WELCOME to all walkers!

We will begin our July Walk and Workout Challenge tomorrow, so now is the time to be thinking about our new personal monthly challenge goals! Walking or any kind of workouts all count!

Summer is definitely here B) which means there may be less, or more, opportunities for walking outside depending on how hot it is getting where you live. Of course, the higher temperatures can certainly make streaming workouts or using Walk at Home DVDS inside with the AC on much more desirable!
When I think about it I realize that we so blessed that we can now use streaming services /channels like YouTube or subscriptions to give us a wide variety of walks/ workouts that are way beyond what our collections of Leslie DVDS used to be!! Although they still remain among our very favorites, indeed

This group is open to any and all walkers. Many of us use Leslie Sansone as well as other favorite instructor's walking or other workouts, as well as those great walks or hikes outside on the trails or pathways that are available to us, or a walk in our neighborhood, or indoors on the treadmill. All of these many options count toward our miles, steps, or minutes.

However you get your walk in, come on in and join us! Also whenever you are posting what you have accomplished please remember to also share any strength training 🏋️‍♀️ or other types of workouts 🧘‍♀️ that you are doing. We all benefit greatly by learning from one another and getting new ideas.

We are a happy, supportive group, and I promise that joining this walk challenge will motivate, challenge, as well as inspire you!

🤔❓Our group has been around since late 2011, but for some reason has dwindled radically over time recently. Which might have been expected, possibly, with the health challenges of recent years and whatever else has been going on personally for many members during these challenging times. Perhaps other reasons that I'm not aware of. However, if you find us please feel free to join in and see if this might be a good fit for you. Feel free to look 👀 through past monthly challenges to get any ideas if you wish 🤪.

The goals 👟📅 that you choose are your own personal goals for this month.

If you find this group in the middle of the month it doesn't matter which day of the month that you join in. Just set your goals to reflect what you hope to accomplish during the remaining days of this month. It is never too late to join in :) , you are always welcome!

I know that we are always excited to see our long time faithful walking friends o:) join us for yet another amazing month together, and we are certainly always awaiting the opportunity to welcome newcomers to this month's Walk Challenge!

And now... let us lace up those walking shoes 👟 and get our water 🥤... and walk, walk, walk into hot, sunny July 🌻 !

    @texasgardnr : I was happy to hear you're continuing your post-Covid recovery. It took me several months before I felt normal again.

    For my health tracking, I've moved mostly over to Cronometer. While its food database isn't as large as MFP it is growing and I like that I can track a lot more macros and scan foods again. So I'm mostly jumping on MFP and checking with this group.

    I spent some time going through my exercise collection and found some DVDs that I had digitized no longer worked. I lost about 4 programs. I'm not sure if I want to replace them or not. I do still have the Miracle Miles. Leslie's last real DVD collection. I'm considering restarting that. I think when Leslie retired it was a huge blow to her community and it doesn't seem like they've taken well to a new leader yet. Also, COVID happened and everyone's life was altered in 1 way or another.

    My DH & I recently switched to a new chiropractor. He's minutes from our house which works better for DH as he still has travel issues. Dr. Zack work in applied kinesiology chiropractic and clinical nutrition. You have to have an open mind going in. It's very interesting to have the testing done.
    He is also a good listener and isn't pushing. DH had a reaction to a supplement and the DR was like: OK, let's back off any supplements and look at things a different way. Quite the change from normal DR's around here. Hoping to have more success in the future.

    Hoping to hear more from other walkers this month. 😁

    Hi all, I had to spend a lot of time recovering since my surgery last year and adjusting to new meds so got out of the habit of checking in with our group. Also agree that the walk at home without Leslie isn't that good or uplifting so I tend to stick to her walks. My Leslie walk at home expires end of next month and I might do it again.

    My very diligent efforts to lose weight since last fall have had 0 results for weight abs my doctor has me trying a carb sensitive diet this summer for possible insulin resistance. He wants me to minimize sugar spikes and see if weight loss restarts so it's been hard to low carb but i started that this month following reduction in alcohol and caffeine to 0 last month. I've only had a few glasses of wine n the past 6 weeks and limited to just 1 per night on a few special occasions (wedding weekend x2, date night with friends). Coming off caffeine was hard and when I start up on coffee next week after 2 weeks off he says I can try decaf and see how my body reacts. Apparently it can trigger hypoglycemia and impact diet even though I always thought it was fine to have black coffee when you are fasting because it doesn't impact sugar 🙄

    Anyway that is my update. I sometimes walk 15k steps but other days I barely get 1k steps in. I want to try to do consistent stepping in my day and I think it helps when I start my day with a short walk of at least 15 minutes or a mile. Id like that to be 2-3 miles eventually but I'm really trying not to push too hard because I've been very tired the last few weeks with lots of commitments and no caffeine.

