Happy Monday,
Yesterday, @pamsja applied new insights that she gained from other UACers...
Thanks so much for recommending that episode of Half Size Me--I listened to it on my walk this morning, and it helped me think through a bunch of things I'll need to figure out as I transition into maintenance. I found it really interesting when the interview subject pointed out that maintenance and weight loss involve the same skills; you're just using them for a different purpose.
That helped me realize something important: I've always thought of maintenance as NOT doing things. Not dieting, not going to Weight Watchers meetings, not skipping sweets, etc.. Thinking of it as an active process--just like working at weight loss--offers me a lot of control that I've simply given up in the past. Now I just have to figure out how that control will benefit me over the long haul.

I'm working in Toulouse for next three days, so posting may be somewhat irregular. I should get a walk in every day, even if it's only to the Underground stop, some 15 minutes from the hotel. Meals and calories.... don't know, depends on what I can get ... Restaurants still closed here.6 -

Weights session 50 min and 30 min walk.5 -
Sorry, I couldn't get my photos to hide behind the spoiler tag.

Of course maintaining is an active process. That’s why I am here lol... It looks to me like a lot of the stress here recently is due to the easing up of the pandemic restrictions so more activities. One of the things which has always bugged me is that social events seem to want to center around food. Why not center around a walk or hike? Whenever I talk to friends about meeting up again their first thought is “let’s meet for lunch or dinner”.

Maintenance is a topic directed at me. All my struggles have begun once I labeled myself as maintaining. I'll head back to yesterday's posts and see what I missed. I certainly need a better understanding of it all. I am also looking forward to returning home later this week/weekend. I am hoping that environment supports my maintenance training better and that by the time I head south again many months from now, the skills will be better established and this environment will be easier to navigate.8

Exercise – yes bike 60 minutes, short walk, lots of pottering around, and some light cardio.
Tracking – yes
Calories – yes
We're going away for a few days tomorrow - just 3 nights in my motorhome - so I've been busy today sorting stuff and getting the van ready for it's first trip of the year. We're not going far, less than an hour drive, but at least it will be a change of scene. I will be using my phone instead of my laptop so checking in may be a bit hit and miss.
"We are better together" - so true, the support of the group is wonderful.7 -
I'm sorry to say I'll be taking pass #4 today due to lack of exercise though I will be fine with my logging/calories even though it's still early. I'm not feeling so great today and not up for doing much.5
-
Starting today and till the end of April, I'll be on maintenance. I have managed to shade off 1~2 kilos despite everything, I think that's good enough. I need those few days to be close to a break untill I can focus again on my diet. Eating meals I have not prepared, consume so much of my calories so being on maintenance is the best option for now.

Went for a walk this evening really windy felt more like fall then spring warming up later in week but rainy but so dry the rain will be welcome. Tracked and logged a good day relaxed at lunch with me myself and my guitar a good way to end a work from home lunch good night6

Well, this is pass 4 for me. I was going to do a 45 min spin class to cover the calories, but I feel tired and sore today, so I just did some yoga instead, which felt really nice. I am going to focus tomorrow on making sure my choices are filling and not quite so carb heavy.
Since I couldn't quite get the spoiler tag right earlier, I'm just going to post two pictures from my visit yesterday to the Met Cloisters. It is my favorite place in the city and really feels a world away. Besides the beautiful gardens, they also have some lovely unicorn tapestries (among other treasures).

September 14, 2020 – 153.0April has arrived and I am sitting here reflecting back on this month. It is the first month since September that I have closed the month with an “up”. That said, an up had to come at some point since at some point one is no longer trying/needing to lose weight, and I had passed my original goal back in January, I believe. The up on its own would be fine, but the habits, or lack thereof, that crept into my March are the concern. So, for the month of April, I will be focusing on returning to preplanning/pre-tracking as much as is possible and to not just thrown in the day it does not go as planned. I know that I know how to re-group and I need to make sure I find the time and energy for that. I want to up my cardio. Yes, I am “group walking” every day which burns calories, but honestly, I could walk at that pace for hours and hours without effort. I need to push myself, here and there, again. I will also be trying to maintain the social aspect of the group walks as well, so juggling all those time commitments will take a little focus. Lastly, I need to return to adding back exercises. I have not planked in a month, and rarely done exercises other than walking, running, or biking. So I need to figure out how to include bodyweight or dumbbell workouts. Here’s to April.April History

*** Sitting here as I write this, I have to wonder if posting my thoughts here this morning helped me to frame and get through the day. This morning, I did actually expect today to be a pass day, despite the slight optimism I expressed in my post. Ten minutes later, I decided to track a tentative day – carrot cake, stuffed shells and all. When I got done, I saw that even with every food included I could meet my calorie goals for the day. Portion control was the key. The plan was 90% accurate and the other 10% was adjusted on the fly. When I added something, I took something else away (sorry salad :P ). I enjoyed Easter with no pass today. The success feels good!

*** Had an interesting moment today that I hope will help me to understand the benefit of what was accomplished these 6 months. Today, I got home from a short grocery shopping including two bottles of wine to bring to friends on Sunday. I hate using the elevator at the building so I take the two flights to our condo. I carried all the groceries at once, from the car, through the parking and up the two flights. Not hard, but I could feel the difference. As an experiment, I walked directly to the scale when I got in our unit to see how high a combined weight I now was. I was still almost 9 lbs less that what I weighed in September, and almost 24 lbs less than my high in 2001. Hopefully experiments like this will help me keep focus, and keep my maintenance going. Yo-yo-ing has been my tendancy.

*** what a difference a day makes. So interesting seeing yesterday’s comment in light of how today went. Day started well by entering another 5K race and did well. Then guests failed to show on time and failed to communicate and threw off the days good intensions. *** Woke up to torrential rain. First rain here in months. Of course, this is the day after we spent the day applying grout sealant that could not get wet for 72 hours. So not only is the sealant wet, but apparently rain plus brand new screens creates some sort of black mud which is covering my no longer sealed grout. The day went to heck. No daily walk and, while spending the day re-cleaning tile and grout, made no others efforts that day.

Apple Watch TDEE: updated the following day – see spoiler
*** For March and April, I have struggled with the planning, tracking and meeting calorie goal aspect of my days. These past days, trying to empty the fridge and freezer before heading back north has further encouraged me to make spontaneous bad choices. Fortunately, the exercise habit that UAC has gifted me continues to hold strong. Few days left to April. Two will be still packing, then next begins our drive north, and my final day is spent visiting my MIL before heading off for the remaining 1400 miles.

Yes, yes, and yes. My exercise was limited, but I did some.
Went to the doctor today and he confirmed that my tired feelings are probably greater than they should be from the surgery. He took blood for a bunch of tests to see if he can figure it out. He did however say that I should do whatever exercise I can, it won't hurt, even if its limited. That was good news.10 -
