Lighting Up The Night

I'm trying to come up with the best outfit and/or place for running outside this winter. Most of my runs so far; I just started running in May; have been on my local paved rail-to-trail path. While it's safer as far as cars, bikes are a lot quieter than cars, and I worry about myself and my dog as we've been surprised by them a number of times.

Currently what I've been wearing is a lighted vest backward so that my back is lit up, a head lamp around my neck facing forward but down, and a LED collar on my dog. My dog is small, about 18 lbs, and brown and completely invisible at night. I'd really like to get more light on him as I worry about bikes seeing me and not him and taking him out, despite the fact that he's never more than a foot and a half from my side at any time during the run. So I'm planning to find an LED leash as soon as possible.

I'd like to wear the headlamp around my head where it was designed to go, but it keeps tapping down onto my glasses with each step and the noise and light bonking of my nose is really annoying.

Any ideas on a better way of lighting us up? Are there headlamps that might stay put better or flashlights designed to go around the neck? Are there vests that light up on both sides so that I don't have to wear mine backwards? Is there anything lightweight that I can put on my dog or adapt to put on my dog that will light him up without adding too much weight or make him too hot? He doesn't need a dog coat even on the coldest days in my area as long as we're running.

Any ideas appreciated.

there are running hats and gloves that have LED lights built in to them.

Also for dogs there are lights that can attach to the collar. I have a little red bone for my 20 pounder and she's gotten used to it. Light up leash is a great idea.

Get the headlamp that clips onto a hat. No slippage.

You can get little flashers to place on his collar.

I just wear the headlamp over a hat -- that keeps it in place. As it gets cooler, you might consider a brooks nightlife jacket -- they are VERY visible, and excellent jackets.

A friend of mine sometimes wears these on his arms and ankles and he is VERY visible!

I've also seen some lights on dog leashes...not exactly sure how that works but it makes it much clearer that you have a dog, rather than some random glowy thing near your feet.

I love my knuck-lights for running in the dark. They illuminate about a 20' area around you and are visible to others.

I got the red one of these from RoadId. Makes me visible, lights up the ground just enough, clips anywhere, stays put. It's light and has two options: blinking and steady light, depending on how you install the batteries.

This is genius! I just ordered one. I do 90% of my running in the dark. Thanks for the link.