    Ok that's my big how I've been update-- hope everyone else is well

    @mypinkbikini So glad to hear from you again. Cutting down/out sugar & caffeine can be a big struggle but I'm confident you can take that on with the same determination you've put forward in the past. You got this!!

    Hi. I belonged to this group a long time ago (years) when I was not walking much at all. Although I stopped posting and counting calories, I did try to maintain some walking every day. But my weight is not going where I want it, and so I recently started counting calories again, and looking into groups. Over the years I have purchased many of Leslie's DVD's - many used from Amazon, and like others have mentioned, it does not seem the same without her. I cannot 'click' with any of the others. I also do workouts from other instructors, plus some outdoor walking, although walking on cement (sidewalks, malls) do cause me hip pain, so that is limited. Plus I do less if we are having days with very high humidity. I am 73, and my dear son also goes walking with me, usually twice a week, on local trails. He has had a terrible cold for a week and a half, and so today was our first time out in a bit on a trail walk. We did about 3 miles. I won't walk the trails in the woods alone.

    I'm curious if people post their total daily mileage, per their tracker, or just their exercise miles. If it's total miles, I just tallied mine, and, not counting today (yet) my July total is 23.7 miles for July, or about 2 miles per day. At present I'm trying to hit about 6000 steps a day, and slowly increase. If I don't exercise, my step count is usually only 1500-2000 steps. I'm retired and live in an apartment, so my lifestyle does not give me many steps. I'm not hitting 6000 often lately, and for me 5000 is about 2 miles. So I think I will make my goal at 60 miles for July, and see where that takes me, as a baseline, I can increase from.

    Welcome back, @hollyhock1009 !!

    I set an overall mileage goal each month. that total can change month to month based on the season for me ( I'm in Michigan ). I can walk the farm field behind the house and then have a 1-mile loop of paved trail at a park near my home as well. Sometimes my husband joins me when he's having a good day (he has ME/CFS).

    I also have a couple of other go-to exercise leaders I like. Jessica Smith has a large about of free YouTube videos available and I'm partial to her 1-mile walk-n-talk series.
    For me, it's become a struggle when Walk at Home went into a subscription-based platform. I'm glad to have a large collection of past DVD's. I'm also able to get some from my local library.

    I got out a few times on my own to get some walks in. Wildfire smoke came back down in for a few days but is clearing out again.
    Works been quiet this month which is nice and scary at the same time. #selfemployedlife 🤷🏼‍♀️😔

    I've added a digestive enzyme to my diet. Starting out with one but did notice that when I had a slice of pizza I didn't have the same painful after-effects. Spoke to the Dr that suggested them and he said what should happen but that I can't get too excited. the enzymes are there for more of a cheat day situation rather than every day. So I'll still have to work on living a dairy-free life but at least I can now have cheat days. That's better than nothing.

    I've gotten outside in the sun three times this week for walks. I always push harder outside! The mid day heat is grueling and really stressful. I'm trying not to make exercise too taxing on my body as my goal is continuous heart healthy walks and weights each week, not over training to exhaustion or running fast. Because of my heavy work schedule of two jobs I haven't been able to get to bed as early as I like sometime and I'm feeling extra tired in the morning but I'd really like to get in the habit of several gentle walks each day and I think that might be my August goal.

    Well, all the "extreme heat" that was out west is finally heading my way. This week's forecast is in the 90s for the majority of the week. So of course that means I'll be hiding inside most of the week. 🤣
    My experiment with the digestive enzymes has had decent results. Staying dairy free is probably something I'll stick to but at least I have something unhand in case I get "dairyed".

