I signed up way back in January, and now it's almost D-day. This is my FIRST ever Spartan, and it's a Super. Absolutely crazy, but I'm gonna give it a shot anyway.

Any thoughts, suggestions, advice, or words of encouragement?

Good luck and have a great time !!

I have no advice from personal experience for you - the closest I have gotten to a Spartan event is hearing some friends talking about their Spartan races, and even just that caused me to experience phantom joint pain.

But I am hoping to do my first next year (just a Sprint to start with, not a Super as I am not as much of a lunatic as you seem to be), so I would be super-interested in hearing about your experience as a first-timer if you are inclined to provide a post afterwards.

One of my buddies suggested that when you encounter the gentlemen (that term is used loosely and ironically) who are swinging a padded stick at your head, consider calling them "sissies" - it might just confuse them enough to enable you to scoot on past. Although to be frank, this buddy is rarely the source of good suggestions, so your call.

Congrats on signing up for your first Spartan!! My first was also a Super. My recommendation is to carry a hydration pack and bring some sort of energy source. I don't know what fitness level you are but gels, chews, or even a Power Bar can go a long way when you're 5 miles in and still have 3 to go.

Other than that, avoid wearing cotton and you'll be fine! Just bring a good attitude and you'll have a blast. You'll likely make some new friends out on the course, too.
