How important is the long run the week before a HM?

So I have 2 long runs left before my 3rd half marathon on Oct 13. I've been nervous about this one because I gave myself a rather lofty goal given all my training limitations (I run slower than my target pace a lot to accommodate a jogging stroller).

Anyway for my long run on Sunday I plan 13-15 miles since I'll be stroller free. October 6th is a problem though. I'll be away with my daughter and probably only able to manage 5 miles. Is this ok the week before my race?

The week before your race is taper time. However, the final long run before tapering is pretty important, although I find the long run before that is the most important. If you can, try and get your long run in the day before your scheduled long run day. Then you get to have 1 extra taper day. One other option is to do your long run the day after your scheduled long run day, even though that creeps into taper week. Since your body has been through 2 other HM's already, the 1 day less of taper shouldn't really affect your race performance. Have a great race!
  • Given the volume of training you've done, I wouldn't worry about the long run so much the week before. Technically, you should be tapering as Daj said. The training you've done is cumulative, I don't think the short one the week before will hurt you at all. Also keep in mind that you've done a majority of your miles with a stroller, which is adding additional benefits due to the additional effort. You're going to feel like you're hauling *kitten* for the actual race. You'll be great.

Food for thought - no single run will do much to improve your running performance but any one single run, or even a fraction of a second mishap, can result in the runner being "the fittest spectator at the race".

My calendar has me running 13 this Sunday and 8 on the 6th. This for a half on the 12th (my first). I would imagine just getting some reasonable work in would be fine.

    Have fun!
