Daily Challenge 26/09/2013--New food day...

Today I challenge you all to eat a new food from the produce aisle.

Walk to your store if you can, tell the produce person what you like, and ask them what they suggest, then ask them how to pick a good'un.

I need to do this more often because I am a picky eater. Plus, I don't want to get scurvy.

Expound on your feelings about our fiber filled friends below...

Well, this is a tough one for me, since I tend to stick to what I like ... I love veggies: zucchini, eggplant, broccoli, cauliflower... trying something new is really hard for me

Walking 4.5 miles to get to the grocery is probably out of the question. I might make it there, but back would be another issue. This probably isn't going to happen today, however I will add it to the list for the next shopping trip. I'm sure there is something odd that I've never tried hiding in the veggie section.

Now, I have never tried eggplant, but I have an aversion to eating things that are colored cordovan. Reminds me of uniform boots. This may stay on the list. IF-- Ignaura shares a good recipe... (Hmmm, may have to work on my subtlety.)

I have an issue with blue drinks LOL Can't drink anything blue or green, so I feel you :P

We had eggplant last night. The boyfriend doesn't really like so I try to disguise it a little with different veggies. I did some kind of a stir fry with eggplant, zucchini, cauliflower.. coconut oil, salt, pepper and garlic powder... You can also add mushrooms <3 It's very tasty Cut the eggplant in small cubes and you won't even realize it's there.

My friend's hubby doesn't eat a lot of veggies, but if you sneak them in he usually doesn't notice. Case in point was, my friend makes these amazing little pizzas where the 'crust' is slices of eggplant. She had made them 3 times before he found out what the crust was, and he was raving about them the first two times. Once he found out what they had in them... yup, wouldn't eat them anymore. But... it made for YUMMY snacks. Turkey pepperoni, sauce, cheese, I think she brushed the bottoms with a little olive oil but am not sure. And then just bake til the cheese is all bubbly.

I will have to defer this challenge to Saturday, because that is the next time I am doing groceries :) This is also provided I can find a veggie or a fruit that I have never eaten before at my local stores, sometimes there is not that much selection for the adventurous.
  • i tried spaghetti squash the other night. it wouldn't get uncrunchy. the taste seemed ok, but i didn't like the texture. anybody have any fixes?

The benefit of the challenge was not in the actual cooking and eating of a new food, but in the opening up ourselves to the possibilities of the new.

Availability, affordability, and possibly your cooking ability might limit your opportunities to participate in this challenge exactly as written--but you can still revisit old healthy foods that you might have neglected, or a cooking method you may not have tried.

One of the reasons I hated vegetables was because growing up my folks didn't know how to cook them.

They put the Christmas Dinner carrots on to boil on Easter Sunday, and anything less than mush was considered "raw".

    But times have changed.

    I have a steamer. I have a wok.

Veggies rule okay, they have colour, flavor, and crunch--now that they don't get boiled to grey.

I cut the spaghetti squash in half, hollow out the seeds, put salt and pepper, and a little bit of butter/ margarine basted on top. Then I put it in the oven in a covered casserole dish, skin side out. Check it with a fork after at least half an hour. It can take up to an hour to cook depending on the size. Like a potato if the fork slides in and out of the skin with ease its cooked. Flip it over and enjoy.

We love spaghetti squash. You can cook in the oven like Pixy suggests, or if you want it to cook faster, we tend to steam it in the microwave.

Cut squash in half lengthwise. Remove seeds with a spoon. Place cut side down in a glass 9X9 square baking pan. Pour in about a cup of water. Cover with saran or other type plastic wrap. Microwave on high starting at 8 minutes. Press on the skin when finished. If it indents, the squash is cooked, if it doesn't indent easily, put it back in for 2 to 4 more minutes. Check it fairly often.

Once cooked, allow to sit for a couple minutes to allow steam to subside then peal back plastic wrap and remove squash half from the remaining water. You should be able to use a fork to easily remove the strands from the skin.

We love to use it with a marinara type spaghetti sauce. YUM.

I tried acorn squash for the first time this weekend, and totally fell in love with it! I am now going to try every squash in my grocery store! Can't believe that I liked it that much! Trying new fruits and veggies is an awesome thing

Try butternut next. It's the long, funny shaped orange one. SO tasty. Also hubbard is good. ...ok, as a longtime squash lover, I could recommend them all lol. They freeze well cooked or from raw, also, which is handy.

My purchase was a plantain, going to try cooking it up tomorrow. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to cook said plantain?
