Do you lift weights?

I hate cardio. I love running, but hate cardio (meaning the elliptical, treadmill, zumba, etc etc kind of cardio). So I lift heavy weights (absolutely love it) and run every other day. Here on MFP I've found that not many people who have to lose a lot of weight actually lift weights... do any of you lifts?

Yup, I've been doing weights for something like 4 weeks now. I do 30 minutes 3-4 times a week. I find 'em pretty hard but I am enjoying it :D

Lately, no. But I have been trying to get back in the swing of lifting. Givens is a lifting Demi-god, an inspiration, check out some of his posts. Great example for his boys.

I believe heavy lifting is important for any and all of us. When we do cardio we burn x calories during the cardio session and then it drops quickly after we stop. With lifting we build muscle, generally increasing our metabolism, and burning more calories all day. In what we are trying to do, that is a big win!

Don't get me wrong, cardio is very important too for general health, but long term bang for the buck calorie burn goes to lifting.

Move to get faster, lift heavy to get stronger. If you eat the right things at a level to support these activities, but not way over that level, both will help you to burn more fat.

Basically, I agree with dward's sentiments, except for my demi-god status. I'm borderline-intermediate at best :-) But hey, if I can be an inspiration, then God be praised.

I started resistance training on land at the beginning of September. But I started in the water in August, using floaty dumbbells.

After two months I feel stronger and I can just start to see things slowly firming up under the fat mass.

But I don't mind cardio, and much of what I do in the gym, is still hamster-wheely and aerobic in nature.

(And yeah...mdgivens is a MACHINE! ...and very wise.)

On first glance, I thought this thread was going to have a "Do you even lift bro?" theme

I used to do stronglifts 5x5 at the gym in my office. But then my office moved and no gym :<

I just joined a gym with my sister-in-law this week. They have a women's room that has weight machines, so we're going to start off small and do a full circuit in there a few times a week after we do our cardio. Someday I hope to travel to the other weight sections (our gym has three giant weight rooms) and attempt free weights, but we'll see. At the moment I'm far too intimidated.

When my membership is active (soon now... end Nov), I do the machine circuits. Treadmill, circuit, swimming. repeat
I do enjoy it but I don't push it that hard.

It can be really intimidating. It took me almost year to feel confident enough to even go to the gym
