Hair lice are one of the most common conditions during one's childhood. They can cause severe itching and when things get out of hand, they can be so bothersome that you will lose concentration in whatever it is you are doing.
But hair lice do not fly nor do they jump from one's head to yours. They only crawl and the only way you can get this is to have contact with someone who has them, maybe through sharing a brush or through sleeping with your heads close together. Hair lice are pretty common for children simply because they're the ones who are touchy with their hair. Moreover, no one is safe from this even if you have clean hair. All you need to get this condition is by having direct contact with someone who has hair lice.
So how do you treat hair lice? It's a good thing that you don't have to worry much about them because there are several treatments for lice and you can use more than one. However, do not go overboard as it may damage your hair and your scalp in the long run.
1. Apply over-the-counter products
There are many over-the-counter (OTC) products that you can use such as shampoo or cream. Some of them are made purposely to kill hair lice. This is primarily because the main ingredient in them is called pyrethrum (which you can get from chrysanthemum flowers) that targets the nervous system of living lice which causes them to die. OTC products are easy to use since they are very similar to shampoos and conditioners. However, you have to let them stay on your hair for around 10 minutes so they can actually kill the living lice. Take note, though, that they only kill live lice. Another treatment is used to kill nits (eggs).
2. Use a hair lice removal comb
This particular comb was made to remove hair lice and their nits. It helps you remove those that were not killed during your shampoo application and the dead lice that did not fall off when you rinsed your hair. It's best to apply this even if it is somewhat tedious because researchers and doctors have noticed that some lice are able to adapt and outlast some OTC products.
3. Blow dry your hair
Another way of killing nits is to use a hairdryer. Yes, it's old-fashioned, but it is very effective when you want to kill the eggs. However, it's not as effective in killing adult lice. This is also perfect since if you regularly use a hairdryer, more nits will die every single day and they won't even grow on your scalp anymore.
4. Put olive oil
This technique is a natural way to kill lice and you can do it for as many times as you want. Simply put a good amount of olive oil on your hair and your scalp then cover it with a shower cap. Leave it overnight and then comb your hair the next day. Olive oil is said to help loosen the hold of the lice and nits making it easier for you to remove them.
