    D.I.S.C.

I was cleaning my office as I transition from a business professional to a retired G-Ma and ran across a DISC test that I took a few years ago. I wondered how DISC might apply to weight loss so I dug in a bit.

Discos Qué Son, Evaluación y Beneficios - De-Agua

The D.I.S.C. test is a personality assessment tool that categorizes people into four primary personality traits—Dominance (D), Influence (I), Steadiness (S), and Conscientiousness (C). While it's not specifically designed for weight loss, the principles of the D.I.S.C. assessment can be adapted to help tailor weight loss methods based on individual personalities and how they might respond to different approaches.

Here’s how you can apply the D.I.S.C. test to weight loss methods, by understanding how each personality type might approach dieting, exercise, and lifestyle changes:

    1. Dominance (D) – The Results-Oriented Go-Getter

    • Personality Traits: Individuals with a Dominant personality are assertive, competitive, and focused on results. They are goal-driven and tend to thrive when they have clear, measurable objectives.
    • Weight Loss Approach:
      • Goal: Quick and visible results.
      • Motivation: Strong desire to achieve and win.
      • Strategy: D types may respond well to intense workouts (e.g., HIIT, strength training) and structured, results-driven diets (e.g., low-carb or intermittent fasting), especially if they can track their progress and see fast changes.
      • Challenges: D types may lose interest in weight loss methods that feel slow or unstructured. They may also be less likely to stick with methods that don't show immediate progress.

    2. Influence (I) – The Social and Motivated Enthusiast

    • Personality Traits: Influential individuals are outgoing, sociable, and thrive on positive reinforcement and encouragement. They enjoy being part of a group and are motivated by external factors like praise or support.
    • Weight Loss Approach:
      • Goal: Fun, social, and engaging methods.
      • Motivation: Social interaction, rewards, and positive reinforcement.
      • Strategy: I types may do best with group workoutsfitness classes, or challenges where they can engage with others (e.g., yoga, dance classes, group runs). They also tend to be more consistent when they have a support system.
      • Challenges: I types may struggle with solitary or overly restrictive diets that feel isolating. They also tend to need a lot of external encouragement to stay on track.

    3. Steadiness (S) – The Supportive and Consistent Achiever

    • Personality Traits: Steady individuals are calm, patient, and dependable. They value stability, comfort, and consistency in their routines. They tend to be empathetic and supportive of others.
    • Weight Loss Approach:
      • Goal: Sustainable, comfortable, and gradual progress.
      • Motivation: Consistency, habit formation, and steady improvement.
      • Strategy: S types may do best with gentle, sustainable exercise (e.g., walking, swimming, low-impact cardio) and a balanced, flexible diet that doesn’t require drastic changes. They are likely to enjoy slow, steady progress rather than rapid results.
      • Challenges: S types may find it difficult to make sudden, dramatic changes or take on highly demanding programs. They may also resist programs that feel too rigid or extreme.

    4. Conscientiousness (C) – The Detail-Oriented Planner

    • Personality Traits: Conscientious individuals are precise, organized, and detail-oriented. They value accuracy, structure, and having a clear plan. They are analytical and often seek expert opinions and data.
    • Weight Loss Approach:
      • Goal: Structured, detailed, and scientifically-backed methods.
      • Motivation: Knowledge, precision, and measurable data.
      • Strategy: C types may prefer a well-researched diet plan (e.g., tracking macros, calorie counting) and evidence-based exercise routines. They appreciate detailed programs where every step is planned out and they can track their progress with precision (e.g., tracking apps, detailed workout routines).
      • Challenges: C types may struggle with flexibility or ambiguity in a weight loss program. They may become frustrated if a plan lacks clear guidelines or doesn't have a scientific basis.

How to Use the D.I.S.C. Test for Weight Loss Success

By understanding your D.I.S.C. personality type, you can customize your weight loss approach to be more effective and enjoyable:

    1. Dominance (D): If you’re a D, focus on setting clear, challenging goals, tracking progress, and choosing intense, time-efficient workouts like HIIT. Keep your diet structured and results-driven, and don’t be afraid to make bold changes.
    2. Influence (I): If you’re an I, choose a weight loss plan that is socially engaging and offers external motivation. Group workouts, fitness classes, or finding a workout buddy can keep you on track. Use positive reinforcement to stay motivated and avoid restrictive diets.
    3. Steadiness (S): If you're an S, look for a program that allows for steady, gradual changes. Focus on building sustainable habits and routines that won't overwhelm you. Choose exercises that are comfortable and low-impact, and opt for a balanced, flexible approach to food.
    4. Conscientiousness (C): If you're a C, structure is your friend. Choose a data-driven approach to weight loss that includes detailed tracking of food, exercise, and progress. Consider working with a nutritionist or trainer who can help you build a personalized plan based on scientific evidence.

    Conclusion

While the D.I.S.C. test isn’t specifically designed for weight loss, understanding your personality can help you choose a method that aligns with your natural preferences and tendencies. The right approach for weight loss isn’t one-size-fits-all—what works best for you depends on your personality, lifestyle, and what motivates you.

