Equipment At Home

Hi girls

Looking to set up properly for SL 5x5 at home. Does this look like all I will need?

The bar is not an Olympic bar, only 10kg instead of the 20kg 7ft bar but rack, bench and barbell with weights is all you need.

Find out what the max load on the bar is and make sure you are happy with it and also the max weight plate sizes to enable you to get the max out of the bar, but a nice set

    Hello

I work out at home - got a bench/squat thing with a pretty basic home bar off gumtree - the only problem I have is that my bar is now full (bought a few sets of 10kg plates to add along the way eeek happy bunny here)

Most important thing is to check what the max weight your bar will take is and can you buy more weight plates when needed?

I have a very light aluminum bar and started with 5kg (bar not counted as its nothing) for squats/deadlifts and 2.5kgs for ohp/bench/row

    Happy lifting x

If that's your budget, I would look for a power cage and Olympic weights. A quick eBay search turned up a bunch of power cages for $500 or under with free shipping, and Olympic weight sets are pretty easy to find on Craigslist and garage sales.

The only thing that worries me about that squat rack is that it doesn't have safety catches. As long as you never plan to fail a squat, that's not a problem.
  • I don't like that thing. I t just doesn't look completely practical for our purposes.

    Check these out:

    Squat rack:

Something like these things is what I would shop for if I were to invest in setting up a home gym.

Here, Rip explains how to shop for barbells in order to ensure longevity:

He also has a section in his book, SSBBT3 that explains how to set up a home gym. It may interest you if you wanna get completely geeked out on this stuff.

    Good luck!

OMG - I've been doing exactly the same thing this afternoon. I was on the same site too!

You haven't put a link in your last post though. I'm hoping your research saves me from having to do it myself!!

Remember, we're in Australia, guys, so Amazon is no good for us! (can you imagine the postage costs!!!)

    I just found this: http://www.crazysales.com.au/home-power-rack-cage.html

With postage, that's $500 to my place. Then add $$$ for bench, barbell and weights.... That's a lot of $10 visits to the gym (but so convenient!)

    Or there's this: http://www.crazysales.com.au/home-power-rack-cage.html
Which you could possibly raise for squatting and lower for bench press. Add a bench, weights and barbell and you're good to go. Not so safe though...

From my personal experience of building up a home gym, I would suggest putting your money towards a nice Olympic bar. Weights are weights IMO, unless you're doing Olympic lifts, in which case you'll want to get some good bumper plates. I see you have Rogue in Australia - I would highly recommend them. My weight set is from them and the bar is guaranteed for life, bumpers for 2 years. Their stuff is quality and their customer service is incredible.

Power Racks are very nice to have but not a requirement. I have always used Squat Stands (due to limited space) and they work just fine, although obviously not as safe.

Good luck. It's always fun shopping, especially for weightlifting stuff. :)

If you're going to go that route, spend the extra $50 and get the Olympic bar and plates ...

That looks great. What do you mean by not safe? It's a power rack. It's sole purpose is for safe lifting. Those bars that go from front to back are spotter bars, that can be adjusted to just below the bottom of your ROM, to catch the barbell if you fail a lift.

It didn't make sense to me either! I must have found something else on that site and thought I copied the address but didnt. It was something more like the pic of somebody's garage in the August chat forum. Which I think is probably the best way to start. I don't need a cage - I sure can't lift heavy yet and the price is a turn-off.

just from an outsiders perspective, I think the quote was she has a squat stand which 'isn't as safe' as a power rack :)
