NEHEMIAH AND THE WALLS OF JERUSALEM
While I was in Susa the capitol,.....Hanani, one of my brothers, and some men from Judah came; and I asked them concerning the Jews who had escaped and had survived the captivity, and about Jerusalem. And they said no to me, "The remnant there in the province who survived the captivity are in great distress and reproach, and the wall of Jerusalem is broken down and its gates are burned with fire." Now it came about when I heard these words, I sat down and wept and mourned for days; and I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven. Nehemiah 1:1-4
Nehemiah records the events which took place as Jerusalem's walls were repaired. Fortified walls were necessary not only to guard the perimeter of the great city, but also to demonstrate the renewed pride and unity of the citizens.
Although Nehemiah was in Susa, the Persian capital, which was 600 miles away, he couldn't forget either his beloved city or its people. So, he poured out heartfelt prayers to the Lord, seeking His wisdom for this great renovation project. And God's reply caused him to mourn, fast, and weep, as the solution to Israel's problem crystallized: "We have sinned against Thee; I and my father's house have sinned' " (Nehemiah 1:6)
Then Nehemiah requested that King Artaxerxes send him to Judah that he might rebuild the walls. And all of Nehemiah's time of fasting and prayer were answered as the king wrote letters of safe passage for himto all "the governors of the provinces beyond the River" (Nehemiah 2:7). In god's timing Nehemiah shared his plan with the remnant of Israel.
PRAYER----Lord, let me learn from Nehemiah's example. Let me seek Your will through prayer and study, never losing sight of Your Son.
Have a blessed day everyone and don't forget to pray throughout the day today.:happy:
