Don't worry, y'all, the Q's here!

Hi! I'm Kat, queer femme from Long Beach, CA! I've struggled with my weight most of my life, and I'm now at the heaviest I've ever been (well, I was last week when I started this journey anyway). The issue? All my queer friends want to do is eat and drink (I'm also fairly newly sober, so my fellow sober friends what's up!). Tips for fun activities that don't involve either and/or ways to navigate those food-heavy situations as I tend to treat them as impromptu cheat days?

  • I struggle with this too! What I've been trying lately is getting my friends to cook at someone's house instead of going out. I feel a lot less pressure to eat/drink when in the comfort of a house/apt and not a bar/restaurant. I also pitch it to them as saving money and that works better for some of them.. I've also been trying to get my friends to do some sort of physical activity before/after going out. Some things we've done: walking, rock climbing, playing at the park, TopGolf, bowling, dancing, etc. I think that's helped to not just be sitting and eating all the time.

I usually plan to be moderate and pre-log so that I do have a plan before going out...like having only one beer/drink at a happy hour instead of more than one...or I will have diet soda at happy hour which is something I don't drink often so for me it's still a special occasion treat...same for food, if I'm going to eat, then I just get an appetizer, and I try to make it something shareable so I'm not even eating the whole appetizer myself. I will plan a snack before going out, something that meets my food goals, so that I'm not hungry or tempted to eat more during the event.

I also have gotten a few friends into Pokemon Go, so walking and playing that after happy hour has started to catch on with a few folks, but I was doing it even before anyone joined me, assuming you are in an area where walking alone is safe.
