Saint Patrick's Day, or the Feast of Saint Patrick (Irish: Lá Fhéile Pádraig, lit. 'the Day of the Festival of Patrick'), is a cultural and religious celebration held on 17 March, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick (c. 385 – c. 461), the foremost patron saint of Ireland.
Saint Patrick's Day was made an official Christian feast day in the early 17th century and is observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion (especially the Church of Ireland), the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Lutheran Church. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general. Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, céilís (a social gathering with traditional Irish or Scottish music, dancing and storytelling), and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks. Christians who belong to liturgical denominations also attend church services and historically the Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol were lifted for the day, which has encouraged and propagated the holiday's tradition of alcohol consumption.
Saint Patrick's Day is widely celebrated in many areas around the globe. It's a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, and the Canadian province of Newfoundland. Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated in more countries than any other national festival.
We have people all over the world in this group, and we often celebrate different holidays - I just thought it was cool that this is one holiday that we all celebrate together - on the same date!!6 -
Funny story: I stopped by to see my granddaughter and my newest great-grandbaby Ivory Rose after work yesterday. It was so nice outside that we sat out on the porch for 20 mins or so just chatting (while I held the baby, of course!). She talked a little about her weight gain since having the baby and she said "grandma, I don't know how much you're into apps, but I found this cool one where I can log my food in a food diary, and keep track of how many calories I'm eating! It's called myfitnesspal!" I just laughed out loud! I told her I knew about it, LOVED it, and have been on it (off and on) since 2012. She said "oh wow!"
We then talked about how much easier it is to lose 20-30 lbs rather than 50-100 lbs.... but that we all have to start somewhere. I was able to talk to her about learning how to "maintain" and KEEP the weight off once we get to our goal - something that I never really understood or learned about in any diet books that I read when I was young. It would be wonderful if I could help her to understand (at age 24) something that I didn't learn/understand until I was 60!!!!!
What is something that YOU wished that you knew about in your 20s or 30s as far as weight loss or food? Or something that you would go back and tell your younger self now if you could?8 -
Erin Go Bragh, y'all! Yes this southern, 95% Irish child loves St.Patrick's Day! Brisket, cabbage, soda bread and fig and pear pie are on the menu today. Maybe some contra dancing will happen this week. Today is cardio day so maybe a little jig to my favorite Irish band, Rend collective. Definitely wearing my green. Shamrock compression socks will be supporting all of this today. That's the plan so far.

Continue to eat allergen free no matter how difficult. Take a 30 min walk everyday. Write out your feelings instead of eating them. Eat when you are hungry and stop when you reach enough.2 -
I hadn't realised it was St Patrick's Day until I saw a man in a silly green hat outside a pub earlier.
Another pass day for me.
Lots of walking again.4 -

Mostly that my natural thinness wasn't going to last forever. I never concerned myself with weight as I never gained. I even went through periods where I wanted to gain but couldn't because the amount of food it required was too much and made me feel awful. Around age 50 things changed. Menopause really does a number on many of us.3 -

Something I wish I knew in my 20s about weight: that if I continued eating like I was swimming competitively after quitting the swim team that in 3 years I would get to the point where I have to go to specialised stores to buy clothing. And it would take more than 20 years to lose it again.

Teresa I think you are spot on with your granddaughter. No one ever told me that you have to focus on maintenance. ever. I have really been an amazing success at losing 10-20 to even 30 pounds many times. Really i got very good at it I did it so many times. And it was not until the very last time that instead of focusing on LOSING I actually came up with a plan to maintain which was not just "stop dieting".
Did I exercise for at least 20 minutes? yes - finally acclimated to the time change and got a good 10K run in this morning before work.

In my early 20s (late 1960s) it was regarded as normal for married women to put on weight with each child.
I could eat whatever I liked because I was very active. I didn’t realise that as I became less active, that I should stop having second helpings and eating whatever I liked. I was successful in losing the weight, then would put it on again, but nobody ever suggested the idea of maintaining the lower weight.
Most of my friends and I yo-yoed for years, and gradually crept up in weight. It was a different time.3 -

I am sick and off to bed early tonight.
I guess I wish I'd told my younger self that binge eating and being reckless with food was not a good long term plan. I mean of course in the moment you know that but you feel powerless to change. That food doesn't solve problems. And also that I can have the confidence in myself to say no and to advocate for my own needs.6 -
NYY.
Haven’t run in several weeks, need to figure out how to work that back into the schedule. Still hitting the gym though, and feeling like it’s hitting me back harder 😂🤣💪🏻6 -

I wish I had known what I know now about processed food and healthy/unhealthy fats. Of course I knew excessive sugar was bad for you, but I had no clue about seed oils. I tried to lose weight by moderation/portion control with no real idea of the importance of whole food for nutrition or the extent that food manufacturers can use deceptive marketing practices-- labelling things as healthy that are not.

To young me...
Enjoy your youth, relish being healthy and be kind to your body- don't starve it or force feed it, try not to put too much alcohol or other substances into it- take care of it. It is the only one you get.

Would tell myself to stop trying to address symptoms (over-eating/drinking) rather than the source of the issue (thoughts>emotions). I'm learning this now and it has changed everything, not just in weight loss, but in my life as a whole. Also, make sustainable changes one at a time. "The way you get there is the way you'll stay there."5 -
Yes x3. I wish I could tell my younger self to embrace the body shape I have - rectangular torso with high hip bones (which forever look like muffin tops even at my thinnest) I was never happy, no matter my size, because I was comparing myself to a completely different body type.4

Exercised more
That I should have worked less & exercised more
That I should Never have followed the advice to eat 1,200 cals a day. I was literally starving. No wonder Indecided I was just hopeless at dieting. My BMR laying in bed now is more than that - let alone when I was 20, 30, 40c, 50
That the American food scene is toxic , so you need to be strong to buck the stays quo

U r so right @mrs_hoffer like u I wish I knew about the above in my 20s. How lucky is she to hve u to give her that valuable life changing info. Xo3 -

March has been really interesting for me I hve learnt that 3 months at a deficit is too long for me personally. I am going to switch to maintaince on the 23rd of March and if i decide to take a deficit in the future I will only do it for a month at a time cos any longer only causes me to feel deprived and over eat etc. Its been a really good and valuable experiment but not a very successful one weight loss wise!
