January 2025 - New Year, Better Habits

Hi guys. I’m frustrated that MFP keeps verifying that I’m human and ate my post. But I’ll try again. (Saves draft).
January 24 done celebration #6 - smiling and feeling satisfied.
I’m particularly satisfied today because my sister is visiting and we will be attending a ball.
Of course, at this point in the month I’m more motivated by keeping my streak going rather than improving my strength because I’m a sucker for a streak. I know that focusing too much on the streak leads to “all or nothing” thinking, and I certainly don’t want to quit if I break my streak.
Focusing on my word for the year STRENGTH 💪

That human thing keeps happening to me, too!
I'm continuing my month of organizing my head and assembling my tools. Just had a frustrating Apple updating experience yesterday. I was trying to download an app to my iPad mini 4, and I cannot because it needs OS 16 in order to download, and the mini 4 isn't supported for the newest version. I just got the thing in 2022, and now it's not supported. GRRRRR!! (Granted, the mini 6 was available then, but I didn't want the newest version, I like a deal rather than early adoption.). Anywayyyyy ended up buying a regular iPad (renewed, not new!) yesterday. The regular iPad is oddly cheaper than the iPad mini, so I got that one.
I found a workaround on AppleInsider.com that said if I input my Apple ID into a newer, current-OS-supported iPad, and download the app from the app store there, then when I go into my older, not-current-supported iPad, I should be able to go to past purchases, and download an older version (that does support the mini 4 hardware!) of the app, then.
Super long rabbit hole I got lost in, but it's in support of my organizing goals (getting my head space, digital space, and analog space tools all in order for a successful year!), sooooo I guess it's 'okay'.
I kinda hate iThings. Only got the iPad in 2022 so I could get an Apple ID and FaceTime with family. They're ALL (to a one) Apple people. I'm a Pixel and Windows person. Google owns me, lol.
I get you on the all or nothing streak, Tes. I had an 18+ mos 10k/day stepping streak that I broke in Sep '23, following a knee injury. I was so disheartened from the injury (and the loss of my streak, I gotta be honest!), that I let all my fitness gains slide, for about 6 mos. I finally 'gave myself a strict talking to' (heh) and got moving again. I was building a new streak, and missed a day, but instead of stressing about it, I focused on my average for the week. That's working for me.
But, MAN, I do still love streaks. And I find yours inspiring. Keep it going , but don't sabotage yourself if you do miss, It ain't worth throwing away large chunks of follow-on time. I mean, you know you're going to come back to it, eventually, right? The decisions that led to your taking up the streak are still valid, so .... don't steal time from yourself by letting everything go if a streak gets broken (speaks from regret). 🤍2 -
PS - enjoy your visit with Sarge! You two are inspiring 🤍. I was on a mixed up Hogwarts team with her during my first term (Ministry of Magic). I was kinda sad when I was assigned to a different team after that term, bc she and Christy and a few others were so inspiring.
But, there are inspiring people all over that challenge, so I've made my peace with it. *grin* (I'm in Slytherin now)2 -
Hi everyone, I keep hearing about this group from @TerriRichardson112 so I finally decided to join Nice to see some UAC friends here!
I just started taking a Great Courses class on Overthinking (I have free access through my library, yay). The instructor asks students to do certain exercises, and the first one she introduced is a brief breathing exercise. So my habit this month (starting yesterday) is to do a 1-minute breathing exercise at least once a day.
I'm using an Apple Watch app, which gives me a single buzz to breathe in and a double buzz to breathe out. I find this very helpful.
I have my daily reminders set up, and so far I have a 2-day streak3 -
Hello @takinitalloff good to see you here too1

🙋♀️ Hi Takin'! We were new around the same time in UAC, but I got knee injured, and let myself roadbloack myself 😬. Glad to see you kept going, I had a feeling you would succeed! 🤍1

10th January was my 10th anniversary on MFP. I did have a streak of 3200+ until MFP removed the newsfeed earlier this year, when it reset to zero.

THERE ARE NO QUICK FIXES OR SHORTCUTS to achieving permanent change.
REMINDERS One or two thoughts which might give heart to some of you.- Daily weight fluctuations are normal, and can be more than
2 lbs a day for no apparent reason. - A general downward trend is what we are looking for.
- Eating out can cause apparent weight gain because of high sodium levels, but usually goes quickly. Drinking extra water helps with this.
- The human body does not react instantly to what we do to it. Sometimes it can take several days to see results.
- Plateaus are a normal part of the process. The body is consolidating and adapting to your new way of eating/exercising.
- The closer you get to your goal weight, the more difficult it becomes to lose weight, as your body becomes more efficient at using what you feed it.
- When you exercise you build muscle, which takes up less space than fat, so use measurements as well as weight to assess your progress.
- Getting/Staying fit and healthy requires a lifestyle change for most people.

