It’s commonly known and accepted that exercise is a great stress reliever. It also has all these other benefits (and boy I could use every extra brain cell I can get). My problem right now? I am swimming in stress, which I won’t explain now. Even thinking about carving out time to exercise is stressful.
So I’m curious – what has your experience been with stress and exercise? What do you do when you’re too busy to exercise?
Note: I do take the dog for a 30 – 40 minute walk most mornings. Used to be a run, but he’s slowing down and can’t handle the faster pace anymore. So if I were to walk him first, THEN go for a run – I’d have to start break of dawn and I’m not quite up for that either.

I never allow myself to be too busy to exercise. It's that important to me. It's meditation and self-healing.6

Exercise certainly can knock down stress. When my daughter was in high school, if she got worked up over something I’d make her do jumping jacks. She now hates jumping jacks…….she is 30.
Another note, gained 3lbs over dd’s 30th birthday weekend. They are already gone (within .2). Moral of the story is quick on quick off. If you have a slip up, get right back on your path before the weight becomes real.6 -
27th July
Yes, yes and yes.
Wow only a couple of days of July left. I cant believe im saying this but its been one of my easiest months of uac! No binge eating and only 1 day that i emotionally ate. I still find myself grazing at times while prepping dinner 4 bub but def not as much as i use to.
@biketheworld im sorry to hear ur stressed! As for exercise and stress i honestly know wat it feels like to be so stressed that working out is just too much, ive been there b4 and its not nice! I will say not to put too much pressure on urself as the fact ur doing walking still is honestly amazing and it may be where u need to be atm! I find that if i pull back on the intensity of my work outs for a bit i usually get super motivated the next day week or month. Im sure u will be the same and that u will come back with a vengeance! I exercise 1st thing in the morning and it def helps my mood, so much so that hubby notices. Xox6 -
@SModa61 you are so right about the "moral of your story"!
I believe that's one of the secrets to success. If I do have a bad day (or a "binge" day!), I don't beat myself up. Everyday is a new beginning - a "do-over" where I get to begin again!
All my adult life, I've "dieted", and when I got to my goal, I stopped "dieting". And... I've always gained most of the weight back (if not all - and then some!) This time around, I'm learning that I have to change my thinking. It's not a "diet" but a lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle of not eating in excess (staying under my calorie goal, no matter WHAT I have it set at!), and eating more freggies and less sugar and "junk food". My healthy lifestyle also includes walking 20-30 mins/day minimum, and yoga in the mornings most days. At my age, and due to osteoporosis, I'm also learning to include strength training a few days/week. But this "healthy lifestyle" has no end date. When I do eventually reach my goal weight, I will have to "work" on maintaining.... which will still need to include all of the above! I've determined that I'm going to be a life-time member of MFP!
I work 2 jobs and have a very active church and home life as well.... but no matter how BUSY I am, I can usually MAKE time for 20 minutes of exercise somewhere in my day! And I always feel better after I do!5 -
Great topic today. I have been feeling quite a bit of stress lately and my mood has been SUPER low. One of the adjustments is that I always used to use food to cope with that. Feel bad? Eat. Feel better? Eat. Bad day? Food will solve that.
I do exercise every single day now, even if that's only walking. And I say "only", but I think that's enough. If I am feeling crummy, I always feel better after a walk.
My key to working out in any form when I'm stressed is to get it in super early in the day. If I let the weight of the day pile on my shoulders, getting out to exercise feels daunting.
I have been struggling to get out of bed before work to do just that with my mood being low, and it makes the day much more of a grind than the ones where I do get up earlier. So that's my strategy - do it early and then I have a win early on.7 -

Did I exercise for at least 20 minutes? Yes
Did I stay within my calorie budget for the day? Yes
Did I keep track of everything I ate and drank? Yes
Kitchen Closed? Yes
Going "nuts" with nuts today? No (22 days-free )
(I go "nuts" with nuts most times, trying to continue a good habit this month. Counting the number of "nuts" free days.)
Pass day 1/3 (this is for accountability to myself and my records).
My attitude to exercise is roughly the same as @MadisonMolly2017 's.
I always ask myself the question which prescription is cheaper and last longing - "medicine" or "exercise"? My answer is always "Exercise".
When I am so stressed, I do a match in place (sometimes I dance) and listen to the News for at least 20 to 30 minutes and then take a hot bath or shower. I have found it very helpful.
Also, I don't want to write a "No" for exercise in UAC6 -

I try to get Exercise in everyday even if it's a small walk.3 -
Due to a planned early morning outpatient procedure I took no walks and moved my upper body strength workout to tomorrow. I made sure to keep moving around a lot and have almost 9k steps right now so should get well over 10k total for the day (hoping to get 15k if possible), so calling it a 3 x yes day.

