WELCOME to all walkers, whether visiting or new to the group, or our longtime walking/ exercise buddies!
It is already March, 2023, and time to start a new monthly challenge! So let's make March another extraordinarily awesome month while we continue to walk and workout each month together. There are still so many possibilities and opportunities for a healthy year, no matter what the first two months may have brought us so far this year. Every month is another opportunity because we are walking strong, not just for the current month, but hopefully for a lifetime.
Are the trees beginning to leaf out, or are tiny flowers or bulbs peeking up through the snow for you, because March is coming in like a lamb? Then getting outdoors to walk your miles will ensure that we won't miss any spring flowers or the beautiful budding trees as they begin to announce spring is finally here. Walking outdoors is an important part of fitness walking, when possible, for those who enjoy walking some miles or minutes outdoors when possible.
Or, is March is coming in like a lion where you live? Then having Leslie's, or other exercise DVDs, or the many workouts on the various streaming platforms continues to be a great alternative to walking outdoors. Please post your workouts whenever it seems good for you to do so, especially when you discover other great walks or workouts, so that we all can benefit from them also..
However you get your walk or workout in please post your miles or minutes that you have walked or exercised, however you did it... it is all good! With spring on the horizon don't forget that yard and garden work definitely counts as exercise πΉ.
We are a happy, supportive group, and I promise that joining us this month will motivate, challenge, as well as inspire you!
Set your personal goal for how many miles and/or minutes that you want to walk or exercise, indoors or out, this month. Or however you set your goal is this month, if it not actually in "miles/ minutes". This is your own personal goal . Please post your results daily, weekly, or whenever you like or have the time to post it. Even when life gets busy and you can't post as often as you would sometimes like to, keep on walking or working out! Stay strong! And post later on.
If you find this challenge in the middle of the month it doesn't matter which day of the month that you join in. Just set your goal to reflect what you want to walk/ workout for the remaining days in the month. You are always welcome !

Hello, Spring 2023! The birds returned today and were creating quite the stir outside as they sort out the pecking order again. I hope our walking friends return this month as the bird have.
I missed my mileage last month but hit all my Apple Watch Challenges.

Hi texasgardnr and Deeder! Oh my gosh! Where did everyone go ... says she who has also been gone! :laugh:
Life got kind of crazy for us and it is still a little crazy. The last I was here was the fall before my son informed me that he and his wife both had a sabbatical from their universities and they were coming home (i.e. to the US, which means to our house) right after Thanksgiving (Nov 2021)and staying until March! Dennis and I had been working on our downstairs a little each day, but with COVID, we were not in a big hurry. That changed and we were working daily trying to get every thing ready and dealing with the holidays. It was crazy!!! But, we got to spent last winter with our 7 and 3 year old grandchildren and it was wonderful. Our granddaughter went to school here (NYS requires children who are living in the state for more than 30 days to be enrolled in school and Netherlands also required it for her to come to the US for that long) and got to ride what my grandson called "the big yellow bus from his book!" They do not have school buses in Netherlands so they had only seen and read about them in books.
They left mid-March and flew back again in July for a month. Since COVID was waning, we made plans to go to Netherlands for Christmas. Then in October, I got COVID and in November, Dennis got it. COVID is no joke! When I got it this time, I realized that I had had it in February 2020 and did not know it. I was exhausted and coughing constantly but assumed it was a cold and the flu all at once, but there was no test for it at that time. This time, my abs took a real beating from all the coughing, but the fatigue was not as bad as before. We got through that and then Dennis began having these hyperventilating episodes, was lethargic, had some tremors and had swollen ankles. His new MD traced it to a sensitivity to the pain meds for his knees! Who knew????? We stopped the meds and all of his symptoms subsided within the month, so we could go to Netherlands. He had his knees drained before we left and they injected cortisone and he was 100% better!
When we got back from Netherlands at the end of January, there were several calls from his heart specialist and the results of his last electrocardiogram showed that his aortic stenosis (which was diagnosed in 2012 actually and they have been watching ever since) had moved from moderate to severe and they want to do a valve replacement. It does not seem to end for us! Jeez-0-pete!
All of this means that I have had little bandwidth to focus on workouts. However, I am back to tracking on MFP to get the emotional eating under control and this month I really want to get at least 2.5 miles on my Garmin every day. I know I was doing 5+ and strength workouts before, but for now, I just have to start getting back in to shape. Cleaning my house is exhausting me and that is ridiculous!!
Long story short, I am back ... hopefully posting daily results even though I might not log on every day. AND, there is no spring here. We have more snow right now that we have had all winter and we are getting ready for another Big Storm that will dump 18-24" of snow on us. :laugh: I love it and am happy to wait another month for spring!

@zichab !! So Glad you found your way back here. WOW, What an adventure life has been for you while you were gone. I suspected I had Covid in Jan 2020. Even asked my Dr about it, and she blew the idea off. I'm still convinced I had it, especially after I got a confirmed case of Covid in Oct 2022 and all the symptoms were the same right down to my Watch notification for a racing heart while sitting.
I hope your hubby is doing better now as well. Setting smaller goals is important in all recoveries.
We had some "back-to-back" winter snow/ice events recently and another round is due tomorrow. The projections have settled down from 18" to 6".

@Deeder522 -Thanks!!! I never intended to be gone, but life had different ideas!
You no doubt DID have COVID in Jan 2020! I do not care what the MDs say, COVID was rampant in MI before anyone knew what it was. I went back and looked at my absentee students between the Christmas break and spring break and the rate was over 43%, which I never had before. No sooner did we shut down in March than students started to report that their parents were sick. No way it was not spreading long before that. Detroit Metro has hundreds of International flights every day just like NYC and it was spreading much earlier than anyone knew. Once you have it the second time, you recognize the signs and symptoms, although some were different for me between the 2 variants.
We have a huge storm coming in tonight from MI :laugh: and Detroit Airport has closed. I have been thanking all my old colleagues at Mott for sending me so much snow this year! It seems all of our storms have come in from the west across MI instead of up the coast like they usually do. Meh-it's all good. March-in like a lion for sure!!!

Wow, @zichab, what a story! You certainly have had the best reason of all of us to not be here.... family and grand children with you, travel and other happenings! So busy, but so good!! I'm also glad that your husband's symptoms subsided so that you could also travel!
You both are correct that Covid is no joke at all. I am still fighting the Covid fatigue π₯Ί, but doing increasingly better! I still have some of the being easily winded, and a bit of the racing heart occasionally. Thankfully, the coughing is gone. In mid January my husband and I both started out with stomach bug symptom, but felt way too sick for just that, so I thought it was the flu. Nope- neither of those two. The Doctor at the urgent care said he had been seeing more often patients with stomach bug symptoms being diagnosed as Covid. As we were π·. Surprise, surprise.
Where I live March didn't seem to know it it is the lion or the lamb, but finally decided on the lamb this weekend. Previously we had the high winds, but missed the hail in my neighborhood, and had only some of the rain that had been predicted. Now sunshine and moderate temperatures with sheets hanging out on the line! I'll take it.

My husband and I have been shoveling snow and bringing wood from our woodpile to the porch and stacking it. I am definitely getting some strength training, but not many miles. It's all good because we are doing something!
Oh my gosh Mary! I cannot imagine having a stomach bug as a symptom of COVID on top of all the others!! All the coughing is hard enough on your stomach without the added burden of an upset stomach. You two got more than your fair share from COVID that is for sure. I think as long as you are still struggling with being winded, you will also be fatigued as it is hard to get enough oxygen for energy. Hopefully as the weather get better, the warm sunshine will drive the rest of the symptoms away.
We do not usually see anything like spring up here until late April early May. Last year, our last measurable snow storm was on April 22 and we got 8 inches. There are pretty snowflakes falling today, not enough to amount to anything really. Just enough to be pretty when I look out the window.

