✈️DESTINATION - Guatemala - 6,000 Miles & Read Labels & 10 Minutes of Happiness
The challenge begins on Saturday morning. Exercise & 10 Minutes of Happiness & Meal Planning done before SATURDAY DOES NOT COUNT!!!!
Tulum, Mexico is known for its Mayan ruins and beautiful beaches; but it’s also known for hordes of tourists! Nearby Guatemala is all this but without the crowds! Guatemala, is a small mountainous Central American country with a rich culture and boundless outdoor adventures. It is one of those rare finds that appeals to adventurers, culture seekers, beach worshippers and travelers looking for a little relaxation. Enjoy the amazing beauty of the lakes, ocean, rivers, waterfalls, beaches, coral reefs, mountains, active volcanoes, tropical jungles, rainforests and ruins.
It was once the beating heart of the ancient Mayan Empire. Now it is a cultural hot spot ranging from colonial architecture and cobbled streets in Antigua to the Mayan ruins of Tikal. Visitors are surprised to discover that the Mayans are still a distinct ethnic group with 21 indigenous Mayan populations. Much of their ancient culture has been passed down and blended with Spanish customs from the 16th century Spanish conquerors.
Let’s hit a few fun spots. Tikal National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was a Mayan city deep in the jungle. This National Park, is in a 341 square miles biosphere reserve, protecting rainforest and wildlife habitat. Steep pyramids rise above the jungle's lush green canopy populated by birds, iguanas, monkeys, jaguars, pumas, toucans and other wildlife. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 for its “extraordinary biodiversity and archaeological importance” a first.
Tikal was occupied between 600 BC and AD 900, and has more than 3,000 structures, ranging from pyramids and temples to plazas and an acropolis. It is one of the largest Mayan archaeological sites. Walking around Tikal gives you a feeling for what a Mayan city was actually like.
Lake Atitlan is a crater lake surrounded by volcanoes and is a living hub of Mayan cultures. As you cruise the lake you will see surrounding volcanoes, coffee fields and indigenous villages (each village known for something different).
The country’s many active volcanoes form a ‘ring of fire’ in an arc across the country. Pacaya is one of the most famous and well-loved because it feeds a series of hot springs in the surrounding towns.
Livingston on Guatemala’s Caribbean Coast, is a small town of brightly painted wooden houses set amidst a coconut groves and surrounded by jungle. The people are a cultural blend of indigenous Guatemalan, African and Caribbean people with a distinctive cuisine, music, dance, language and lifestyle.
Guatemala is an undiscovered surfing mecca. El Paredon on the coast is a surfing town, populated with a number of surf shacks sporting comfy hammocks. Here you can watch turtles hatching, and then magically heading for the sea. The beach faces west, so it has amazingly beautiful sunsets. Take a colorful chicken bus to get there. It’s Guatemala’s best and most exciting transportation system. There is no maximum capacity so it can be a loud fun and crazy ride.
Semuc Champey is series of natural pools filled with clear waters. You can hike up for a marvellous view or spend the day swimming in the exquisite turquoise limestone pools and waterfalls.
Enjoy a stroll along in beautiful Antigua City; the one-time capital of Spanish colonial rule in Guatemala. It is now a UNESCO world heritage site. Explore the 16th-century Spanish colonial architecture and old-world aesthetic. Find the Chocolate Museum/Store, then at sunset have a rooftop cocktail and enjoy a 360° view of the city. See three volcanoes and the warm red glow of lava after the sun goes down. Wonderful!

📝Living the Good Life - Read Labels & 10 Minutes of Happiness
When you compare food products do you know which is the best choice? This week empower yourself by knowing EXACTLY what you are consuming so you can make better choices. Read Nutrition Facts label & ingredients, to get an honest picture of what you are actually eating. Do you know what you are looking for besides calories?
The 5% & 20% Rule. Anything listed in the percent daily value column that is 5% or less is a LOW number for nutrients. This is a good range for things that you want to limit (fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium), but too low for things you want to eat plenty of (fiber, protein, calcium, and vitamins). Anything listed as 20% or more is HIGH. This is a bad range for things that you want to limit (fat, saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium), but a good range for things you want to eat plenty of (fiber, protein, calcium, and vitamins). This is a general guideline, and you should always follow your doctor's orders regarding special dietary ranges that are appropriate for you.
Here is an example of something I found interesting. I buy almond ‘milk’ for breakfast smoothies. Why almond ‘milk’ and not cow’s milk? 1) Fewer calories 2) It’s shelf stable so it can be stored in the pantry till opened 3) I like to have a vegetarian meal a few times a week 4) A good source of calcium
Let’s Compare the Calcium in Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Unsweetened Original vs Silk Almond Unsweetened Original as per the actual boxes of ‘milk’ in my fridge.
Blue Diamond has 2% of daily calcium
Silk Almond Unsweetened Original has 30% of daily calcium
Wow so not all almond ‘milk’ is the same!
Why is it important to read labels to get correct information? My Fitness Pal has a large food database. It’s a good source of information, but is it always correct? Here is information copied from the MFP database. Note the CALCIUM IS WRONG for both almond ‘milk’ products!

✔️When you look up nutritional information in My Fitness Pal you can improve the accuracy of the nutritional information. If it’s wrong you can correct it if you wish.

Is this data accurate? Yes or No or I Don’t Know
This week each day read at least 3 food packages, labels or menus. To get the most out of this challenge, check out items you eat regularly or are tempted to eat - read the nutrition and ingredients and be informed. How many versions of "sugar" are listed in the ingredients? What percentage of your daily value of sodium does your item contain? Exactly how many servings are in the package? You may be surprised by what you find. In the event that you don't eat packaged foods on a particular day of this week's challenge, you may use other items from your pantry to earn your points for the day. If you cook from scratch look up your commonly used ingredients in My Fitness Pal or elsewhere to see the nutritional content and count that as a label. If you are tempted to eat fast foods look up the nutrition values online and count that as a label.
✔️To score points this week
1. Read 3 Food Labels a Day = 10 points all or nothing. Daily maximum 10 points.
2. 10 Minutes of Happiness - DELIBERATELY make yourself happy for 10 minutes. 10 points all or nothing.
