Mrs_Hoffer wrote: »@KCJen I've used the recipe tracker in MFP before. It worked well for me. I used it for a Red Velvet Cheesecake recipe that my bestie was making for me for my birthday a few years ago. We put everything into MFP (total ingredients) and then how many servings WE were going to cut the cheesecake into. It ended up being like 1200-some calories per slice! It was an eye opener!
^^ Ditto. The built-in recipe tracker is easier to use than it looks. I also like the ability to adjust serving sizes (even once the recipe is logged since you can have, like "0.25 of a serving")dsgoingtodoit wrote: »matltedtea, gina and suziq - Thanks for those prayers ladies! I am waiting for more test results - get them back late afternoon on Monday. Testing for something scary...but ruled out a couple of others. So...I sincerely appreciate the prayers.
kk! You're still on my mind!2 -
Homemade meals:
These can be entered in the recipe section. Click onto <More> and choose recipes. I have most of my meals recorded. Just be careful of portion control.
You can do either batched cooked recipes or single servings.
If you have a recipe recorded you just need to enter the name and MFP does the rest.2 -
@dsgoingtodoit I will keep them coming!1

Thanks everyone! and you're in my prayers @dsgoingtodoit1

Oooh, I can import recipes from Better Homes and Gardens website into MFP recipe section. I will definitely learn how to use this over the next couple of days. I love BH&G!! I have 11 Better Homes and Gardens cookbooks. Love the big Red Plaid
This is a favorite for my son and I and I just added https://www.bhg.com/recipe/beef/spicy-beef-noodle-bowl/ Adding it was very easy, and I think I can go in and adjust calories and brands. This is so exciting!!2 -

Thanks @TerriRichardson112 Terri, I don't know if I have ever told you, but you have always been very helpful to me in the UAC. I am glad you are a part of this group!1 -

Oh this brings back memories! My mother had that cookbook and LOVED it! She used it so much it was falling apart! She passed in 2017 and tragically, 3 months after her death her house burned down...... so I was unable to get my hands on that cookbook! But thanks @KCJen for the memories!!1 -

@Mrs_Hoffer I am so sorry to hear that about your Mom.
My mom has a 1953 Red Plaid that I just adore looking thru. It has pages stuck together and brings back memories for me as well. This past Christmas I bought her the latest edition of Better Homes & Gardens cookbook, along with the Cooking for Two cookbook from America's Test Kitchen (to help with just cooking for her and Dad). I love Better Homes and Gardens, it all started with my Granny using BH&G, then my Mom, and now me. And I use it to teach my son how to cook as well3 -
MFP Recipe Maker Question:
I have imported 2 recipes into the recipe maker, but I was trying to figure out how to make my own recipe. I don't see where I can enter my own foods I have listed for tracking. (It does match to MFP general food database, but I would like to match to the foods I have added personally) I also don't see where I can edit the matched foods the recipe maker automatically matched. Can it be edited? I just found the manually enter recipes, so that might be my option if the imported recipes can't be edited and calories adjusted.
Update: Sometimes in life, you have to ask the question so you can find the answer! I did more research after posting this question and found my answer. MFP will not let me use my saved foods in the recipes, but I can search the MFP database which will pull my "saved foods" as well. Also learned that if I use the app to create the recipes, I can use the barcode scanner. Not sure how that works tho. I will learn as I go4 -
I wanted to share two articles I found that were helpful to me for the recipe section in MFP:

FWIW, I ONLY use the manual function to add my recipes even if I'm using a recipe I found online or from a cookbook.
Why? I'm forever subbing ingredients 🤷🏿♀️
And, yes, you can search the MFP database in order to get the right match for your foods... including editing the quantities. Glad you figured it out.

If you are putting in your own recipes, one tip I heard (and use for my home-made bread) is to
- list the ingredients
- weight the cooking pot (if something like a stew or other multi-ingredient dish) or serving plate (if something like a cake that will be removed from the pan before finishing )
- make a note of the weight.
- do the assembly / cooking / finishing
- weigh the whole shebang (minus the weight of the pot or plate)
- put "number of servings" as "smallest weight-unit" (eg i weigh in grams but maybe you weigh in oz) So my bread recipe makes something in the range of "450 servings"
- from now on when you serve it, you put your dinner plate on the scale, Zero it, put the serving on, and whatever the weight is, that's your "number of servings". SO a self-sliced piece of home-made bread might be anywhere from 34 to 59 to 90 (two slices with a hamburger between) and I know the calories will be right and the relative proportions of all macros are right.
Anyone who doesn't already have a food-scale, they are your BEST FRIEND and can be ordered inexpensively from Amazon, or Walmart, or any place that has a "Kitchenware" section.
I was measuring and honestly recording my popping corn according to the package label (by volume 1/2 cup) and eating it plain .... I got a food scale and weighed 1/2 cup ... close to double the "serving size by weight".
My slow weight-loss trend sped up somewhat starting the next day just from that one change to better accuracy on my default evening snack-size.5 -
@MaltedTea Thanks! I think I will be manually entering everything myself as well.
@BMcC9 Thanks for the number of servings. I have not heard of that. Might have to try that after I get back into the habit of tracking and weighing everything. Baby steps for me. One step at a time4 -
I gave myself a "BMI TRUE-Reality Check, and admitted to the Wii Profile setting that I should be 5 ft 2 in (not 5 ft 3 as I was when I first started keeping track)
So now the border between Normal and Overweight BMI (25) is at 136 pounds instead of 141 ....
Toto, it looks like we aren't in Maintenance-Land any more ... but I can see it juuuussssttt Over There ..... (currently sitting at ~ 137 / 138)
I think my stationary bike is gonna get extra-usage for November (or longer) along side the waking exergame. The bike burns much more calories per minute. (has ~ 12 plus preprogrammed options for variety)6 -
BMI Reality Check - that is so true! I have a love/hate with my BMI right now. Of course, getting a phone call from my doctor's office telling me that my cholesterol numbers are too high and I need to lose weight and exercise only confirmed what MFP and the BMI has been telling me. All the more reasons why I need a healthy lifestyle - and I want to be around for another 30 to 40 years for my son.
I noticed that the weight range for healthy, overweight, and obese was different than what I originally was using. I don't know if that is due to different weight loss/tracking websites or the weight chart I pulled up online was outdated. But for consistency's sake, I will use the info from MFP. I thought I needed a weight range of 130 to 144 to be at a healthy weight, but MFP says the healthy weight range is 115 to 155. Once I hit the "healthy" range I will figure out what my goal weight will be. But from what I have learned from others in the UAC - I shouldn't pick a single "number" for my goal weight, but a five-pound range goal weight is more realistic since weight fluctuates.3 -
I have a smart scale which actually displays that I am healthy at the minute. It once showed ‘UNDERFAT’ for my very fit DH. 😂
As well as weight, it measures BMI, muscle/fat/water%, recommend TDEE, and bone weight. Very useful.
However, all of these are only indications, and vary from day to day.4 -
Hi to all,
I'm so happy that you have found a way to add a whole new dimension to relationship building and friendship!
I would like you creative social ones to help me and the team next week.
On Monday morning, I'm going to get into my pickup truck at 6 a.m. I'll have my border collie, Chica is the back seat and a horse trailer being towed behind. A lovely brown horse named Cocoa will be back there. It will be two hands on the wheel and 1,800 miles over 3 days...if all goes well.
Sunday evening, I'll do a Monday opening post, I would like someone to volunteer to take Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
For example, Terri on Tuesday; MaltedTea on Wednesday and Maddie on Thursday. Or whomever would be willing. Let me know at @RangerRickL
Thanks!!1 -
I can do one day. I’m often one of the first to post anyway. I’ll take Wednesday.2
-
@RangerRickL I can do one as well. I can do Thursday.1
-
@RangerRickL happy to help as well. You would possibly still need Tuesday covered. The OCD side of me would just love a tad of guidance. Look to me like opening post goes up something like 10+ PM EST the night before, so that would be Monday night at 10 PM. If you want me to do it, just tag me and confirm.1
-
@RangerRickL if I don't do it on Tuesday, I'll forget 😭. Just let us know what to do. We got you.
Chica and Cocoa sound like great company, btw!0 -
@RangerRickL It looks like you got the days covered, but if not, let me know and I can do one!0