Have I mentioned that I HATE DST???? Well I do! :laugh: It drags me down every year and messes with my circadian rhythms and I am just drained. I am sure it is why I love fall and winter so much and have so much more energy in those seasons. It is snowing today and we are expecting a huge snow storm tonight through tomorrow so I plan to be moving more for the next few days. We brought wood in this morning and have the shovels at the ready!!! Bring on the 6-12" 'cause I am ready!2 -

I'm currently safe from snow although I woke up to a fresh 3" this morning.
This weekend I started a significant cleanout of your den. It's a decent size room but it serves multiple purposes so it gets cluttered quickly. Rearranged where the coats and shoes sit. Moved the "client drop zone" where the coats and shoes were. Removed 1 mountain bike to where it should be for winter storage. Cleaned the entire fireplace area, including the mantel. Conditioned the mantle too. Then the fun part. We have carpet in this room and it's old at least 25 years probably more. I pulled back a corner to see what might be under the carpet expecting plywood but instead found linoleum. So this spring we will rip the carpet out and buy some flooring time with the linoleum that is under there. Fingers's crossed that its in decent condition.1 -

We have 12 more inches of snow and it is glorious! I know everyone else, including many of our friends, are celebrating the return of spring, but it is at least 2 months off here so we are celebrating the beauty of our first Nor'easter snow of the season on the Hemlocks and Spruce! :laugh:
Oh Deeder! How great to find a floor that you did not expect. Did you lift the linoleum and make sure it is plywood under there? Hardwood floors were the norm in MI (with wood that is now extinct there as well) until the 50s and 60s when linoleum became the flooring of choice. Then, with the advent of the oil embargo in the 70's, EVERYONE installed carpet to keep floors warmer. As a result, if your house is older than 1950, you may have hardwood floors underneath the linoleum! We discovered that in 1976 when we bought our first house (built in 1945) in NY. We decided to put down plywood and new oak floors, only to find that when we scrapped up 2 layers of linoleum, there were oak floors (beneath all that glue- UGH!!!) in need of a deep sand, but beautiful when they were finished. Our MI house was built in 1963 and it had white oak floors, which are very costly now, and they were all covered with carpet and, if can believe this one, ceramic tile in some rooms!!!! My DH got them all striped and sanded and restored, but it was a huge job! We love discovering the history of old houses and it is always amazing to see what is underneath the floor or behind walls!!! Enjoy your discoveries!!!!1 -
Good afternoon to @zichab and @Deeder522, and anyone peeking in π. You are both doing great with your miles and fitness challenges, It was fun reading your posts about the weather, as well as floors and older homes. Having lived in Pennsylvania for many years, I experienced the surprises of the layers of flooring also. I'd love to still live in my childhood home if I lived there now. The old wooden staircase as well as the wood frames for the windows and doors, porches, and old fashioned roses. There is just something beautiful about the older homes in the north. And the same with the older homes that I rented parts of when I was out of school, they were also wonderful. The discoveries of what lay under various old decrepit carpets were indeed interesting, and over time we all became a part of what some one might find under the layers if they looked π today. Good memories.
Here we had dipped back into the 30-40s with cold high winds and some rain for about a week. Now it looks like it will be back to the 70s-80s again later on this week, and perhaps a more spring like rain. We've had to turn the furnace back on again for a few days, which very seldom happens in March.
Let's not even mention the change in time back to DST π₯Ίπ.
I'm doing much better, with no coughing, and I think the racing heart is behind me now. I feel far less fatigued and weak than before, but still lacking in strength and stamina, if that makes any sense. I've had hardly any episodes of the shortness of breath! So I'm grateful to say I've almost put Covid symptoms behind me! Now to get back to having energy and actually feeling like I'm accomplishing things again, such as getting the flower gardens ready for spring/ summer and the house back in order after the plumbing/ water leak incidents.

Our exploration of what's under the carpet continued with the finding of more linoleum in the dining room and hallway to the bedrooms. So we'll add those areas to the spring tear-out. This will leave carpeting in the living room, bedrooms, and the finished area of the basement. We also confirmed that there are no hardwood floors under the linoleum. The retro flooring will be our starting point going forward.
@texasgardnr So glad to hear you're getting past the post-COVID ick.
We received just under 3" of snow Friday/Saturday but it all started melting yesterday and will probably be gone by tomorrow.

