kind words. Today is a new day need to get up and just do it. I wish there was a pool near me that was affordable. Bmeadows love your posts. I'm already driving my therapist crazy with this journey..lol

    I think everyone loses weight in different places so don't let anyone not noticing get to you! Sometimes its just loosing a bit from lots of places or loosing a lot from one place. I think setting small goals is helpful as it gives you something to work towards. I get super stressed at the bigger number loss but when I think about each pound or each 10 pounds, that's a little less scary and overwhelming. My dog Barkley weighs 17 pounds so each time I lose 17 pounds, I like to think I lost a Barkley, onto the next one.
  • @bigghunny hello and welcome! Great to see you post. This is such a lovely group with some really fab people who are in the journey together. I love our little group!

    I started at 325lbs the second week of January after hearing some 'friends' being really awful about me and my weight. As a family we’ve had a really tough 18 months so it sent me into a tailspin where I didn’t actually eat at all for about 2 weeks. My hubby has managed to set me straight again and now I’m having about 1400 calories a day and I’ve bought a treadmill so I can workout in the privacy of my own home without anyone watching or judging. I’m not ready for outdoor exercise yet but I’m already 35lbs down and I can now walk far further and faster than I have done for years. I also have a weak knee after I smashed it on a gate post horse riding in 2012. It’s been partially replaced but doesn’t work properly. So I’ve been doing about half an hour on the treadmill in the morning and then a bit more in the evening, but I only started at 2mph top speed with no incline. This morning I managed to do the first of the programmes the treadmill has in it, not as fast as it wanted me to but I did it! I’ve just taken it very slow and steady and stopped any time my knee felt a bit iffy. As some of the others have mentioned on other threads, Leslie Sansone does walking at home workout videos on YouTube, they’re pretty good. I’ve done them a couple of times, started with the 1 mile one and almost died the first time but I can do it now! Great to have you with us.

    When I started my journey the first time a few years ago I was on record at 489 but probably higher than that and knocking on deaths door. I decided I did not want to live like that. I am getting close to 200 pounds gone(thanks to mfp, hasfit.com and hip hop abs) but I have a ways to go. Even as big as I was people still look at me now and wonder why I am SO big why haven't I lost the weight or more weight, & it was laziness on my part, but I am back at it and I am hoping my next weigh in I will be under 300 pounds which I have not been in 15 years. It gets easier everyday. I just make one change at a time and go from there, try to never get discouraged & always remember why you started your journey in the first place and focus on that.

    That part can be so frustrating, can't it? People give you this "look" about your weight, and you want to cry out "but I was heavier before! I'm making progress!

    A lot of people don't want to say anything about it evwn of they do see it because they don't want to embarass or hurt you. Ive lost 60 and people tell me all the time that they thought i was losing weight but didn't want to be rude in case it was the wrong thing to say. There is another thread about how to deal with unwanted noticing of your body, and i think there's a range of experiences with attention to our bodies by other people. Remember that you know that things ate changing and that your progress is a wonderful success! Chatter from outside sources is difficupt to predict, but we can control how much love and support we give ourselves...and each of our mfpeeps!
