sugar or fat

I shared this in the food and nutrition board, but I will post it here too to get the perspective of those of you that are also pregnant. Anyone else dealing with this?

I find myself having to constantly make decisions during the day based on what I'm more afraid of of; sugar or fat. I want to have a snack, but fruit has too much sugar in it, but peanut butter is high in fat. I'm at the point where I don't know where to put my focus. I always go over on sugar based on the fact that I eat so much produce, but I never go ever on fat. I have this horrible fear of developing gestational diabetes and then having it not go away after pregnancy (diabetes runs in my family.) It's kinda of starting to drive my husband nuts how neurotic I've become about my diet, do I need to be? Or am I totally justified?

I would suggest researching GD diets and information. It might help you look at your choices differently. As well as give you better options. There are much healthy nut butter options that peanut butter that taste amazing. Healthy fat isn't bad for you in moderation, and the same for healthy (naturally occurring sugars). For the sugar part, you can always pair it with a lean protein which will change the overall effect your snack has on your blood sugar levels..... again, research GD. It should help.

I personally do not worry about sugar at all and quit tracking it because I ALWAYS went over. I eat very little processed foods or sugar, so it is all from fruit. I don't worry much about the sugar from fruit. I also have the same philosphy on fat. Fat from healthy sources I do not worry about and I even feel more satisfied on days I go over 25% fat for the day. Of course, that is in nuts, avacado and healthy oils like coconut. I think healthy fats are especially important in pregnancy, so I pretty much eat them freely.

Basically, fat and sugar are bad if your sources are cake and lard. Otherwise, I say enjoy!!

Fat is really important for the baby's brain development, but I had lost the 41 lbs in my ticker eating double or triple the recommended amounts of fat anyway. If it's in a healthy food, it's healthy fat, and you should eat it :)

If you are really worried about gestational diabetes then have your blood sugar tested. Otherwise, don't worry about it. BTW diabetes is a big thing in my family, too, but none of the women have ever had GD, and all but one of the diabetics in my family can point to their weight as the reason they had to take meds/insulin.

For what it's worth, I read that women who get their extra calories from fat sources tend to lose it easier after birth.

I took sugar off my macro page, as I was always over and it was mostly from "good stuff" as opposed to cookies and ketchup!

I wouldnt worry about fat and just try to eat less concentrated sugar. I'm sure you know how beneficial fat is for brain development and it's role in the antiinflammatory process for yourself and the baby. Walnuts, canola oil, avocados, egg yolks, dairy fat.