Oh Deeder, I am sorry you did not find wood floors under the linoleum. This house did not have any hardwood floors either, which seemed strange to us considering how many saw mills were here in 1963 when it was built. However, it was built as a year round camp (water sports in summer, winter sports in winter) and they probably saw no need for fancy floors. We had cork, linoleum and vinyl block floors and they were stuck down with some horrible black stuff that we could not get up, so we used contractor paper over it. It was a mess, but we have hardwood floors now. The discovery is half of the fun of renovations though!
I am so glad you are finally feeling better Mary and your energy will return slowly I am sure. COVID takes a lot out of you and recovery for me was slow going both times. Nice warm weather might help though. We are getting another snow storm this weekend, but it has managed to climb into the 40s this week, so the snow on the ground has taken a hit. The plowed up snowbanks are still pretty high, but we noticed our little Hemlocks have emerged from the unplowed snow and they are about 12-16 inches high and there tops are finally visible so we probably have 8-10 inches left. They are predicting 3-6 and then a warm up again so it will probably not last long. Our last snow in 2022 was on April 22, so spring is not a guarantee here until May anyway.
It does not look like I am walking around as much as I think I am :grumble: ! I need to add Leslie back in next month and get my activity level up before my grandchildren get here this summer! I got out my yoga mat and all my Leslie DVDs and bands so I can get at it next month and 2 of my bands had fused together!!! :laugh: I think that may be a sign that it has been awhile since I was seriously working out! :ohwell:
This year will change all that as I am on a "New Me in '23" plan where I start a new habit every month and next month is back to my Leslie workouts. Between COVID, retirement, moving and Dennis' health issues, I am way off track. In January, I put together and wore an outfit every day, NOT sweatpants and a hoodie . I kept that up and in February added wearing makeup again every day ( I feel better and it forces me to do better skin care), in March, I kept up the Jan and Feb habits and started tracking in MFP again. April is working out with Leslie 15 minutes at first and working up to 30-45 minutes by the end of the month. My hope is that by December, I will feel much more like myself again.

I met both of my goals this month. It warmed up just enough for an outside walk on Saturday.
@zichab, I understand how life can throw you off the health journey. My DH has had a heck of a trip the last few years. He has to be gluten-free, dairy-free (alternatives too), and low Fodmap. He hasn't eaten outside of our house in over a year. Which means I cook every meal for him. It probably would be easier on me if I ate the same things but I still struggle with good fruit and veggies.

Well, I did not do too well with my exact goal, but I have undergone a mindset change and am anxious to get started with Leslie tomorrow!!!! I have logged my eating every day in March and am anxious to log my workouts in Garmin Connect as my son is on there now. I got him a Garmin watch for Christmas and he is getting kind of uppity about his "badges," which is how Garmin rewards different activities. I'll see tomorrow how slowly I'll need to start, but my goal is 45 minutes and 3 mile walks by the end of the month.
My heart goes out to your husband Deeder and you, as I went through this last winter with my daughter-in-law. She has Hashimoto's disease, but she was also experiencing chronic pain and digestion issues that mimicked Chron's Disease. She was following an elimination diet when she was here and was dairy-free, gluten free, night-shade veggie free, sugar free and additive free. She has always been soy free because of the Hashimotos, so it was a challenge. Grocery shopping and cooking were an experience, but it was also hard for her.
As usual, it is snowing here (about 1/2 inch so far, but it is really coming down!) and Easter is in 11 days! I am thinking there will not be too many Easter bonnets around here!

@zichab and @Deeder522 , I am truly so glad to see you both still here finishing out the month, especially since I hadn't been on line here since the 19th. I was almost afraid to look in case no body had been here.
Wow, you both have experienced a lot with family members with various illnesses that affect what they are able to eat and for you to have to manage all of that. That truly has to be very difficult.
@zichab , what a great idea of doing a "New Me in '23" plan! You are rocking that idea for sure, and staying with it! I can't wait to hear about the progress throughout this year. Please do share with us if you want to. You did really great with your daily mileage!!
@Deeder522 , you also did great with your mileage tracked, as well with all of those Apple Watch Challenges you had!
I'm have continued to keep feeling better as the month went on, but I am definitely still dealing with the fatigue and the lack of energy. However, I am still committed to doing as much activity as possible, although some days I feel like I have gone backwards. I've began some of the outside work, but the house still is not back in order after the plumbing issues as more work needs to be done before I can put everything back. I know that I'm not all the way better yet because that has not been bothering me like it could if I was feeling more energetic. So... I'm just walking around it all, π€£ literally π€£.
