Hey everyone. Sorry it took so long to update everyone on my competition.
The weekend was great, it was the biggest Jiu Jitsu competition ever held in South Africa and everyone brought their best game. It was amazing to watch all the athletes from the smallest little ones through to the professionals. We live streamed all the fights to keep numbers in the venue down (only those competing in that group and their coaches and parents for kids were allowed). I got to watch it all up close though as one of the referees. I walked away with silver in my division and was happy with my performance and inspired to improve. However I woke up on Tuesday not feeling that great and tested positive for COVID. Our country is just heading into the third wave and the city that hosted the competition has the highest numbers at the moment so it was always a risk despite all the precautions I took. I thankfully seem to have a mild case and after the first 24 hours which included fever etc only really have the symptoms of a head cold. Obviously not getting any exercise in and not up to logging my food. Eating reasonably because I’m using the opportunity to clear out my freezer and cupboards. (I can order online or get friends to drop stuff off if needed, but I’m not using that just yet). I did get a delivery of lemons and clementines straight from the farm though because they are the best medicine! And tonight my friends are doing burger evening so I’m getting a drive by burger! If I don’t get worse, I’m clear to leave home again in a week and hoping that I can start with some light yoga tomorrow.

3 x Yes.
As I had only done 20 minutes walking when I got back to the hotel after examining all day, I had to go for another 20 minutes if I actually wanted to eat and stay under calories, even though it was raining. So, off I went, and to reward this virtuous behaviour it stopped raining and for a few minutes a very pale bit of sunshine smiled on me. I did another 25 minutes walking, and then I could eat a salad (no microwave available) and an apple. The exam venue did have a microwave, so I could have some pasta and a mini quiche for lunch. Tracked it all.
Off to Toulouse tomorrow. Have mostly sorted my food for tomorrow. The venue there also has a microwave and I will be home tomorrow night, although probably it'll be too late and I'll be too tired to eat, let alone cook...
@Dory_42 Rotten about the Covid-19 after your triumph, but good that your symptoms are only mild. Get lots of rest!7 -

@donna25trinity not long before you are sending that one off to college... LOL
@Winner_in_Life I meant to comment that your VO2max is incredible! I think the highest i get for my runs is 35.5.
@Dory_42 take care of yourself and give your body room and nutrients it needs to recover completely. To me RHR is always a good judge of how stressed my system is.
Did I exercise for at least 20 minutes? yes. I was really on edge/grouchy/irritable this morning due to an unscheduled call which meant I could not run when I wanted to so after the call I was even MORE grumpy and decided to do my run between calls. I channeled that energy for a pretty speedy 10k. LOL. And what's more I feel better.
Did I stay within my calorie budget for the day? yes
Did I keep track of everything I ate and drank? yes prelogged now
@RangerRickL I have to be nosy. You had shared that you were going to CostaRica with your niece in late May/June but it looks like that was cancelled. Are you and Rosy able to take an alternative vacation to someplace fun now?

Exercise- yes – lots of cardio indoors and a short bike ride this morning.
Logging – yes
Calories – yes
It was only a short bike ride because we had really strong winds today (plus light rain). So I just went down to the shops but coming back was really hard work against the 50 km/hr wind.

@WhatMeRunning wrote a long but interesting post yesterday about mental health and looking after yourself. It is so true. I had a long history of struggling with my weight – never really obese but overweight much of the time – and very little exercise. I was in a difficult relationship with my husband (now ex), and just got through day to day caring for my children working in a job I didn’t enjoy and hoping things would get better. It was only when the children were young adults that I finally admitted that I needed to leave and look after myself. I felt so much better and actually after about a year my ex also admitted that he was also happier. I got fit, lost weight, changed career and was much happier. I maintained the healthy lifestyle for nearly 20 years until I retired and then lost my mojo again. Then three years ago I picked myself up, joined MFP and lost 22 kg and got back into exercise. Here I am, coping with the dreadful events of the last 18 months, and generally managing quite well.10

@Dory_42 - (((hugs)))
Well done on the silver medal, but tough luck on the COVID. Hope you recover quickly and don’t suffer any more symptoms.