@takinitalloff ! Glad to have you join us!
I love your goal, I have discovered that my new Fitbit has a breath setting, I need to try it! Hooray for your two day streak !
@TerriRichardson112 , your exercise emojis are looking like the New York Marathon !
@mkksemail , thanks. Sarge and I are having a wonderful time together. Dancing last night, farmers market this morning and the ball tonight.
In fact, today I rang those dumbbells with my hair in curlers. My curtsy lunges are deep and strong for dancing. So my celebration was singing “Everybody Dance Now.” And I took a picture.

Love the pic, Tes!
What is the new Fitbit breath setting? (I've been sitting here for a couple hours, delaying my workout, trying to get my Sense to charge - it just won't charge today! Stuck at 6% 😬 )1 -
@mkksemail I don’t know if the breathing prompt is new to Fitbit, but I got a new Fitbit for Christmas, and it’s the first time I’ve been able to track my heart rate. Today, I tried the 2 minute prompt, and it was a nice easy kind of pause. Of course, now I’ll have to keep up my streak for relaxing. 😉
My new Fitbit also showed me that I’ve been underestimating my exercise because I don’t dance as intense as many country dancers, but at the ball, my Fitbit gave me 3 hours and 26 minutes of intense exercise. 🤩
January 26 - Mild recovery workout today.
Celebration- I sang “After the Ball.”

@mkksemail no my dual convections don’t heat up my kitchen anymore than the oven does it’s nice when it’s cold outside. My oven does not have teflon like so many of these other products we are not replacing them.1

Snowshoeing this morning so quiet and peaceful hoping to go again next weekend or perhaps one night after dinner.2

What is this cool thing, Inter? I'm fascinated. Also - congratulations!
The chart is from my eGym analysis. The eGym system is offered at my YMCA and it is a great addition to my workout routine. Approximately once a month I do a reassessment of my fitness status. It tracks my strength training, cardio workouts, and also does a flexibility metabolism assessment . It is a get way to track progress and target specific areas to focus on.1 -
Today I am officially no longer overweight per my BMI score! (24.9) 9 more pounds to get to my goal weight...

@interbeing Way to go! Congrats on getting below that magical 252

My breathing exercise streak is building nicely. I'm already progressing to the second stage of habit building, where I sometimes remember to do it without being prompted This quick 1-minute exercise is also proving to be a great tool for when I can't settle down to sleep.3
-
Congratulations, Inter!! 🥳2
-
@Interbeing - that’s a wonderful milestone ! Bravo !
@takinitalloff , Kudos on keeping the breath practice going. I’ve been seeing so much about the importance of improving our breathing. In fact, I read a whole book about it.
I did do my dumbbell exercises yesterday but forgot to post here.
So January 27 and 28 done. Forgot to celebrate

WTG, tes !
Back from our getaway. Feb is right around the corner, pulling all my oars together, so they'll be rowing in the same direction come next week2 -
It looks like you've all been doing well for the start of the year.👏
My weight has gone up a bit. But, it was to be expected, due to two weeks of good food in Italy, followed by a birthday meal and a voucher meal and exhaustion.🥳
I got some good proper sleep this week and feel that I'm ready to face reality again.😴
I've been doing some bouts of mini exercise and getting out for even just a short walk each day.💪😁🤜
I'm eating plenty of vegetables and some fruit as well. I have eaten all the chocolate gifts (thankfully, not much) and have got no more sweet things in the house. It's water or tea all the way, with the occasional coffee and a couple of glasses of wine now and again.🤗
I've already stepped more this month than January 2024.👊
Things can only be better than last year!👆
Let's make 2025 a great one!💃1 -
This group is a great way to celebrate our successes. Here’s a list of ways to celebrate.
B.J. Fogg recommends a celebration reset when you are feeling overwhelmed.

I went back to the first page of comments and will edit my previous post with some celebration emojis.

@BodyTalking , I really think celebrating success is so important, and I often just concentrate on getting something done and skip the celebration, so I’ve been trying to remember to celebrate !
A trip to Italy sounds like a great excuse to gain a few pounds.
@mkksemail , pulling all oars - I love that expression!
Almost done with my January challenge!

What weight dumbbell are you up to, Tes? Could you share your routine, again?1 -
I made it! I've been doing brief breathing exercises every day, sometimes with the help of the Apple Watch and sometimes without. This practice is making such a big difference in my life already that I have zero doubt that I will continue with the breathing.
Interestingly, my Heart Rate Variability has been above 50 twice this week, for the first time since September 2023 when I started tracking it. I've been trying to increase my HRV all this time, with very slow progress. Maybe this will be the ticket!
I am going to add a second new habit for February, even though I just joined this group a week ago. Thank you all for inspiring me to make a more concerted habit-building effort See you all next month.1
