Dear UAC Team Members,
All too often, a weight loss goal, motivates you to drastically cut calories to get that darn scale to start moving down. Yesterday, one of our team mates asked this question, "lately I’ve felt very hungry and physically off — wondering if I’m cutting to far under my calorie goal each day. It’s making the scale move but just feeling a little off. Anyone ever get sluggish like that? MFP hasn’t said I’m too far under calorie intake yet but the tummy is almost always grumbly."
I get worried about each of you when your caloric intake is just not enough to keep you feeling healthy.
Even though, the article I recommend you read is written from a Paleo perspective, there is plenty of nutritional truth and wisdom in this read https://chriskresser.com/are-you-an-under-eater-8-signs-youre-not-eating-enough/8 -
See post above....Hangry?

By the way thanks @RangerRickL for yesterday's article. Just had the chance to read it this morning. I really value UAC's posts and these kinds of discussions. its so helpful when we get to observe perspectives from folks who have had success at maintainence.5

July 9th and 10th Yes 3xs.
I think for hunger's sake that quality of food matters. I like to fill up on healthy fats and proteins to keep the hunger away. This helps me immensely and keeps me on track.7 -
Thanks for the article, again @RangerRickL.
This month I've made a conscious decision to push myself hard to lose, but am hyper aware I still need to make sure I eat enough to be healthy. I feel myself getting hangry and sleeping less well sometimes and know they are my triggers to have a higher cal day. This will be tomorrow for me, I'm not going to go over my calories but I'm going to eat back my exercise cals fir the day.
In August I'm going to be travelling and on holiday so will be mainly off plan and unfocused, but from Sept I'm determined to join the slow and steady loss with more calories a day coming from nutritious food.
For today, it is three yeses.7 -

Track: yes
Excerise : 30m cycling, 20m gym
Budget: under
Today the calaries deficit is catching on me. I felt so weak and I couldn’t finish my 45m bike workout. I used to want to have it all, weight lost and performance at the same time. But this time I am going to just favour weight lost more than performance. I’ll rather have a lower intensity workout but keep the calaries under since I am on track with the diet now. Will see how it goes. Once I am closer to my ideal weight goal, I’ll start focusing on the performance / training, then I will need to take more carbs to fuel the higher intensity workout, also I’ll work on maintaining weight.7 -
I found that, once I started focusing on nutritional food rather than the pure gratification of eating empty foods, the hangry feeling wasn't as prevalent. It was much easier to lose weight when I had lots to lose, but as it dropped, it got more difficult, and I found that I had to mix it up, so to speak, to keep from plateauing. Everyone is different and needs to find what works for them. I'm less focused on the weight-loss now, and as I am concentrating on muscle toning and stamina, I expect my weight to fluctuate. As long as the general trend is downwards, I'm happy, and when/if I reach goal, I will embrace maintenance.

@RangerRickL, thanks for sharing both articles! I read another interesting article a month or two ago about the idea of willpower and how those who supposedly "use it most" are actually those who use it least because they're better at avoiding "situations of temptation". It's nice to have other perspectives and get rid of a lot of the negative self-talk surrounding weight loss. I'd never seen such a comprehensive list of possible under-eating symptoms, and I have experienced some of them occasionally, so it definitely gives me something to keep in mind. I actually upped my calories post-vacation from what they had been pre-vacation. Figuring out the last ~10 pounds and getting into maintenance is definitely an adventure for me.7 -

I try to stay under my goals a little bit when I first plan out a day. If I’m high activity or hunger I’ll add in extra calories from whatever category I feel I’m too low in, or to satisfy a craving. Sometimes I’m very hungry on highly active days and I’ll eat a few of the calories MFP says I earned. Those days I go for the foods I find filling, usually nuts. If I don’t need them then yay I’m a little more under. I figure that in the end it all evens out and it’s better than feeling rundown or hungry.6 -
Yes x 3 today. Two horses and then an hour in the pool, which felt really good on this hot humid day.6

Aw, thanks so much for the article, very helpful! I always joke that I come from tough Norwegian (Viking) stock so we slowly pack on the pounds and the beau says I’m a furnace at night.... it’s probably not true but I am a Northern European mutt. 😂 I wonder how much those genes have to do with things. When I fall off the wagon it’s hard and I can’t even begin to think what my daily calorie intake is, but the pounds only slowly creep up. I definitely think my current setting is too low of a daily calorie level and will readjust at the end of this month! Or sooner if MFP starts to balk 😏. Thanks again for posting the article, I appreciate it immensely!6 -

@RangerRickL -- That is so true. That is actually one of the reasons I left Weight Watchers and sought out a nutritionist because I found I was exercising so much I wasn't getting enough "points" to eat. And honestly Weight Watchers doesn't do a very good job of teaching you how to eat when you're workout out a ton. Because of that I actually started putting on weight because my body was in starvation mode. Once I switched to MFP and have a bit more freedom to eat more calories on days I run long and am very active, it's made a big difference and I was able to start losing again. While it may seem counterproductive, eating more can sometimes let you lose more!7 -
As far as too little calories go I had an issue about 2 months in. I wasn't hungry but was feeling off and more tired. My husband told me I was eating too little but I said that wasn't it and assumed I was going into a flare ( I have fibro). A couple of days later I realized he was right. I was eating about 800 -1000 less than my calories given with exercise. Now I make an effort to eat till I am 300-500 below, even if that means I have a latte instead of food (if I'm not hungry).4

I was on target until the very end of the evening.
Your trigger question posed the other day has really helped me do some focusing. Which is really helpful right now. Feeling overwhelmed with too many things going on, leads to lack of planning, leads to easy foods...….that are not good...…….anyways, you get the picture.
this week I have been putting more thought in to planning ahead......even if it's only a couple of hours before meal time...…...I have a long ways to go though, like always.
Today, preparing for grandkids and the inlaws to stay at our house. Making my meal list now8 -

Thanks for the article and comments today. I think part of the problem with my weight loss recently has been too few calories. Sounds ridiculous, but based on what many of you are saying, I'm assuming it must be true. I've been exercising a lot more than I have in the past (honestly - not at all) so perhaps my body is in starvation mode and storing calories instead of burning them. At least it's something new to try!6