Debating registering for a half marathon. I’ve done one once, and I’d like a better experience this round. I do wonder if it makes more sense to wait until I’m at my goal weight to do so because last time I didn’t lose any weight while training - if anything I gained a little. Plus it will be easier on my joints at a lighter weight, and I can still up my mileage a smidge here or there to keep it challenging.
@SModa61 - as far as topics I think it would be interesting to know what the one thing everyone took the longest to learn on their journey that they wish they had learned earlier. (Hopefully that makes sense. Lol.) Also maybe what their favorite workout dvd/channel/YouTube video is, or their go to songs on workout playlists are. I’m always looking for new recommendations on those topics.6 -
Thanks for the anniversary wishes my UAC friends now we work on another 32!!
Walked 44 minutes at lunch really hot but occasional nice cool walk through woods then back to the ball field a new spot to walk and talk. Tracked and logged happy weekend😎5 -

I started 75 Hard yesterday which is a 75 day mental toughness challenge. I plan to post my days completed on here just for an extra layer of accountability. Even though I'm on medication, I've been struggling for months with my life-long battle with depression which managed to slither it's way back into my life again. I believe this challenge will allow me to get my act together!
75 Hard Challenge- Day 2 Complete5 -
@mshawski I'm not sure what specifically you would like to be more enjoyable, but I've run a lot of half marathons ranging in weights and had various experiences from them. For reference I am 6 feet 2 inches tall meaning my ideal weight per BMI is180 pounds. The heaviest I have run a half marathon is 276 pounds and the lightest is 220 pounds. The events at the lighter weights were definitely my most enjoyable for a lot of reasons, being my fastest and running them non-stop come to mind first. I was also running that distance as my regular weekly long runs at both ends of those weights, be it an event or not. Despite having the fitness to run that distance regularly at the higher weight those runs were less pleasurable and I happened to burn out on long runs at one point and switched to shorter distance running and strength training. Alternatively when doing that distance weekly at the lighter weight I felt ready to take on ultra marathon training and go even further, only stopping due to injury after a fall on a trail run.
Just my experience as one person.
ETA: Just in case it wasn't apparent, I definitely believe long distance running is way more pleasurable at lighter weights than heavier. Not that weight should necessarily stop someone, of course.2 -

@WhatMeRunning - thanks for the advice - I appreciate it as I have much to learn about running still. I had a rather… odd experience that I’m looking to replace with a better one, it’s not weight related. Lol. It’s probably the dumbest reason for a bad running experience ever, but hey - that’s me 😂🤦🏻♀️ I’m irrationally scared of clowns and there were clowns at mile marker 8 that caused some sprinting I shouldn’t have done, then cramping, then walking so I didn’t run the entire thing which was disappointing. I’m looking for a calmer run with less irrational fear, and maybe being in better shape to actually handle the sprinting if it does happen again. 😂🤦🏻♀️
The weight piece was more that I don’t seem to be able to lose weight while training for things like this so it seemed like I should finish reaching my weight goal before adding in another goal to distract from it. Added bonus was it would be easier on my body.
Keep running tips coming though! I for sure need them!3 -
@Dory_42 Congrats on the Silver, sorry to hear about Covid, hope you don't get any worse.
@Bill70sStrong Good luck with the challenge.
Yes x 3 for me today. Very hot and muggy here today, we broke a record for the heat. I'm okay with it, more incentive to get in the pool.1 -
@mshawski that is not a dumb reason at all, clowns or otherwise. Sprinting anywhere save for the very end is going to suck horribly! And clowns are a bit creepy, plus I've had a couple friends who were absolutely terrified of clowns, so I get it.
There isn't any training to accommodate a sprint inside that sort of an endurance effort if you are planning to race it at your best HM effort/pace. If you are just wanting to run it though then you could do some sprint interval training inside some of your shorter runs, and later try doing a sprint interval or two during some of your long runs (only a few, and only every other week at most). The key is to allow yourself recovery in Zones 1 and 2 for a couple minutes between sprints and keep your efforts after that in Zone 3 or lower. What will give you the most trouble is any higher effort after those sprints.
As for the weight gain, there could be muscle gain, and if you have any extra fat pounds to spare you can counteract that. But the biggest thing that can cause upwards of a 10 pound gain is the extra stores of glycogen your half marathon training will train your body to begin storing in order to fuel your body through long runs. You're going to need that though so it just comes automatically with the distance training. That is technically water weight though and can be easily lost after the event by simply not doing long distance training any more.5 -
Yes x 3.4

@SummerSkier Thanks for asking, Summer! Rose and I have decided to put our home and 40 acre farm up for sale. The Costa Rican trip was motivated by the desire to accompany our granddaughter to Spanish language school in Costa Rica. Since the trip is cancelled, we have begun the difficult emotional task of talking to real estate agents; video marketing guru, making a list of repair, remove and refresh. There are two homes on this property; barns; and other outbuildings. We have live cargo here too: a caretaker couple; 3 horses; one cat; one dog; and Rick/Rose.
We built this house 28 years ago, but the original farmhouse and barn are roughly 100+. It's a beautiful place to live, but it's time to simplify.
Rick
P.S. For many years, I have been involved with an equine activities and therapy program for persons with disabilities.
Whenever our home sells, our horses will have a home there.
Roxy, the rescue mare, is in Cave Creek, AZ being well kept.