By aligning your weight loss method with your D.I.S.C. personality type, you can enhance your likelihood of success, stay motivated, and make the process more enjoyable and sustainable.

    Questions:

Have you ever taken the D.I.S.C test?
If yes, do you think your personality type(s) as discovered could aid or change your approach to weight loss.

    I’m a “S” (Steadiness) “C” (Conscientiousness)

…I did take this test a few years ago but I suspect not much has changed….it totally makes sense for me and for the most part what I am currently doing. I think I need to focus on the gradual changes and then sticking with them long enough to see the results. Data Driven is spot on, but sometimes, I just get tired of all the details…..

I have never taken this particular test, but I have taken other tests that try to sort people into personality traits. I can’t say I find them very helpful – I don’t like to be pigeon-holed.

We did the DISC profiles at work last year and it was fascinating. The most interesting thing was an exercise the facilitator did where she giouped us into our strongest profile then in our groups, discussed our reaction to scenario: you love your car. It’s your baby. And you lend your car to a good friend and they return it completely trashed and dirty, with no explanation (you are away when they return it). How to do feel? What do you do? Would you lend it again?
In our groups we all tended to have the same reaction… but when we shared that with the other groups we were so surprised at the variations! Ds were angry, Cs were disappointed, S’s were worried about the person. I’s were curious. Couldn’t have been a better way to teach a team how different people / personalities interpret and react to the same scenario!

PS - I’m a strong C and I definitely love data and tracking and rules and plans and that also holds true when it comes to health and diet! But DiSC helps to realize that’s not for everyone. Gotta find what works for you 😊

🌸 Never took the test… Never heard about this before… But just reading it I can assure you I’m a Type I (Influence):

🌸 2. Influence (I) – The Social and Motivated Enthusiast

🌸 By understanding your D.I.S.C. personality type you can customize your weight loss approach to be more effective and enjoyable:

🌸 Influence (I): If you’re an I, choose a weight loss plan that is socially engaging and offers external motivation. Group workouts, fitness classes, or finding a workout buddy can keep you on track. Use positive reinforcement to stay motivated and avoid restrictive diets.

🌸do you think your personality type(s) as discovered could aid or change your approach to weight loss?

Yes I do think so!! I always tried different things in my life and it would never work. If I would’ve figured this out earlier on think it would’ve helped me a great deal. Now as an adult i think i finally realized what works for me… I’m gonna have to read more in this!!

    thank you!!!

Exercice: Yes, walking, 30 minutes, 5000 steps. Didn't do my Pilates class after a pretty bad night.

    Calories: Yes, stayed under budget

    Tracking: Yes, logged everything

    Pass Days: 1

Personality Type tests: I think I have, at the grand old age of almost 74, and a lot of attempts at weightloss, got to know myself well enough to know what does and what doesn't work for me. Regular habits, structure, attainable and measurable goals, results, bit of encouragement, steady and slow plan, progress…

a pass day again but not too bad. Still resting up but I can see improvement. I have taken those test in varying forms many many times over the years. I can't remember what they said altho the questions always seemed to try to be the same ones over and over again asked slightly differently to see how you answered. I always put different answers on the same ones so the tests probably were not accurate.

@itladyee … Although I must admit that my employer had a personality test d'jour, or so it seemed to me, I don't ever remember the DISC test. I'm going to see if I can find it online and check it out.

    2. Did I stay within my calorie budget for the day? Sure did!
    3. Did I keep track of all the calories I ate or drank? Did that too!
    4. Pass days (3+ is fine if you reach the max): Holding at 8 I think…

@itladyee… great opener and pretty cool to see how you related it to our weight loss journey. I have never heard of the D.I.S.C. test before. I am really not sure where I would land. Likely somewhere in the middle of influence and conscientiousness. I will pick influence as it is much easier to spell… lol

I know how, it will work, and it will absolutely be worth it!!

Thank you for your responses and thoughts on using what might be revealed in a personality test to shape your health plan.

I enjoy personality test. While I know myself pretty well, I always feel there's something else that I can learn about, improve or simply explore a new area of thought. While mostly S & C for me… I do see some "D" traits that do apply to me…maybe even more than "S".

@brittawyatt ~ I love that exercise! It's very interesting how the different personalities reacted. I can't imagine just being "curious". I would have strayed from my "S" and would have been angry and disappointed. I am pretty particular about my car!! I think that exercise was a a great lesson. We did some similar but it was in a Global Communications class. We were all different "countries". Each county had a "commodity", paper, glue, scissors, markers etc and we had to make "deals" with others to accomplish our tasks. It got very heated at times!!

@SummerSkier 😅 you are right about the multiple questions asking the same thing in a slightly different way.

@HollyStormCloud ~ good for you eating your veggies EVERY day!! 🙃

@deskjockey925 ~ report back your thoughts if you find it and take it.

    @Alsison ~ 😀

I have never heard of this assessment system but from reading your descriptions I feel certain that definitely fall under the S in both personality traits and my approach to weight loss. Thank you for sharing this information @itladyee !

I am posting a day late AGAIN! Each and every day just seems to fly past! But I met all three requirements, and am still at 3 pass days used.
