How to run an unprepared 50k and win

At least find out that you are running it a day before the race.... at least two days would be even better.
Step two: do not research the run since this will just freak you out even more. Just show up and have fun.
Step three: taper off your runs as soon as you find out that you are running it.
Note: to be really unprepared, you should just transition from running 5ks and halves to a 50k
Step four: Go wtf when you find out that your race is a true hike / trail run that requires climbing as well.
Step five: if you are unprepared, you may run an additional 4 miles if you don't pay attention to directions.
Step 6: Finish the race and win overall female (if you are female... sorry dudes, I didn't win overall male since I'm not male).
Step 7: Go wtf, did I really just win a 50k race while getting lost and running 4 additional miles.

That's beyond awesome.
Congrats!0 -
Thanks sweetie! I'm still going to myself "wtf did I just do!". .. lol... I know tomorrow morning I won't be whipping out 7.5 minute miles as I normally do.0

You're amazing. That's pretty funny too. I'm trying to figure out how this conversation went. "Want to do a 50k run tomorrow?" ... "Sure, why not?"
Great work. Obviously you couldn't handle 55k but it's great that you were so unprepared for this one. That makes it work so much better. The extra 4 miles was because The people that were prepared needed a fighting chance.0 -
Amazing! Congratulations!0

Well it all started because my husband enjoys bragging how fast I am... So his friend called and asked him on Thursday if I'd do this 50k since it would be cool knowing someone who ran it. So my husband wakes me up all excited (I was half dazed...) so I had to sayyes I'd do it. My husband isn't a runner so he doesn't understand about preparation. So I did it...and I had to finish it too... lol. The funny thing about it too is if he had said it was a 5k, I'd have said no since I wasn't prepared.0

I love this!
Amazing performance even without the additional 4 mile handicap, lack of prior marathon racing experience and two day notice.
You are an inspiration to us all0 -
Congratulations! That is funny/great.0

You are so awesome! Congratulations on your win!0

Thanks guys! I just hope that no other friends after reading this in the toledo road runners paper, and possibly the blade, calls my husband and say, "There is a 100k tomorrow, your wife should totally do it!"0

Wow! that is impressive. I could not do it, but it is nice to see it is possible! :drinker:0

Great that you have a supportive HB too!0

Thanks Coor! And my husband and mom in law are amazing. I'm not American so my other family lives in Jamaica. But every event (whether it be running and possibly martial arts), they'd come along with me. I told my husband that he should take his mom to do something since I won't be back for a while and they said they'd stay there and wait for me. They are used to waiting out 5ks which is over in about 20 mins not an ultra... but they still waited.0

This made me LOL!! awe inspiring results!!0 -
Lol, nothing like a friend saying "hey did I tell you about this race?" and you can now say "Oh yah, I won that one. BOOYA!"
That is awesome, congrats!!!0 -

I was just going to ask if we should expect such stellar results from you on a 50 or 100-miler, say, next weekend?!
In all seriousness, you are a super star! Great job & congrats on the WIN!! I'm still trying to wrap myself around potentially registering for a 50k next summer - my goal is simply to finish without feeling like I want to die, never in a million years could I WIN one. Amazing!0 -
Thanks guys! And it is also a female course record. So if I do decide to do it next year (and prepare), I at least know I can shave off 30 mins from my time simply by paying attention to the directions :-)...0

This is not a story I share. LOL0

Maybe you should market that running plan. That is tremendous...an incredible success.0

Great job!!! I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner0

Love it! The best part is not that you won (okay, maybe it is ) but that you decided "what the hell, I'll do it" rather than "I'm not sure I can; I've never done that before."
Your story reminds me a bit of Emily Harrison, who ran her first 50 miler last November at the JFK50 and came in 2nd, earning her an entry into the Western States 100. She then went out and finished in the top ten women at WS. And she had the benefit of dating McMillan running's ultramarathon coach! I can only IMAGINE what would happen if you actually had some training under your belt!0
