A few weeks ago, a request came in on one of the weekly Group Challenges by a member who shared that she needed assistance with Meal Planning. I've found a terrific article which gives some great guidance and support in this area of Nutrition. Here's the link for the article:

The Beginner's Guide to Meal Planning: Meal Prep 101 | The Kitchn

This week's challenge is to work on your meal prep planning in advance of the week, share a few tips each day with the group and then discuss how your progress worked for you. Make sure to give us the good, the bad and the ugly because your missteps could assist someone else with their meal planning. Remember, sharing is caring.

I start my meal planning with my grocery planning. We're all greatly busy with our daily work schedules, families, kid's activities, especially now that it's back-to-school time, so good planning can make or break your nutrition for each week. Keep a running list, either on the fridge or on your phone…I'll be honest, I even just go to the Kroger website and keep my cart running until time to schedule either a grocery delivery or free pickup. That way, I've planning most of my breakfasts, lunches and dinners in advance and having my daily plans made in advance keeps me away from the drive-thrus or from ordering out.

My best advise…ALWAYS have a plan B, because as sure as you plan to leave work, head home and cook, you'll be asked to work late or something else unexpected will occur. If you have a plan B put aside, there's no guess work and you're prepared for life's happenings.

Looking forward to a good discussion this week. Let me get things started…

  • What's your go-to choice for lunches during the week?
  • Do you plan for something leftover to reheat, plans salads or like to have sandwiches for work lunches?
  • What's your family's favorite meal? Is it a quick fix or does it require lots of cook time?
  • When you can't keep your planned dinner meal, what's one meal you can throw together, where you always have those supplies on hand?
  • If your plans changes and you have to hit a drive-thru or order out, what are two restaurants and meals you can get that are nutrition-conscious?
  • In thinking about meal prep, what's your biggest planning disaster and how did you recover from it?
  • Why is it so hard to plan ahead? Is time the problem, things that pop-up or is it just lack of interest?

See you in the chat thread!

Jessica 😁

I typically eat the same 2 or 3 breakfasts and lunches. It's just dinner that has a bigger option to change. My husband typically does the dinner cooking (except I tend to cook dinner on the weekends). I also try to keep a snack on hand at work, in case I do get hungry and that sometimes helps me not go hunting for candy or treats around the office!

I've got a variety of 40 single serving meals in the freezer for lunches to take to work. I've got black bean soup, oatmeal, or cottage cheese for breakfasts. Dinner is usually just veggies and fruit. For snacks, I've got nuts, raw veggies, yogurt, and fruit.
