It is good to get your Basal metabolic rate at the beginning of your journey. Here is an article Go online and look up a BMR calculator
BMR is your Basal Metabolic Rate (or how many calories your body needs just to function). Here is a good article about the topic:

Once you get that number you’re going to want to get yourself into a caloric deficit (eating less calories than your BMR) to lose weight, or a caloric surplus if your goal is to gain weight.
