The Gathering at the Water Gate
And all the people gathered...at the square and they asked Ezra the scribe to bring the book of law of Moses which the Lord had given to Israel. Then Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly....on the first day of the seventh month. And he read from it before the square....and all the people were attentive to the book of the law. Nehemiah 8:1-3
Through inspired teamwork, Nehemiah and the remnant of Israel finished rebuilding the wall in only 52 days (Nehemiah 6:15). Even their enemies lost the will to fight, recognizing this accomplishment as coming from the hand of Israel's God. Four times Sanballat and Greshem sent messages to Nehemiah, hoping to drag him away from finishing his task. And each time Nehemiah responded by saying " 'I am doing a great work and I cannot come down' " (Nehemiah 6:3). Sanballat accused Nehemiah of appointing prophets to proclaim that a king was in Judah.
Still, Nehemiah, refused to become agitated or frightened. Instead, he relied on God's strength. God put it in his heart "to assemble the nobles, the officials, and the people to be enrolled by genealogies. Then I found the book of the genealogy of those who came up first....from the captivity of the exiles whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, who returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his city" (Nehemiah 7:5-6). They searched fro records prior to the captivity, to prove their lineage and family ties, but none could be found. In response, the people grieved.
PRAYER----Lord, let Nehemiah be an example of trust for me.
