OK guys, here is the very non-professional job I did at knife making.

The first image is of the knife blank, ground to shape and drilled out for the handle pins and to reduce weight. It is sitting on the Harbor Freight 1 X 30 in. belt grinder I used. I screwed up the plunge line pretty bad.

The second image is my tin-can forge setup. I heated the knife in the forge, then plunged it into the oil in the bread pan, to harden it.

Next shot is of the blade after I tempered it in a 400 degree oven for an hour. The wheat gold color is what you are looking for.

Finally the knife with walnut handle attached. The pins are made from1/8-inch brass brazing rod.

I need to make a sheath - to protect myself as much as the knife. This thing is really sharp. The first thing I did after showing it to Rita, was cut myself.

Cool project. What is the lining in the can made of?

Is that a propane torch? MAPP?

The forge is lined with a 50/50 mix of plaster of Paris and sand. I use a MAPP gas torch, rather than propane, because it is hotter. The problem I have is that the forge is too shallow for a blade longer than about 4 1/2 inches. I need a bigger can.