    @mypinkbikini Jessica Smith has some gentle 15 min walks on her YouTube page. Might be worth it for you to take a look. Also, my husband is gluten-free, dairy-free, and low FODMAP diet. He discovered that he really can't process carbs unless they are in the form of a vegetable, like squash or sweet potato for example. He also cut out a lot of inflammatory foods. His food intake is pretty much the exact same thing with very few deviations. It's because of this that we think his ME/CFS isn't worse and like so many others. Hopefully, the changes in your diet are enough to get things going in the right direction for you again.

    Took a little jog this morning and a walk around a favorite store today but nothing serious. Been sticking to the diet, and trying to focus on my sleep and gentle daily exercise.

    I stopped lifting this month because there was too much and I needed to drop something. But that and a few daily walks each day will be my August Goal along with maintaining my diet until traveling at the end of the month. My goal is to continue to exercise and be able to relax my diet slowly while I'm away.

    All in all I'm quite pleased with how this month is turning out and hopeful to find the long term diet specs that work for me to maintain.

    Well, this month turned out better than I thought it would for my goals.
    Work has been super slow this past month so is nice b/c it allowed me to get some projects done. It's also scary b/c my finances really can't take slow months. 😔

    This week's weather is nice and sunny so I hope to get at least 1 mile in each morning. That should be a good start to August.

    @Deeder522, Yeah, this has been a number of months, but physically I'm definitely doing much better, and now at the end of July I finally can recognize that the Covid brain fog stuff is definitely lifting- I have less of a struggle starting a task that requires using my brain like for paper work, and doing the task is getting to be like it used to be normally before getting sick. I still have things that I need to do to be caught up with things that truly got lost 'in the fog'. My plan is that in August is that I am going to tackle those post it note reminders/ lists that seemed to disappear in the fog 🤔. My house-keeping routines are coming back more! As well as my ambition to get things done is increasing. I still have a way to go with that, but I recognize it and keep being flexible about it. I'm not exhausted all the time anymore which is actually amazing!! I'm walking outside and in the house.

    Yay for you closing all of the Apple rings 👏!! Well done with all of those miles over your goal mileage!!!!

    I hope that Cronometer keeps working out for you. It's important to do what is helping you.

    That is a real treasure to have the new chiropractor (or any doctor) that actually listens and responds to the patient and not just to the text book/ protocol plan. And adjusts the plan to the person 👏🙌!!

    @mypinkbikini thank you so much for your update! It was so good to come back here and read your post!!! You have gone through a lot recovering from your surgery as well as the other health issues that have required you and your doctors to make adjustments and changes. I admire your refusal to cave in and that you refuse to give up 💐💖!! Please pop in with updates when you can. I definitely miss you here and wait to read an update!! You have done amazing in cutting the caffeine and alcohol! That is really not easy to do! Your step count is also awesome!
    Your month did turn out well!!

    @hollyhock1009, I will also be 73, next month! I am no longer counting calories/ posting food. I had met goal weight a number of years ago and had maintained for a good while before slowly stopping the tracking. I have done well with my personal monthly weigh ins and being careful, which was my goal to do. My Covid recovery has messed me up as far as causing me to lose most of my appetite for food (Even though I definitely did not lose taste/ smell) just appetite. But I'm eating enough to maintain mostly within my lower weight boundaries. Lately I've been craving more healthy foods, and also some very sugary treats. I will weigh this week for my weigh in and make sure that too many of those cookies aren't staying with me 🤪.

    About posting: If I'm walking I just post here that I walked indoors X number of days, or the number of times around the cul-de-sac for outdoors walks. Back when I was doing Leslie I used the 'miles' listed per walk and the name of the walk and minutes for other walking. And when I was able to walk a lot outside, it was posted by minutes.

    On my exercise calendar at home I write extra information such as some walking minutes, and also my step count. I don't post steps here as that is new for me this year and I'm using a very simple counter. Counting steps is to help me to increase my activity and to see how I'm doing also. In my other group that I am in I learned about the 'stand more, sit less' movement. The step counter helps me be more aware of how I am doing activity wise. I add steps by walking all the grocery store aisles, and around the house by doing silly things like taking one towel at a time from the dryer to the linen cabinet for instance. I have had to learn how not to "work smarter' in order to give myself extra work/ activity in ways like that.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    During July I walked either outdoors or inside every day except Sunday (my free/rest day). Thank you to everyone for the encouragement.
    I hope that I will be able to pop in here more often. I'll put that on another post it note LOL 😅😁👏🤪
    Well done everyone!!