I believe that in essence, exercising is a gift which gives you more life and also makes that additional life better than a life without it. So when life seems to get in the way of exercise, I try to step back and question what part of life is worth taking that gift away, and how can they not coexist?2 -

July 27th:
✅ Tracked all my calories
✅ Stayed under calorie goal
✅ Exercised more than 20 mins (went to the gym while kiddo was at his kinder gym class)
12/27 days (started July 12th, so 12/16 days from when I started)
4/3 pass days used
In the past, I found many excuses to not exercise - mostly that I didn't have time. I will admit my life was much busier then - working full time and running a home business after hours, as well as maintaining a household. But I really believe that we make time for what we perceive as the most important things. And that change in my mindset (along with closing the business down) has made a huge difference in how I've found time for exercise. Sometimes I like to "double up" my time by walking in place while watching TB - then I'm both exercising and getting some entertainment. But most of the time I exercise from 9pm onwards, after my son has gone to bed - at this time I would otherwise be doing housework or just lounging around, and I think my time is better spent in the home gym!
For those who do find it hard to make time for exercise, I want to mention something that I came across some time ago to save 30 hours a month. It is meant for workplace/business use but I think it can equally apply to any part of life. You take a SMART approach:
S - Self-aware: Ask yourself what things you do that waste time? What do you want to spend time on?
M - Map: Log your time in detail for a few days, noting all the things you do throughout the day and how long you spend doing each.
A - Analyse: Allocate your time/tasks into 4 buckets: Musts, Wants, Things I can delegate, Things I can reject
R - Reframe: Decide what you can do differently, what you can delegate or reject.
T - Take control: Implement your plan7 -
Yes x 3 today.
Loving the insightful comments on how to handle fitting exercise in when stressed. One of the habits I've been working toward since joining MFP is to exercise when feeling stressed (This replaces another behaviour that I stopped in 2020). When we put our cat down this May, I started biking daily and joined a challenge for June to keep it up. The endorphins really helped. My concern will be when I go back to the office and when winter comes. My daughter may be coming home in the Fall while she writes her thesis and she loves to exercise. I know she'll be pushing me so I'm looking to that helping me to continue some good habits.
@ashleycarole86 I like the idea of a win early on also. It helps to keep me in check throughout the day since I've already worked hard for the calorie burn and don't want to waste the effort.
@biketheworld, hope whatever is going on passes quickly for you!5 -

4/3 pass days no winners circle for me but…that’s ok I am still a winner. When I exercise on a regular basis I feel much better my knee OA is not so painful and the medicine ball is helping with my arm strength. I try to take time when at the office to walk at lunch it’s been hit or miss lately partly due to some intense knee issues. I have been spinning and slamming throughout the day when I am done work. As far as the elbow goes I think it’s as good as it will ever get I am thankful I regained almost my complete range of motion now to keep it.
I have tracked logged and exercised. Next month I am hoping to focus on reducing my carb intake I have been tracking the net carbs on and off I think I got this.3 -
✅✅✅ Yoga today. I didn’t go to class due to a scheduling conflict with a doc apt.4

@Mrs_Hoffer Yes, indeed. It must become everyday life. Crazy it took me until almost 60 to catch on.1 -
Three yes for me today. Tracking good, calories good, and did intentional exercise.
Long day. More with my house, more contractors and packing and donating. Then went to help my mother have a virtual medical appointment. She is such an emotional mess lately that she was in tears and shaking just thinking about talking to the doctor and saying my father and I were bullying her into discussing medical concerns (mind you 10 days ago she fell backwards down some stairs and over the iron handrail onto the flagstone floor below). Meanwhile, this morning one of their upstairs toilets broke and there is yellowish brown "water" dripping through the ceiling onto everything below. Plumber came, and my father is under the impression he will just repaint the ceiling. I replied that I was concerned it was sewerage coming through. His comment back was that it was likely "just" urine. Not sure how he thinks a urine soaked ceiling is even ok and should not be pulled out and replaced. Plus, I think it is more than urine. If his urine is that color, I have a new medical concern for him. Will I think this way in 25 years????? It scares me a bit.11 -

@SModa61 I'm sorry you have so much on your plate. Being the honest and reliable caregiving child is very difficult. One of my clients once described that once his wife had developed cognitive impairment, he had had to become his wife's parent.1

Very busy day on the farm and at the office. Virtuous work again today as we work on funding scholarships for college students.
Tracking: a bit difficult when eating at someone's house, but I am confident that I stayed in the lane
Calories: good
Exercise: I was out to the barn and working at 5:30 a.m. Lots of exercise before breakfast.3
