Starving, anyone?

It seems like there are times that I do get VERY hungry! I know that I am under a lot of stress, due to school and finances. I am trying hard not to stress eat and make sure that it's real hunger. I had been really bad and was drinking diet soda, so I gave it up, just yesterday. I know, no fizzy stuff or caffeine, so please no lectures, as I've given it up. Anyhow, I am drinking more water now and still getting hungry. I don't eat many carbs, as they do affect my weight loss. I try to keep them under 70 a day, so I know it's not my blood sugar crashing (there were times that I felt it was and I would eat and feel better). My doctor tested my a1c, as I was on diabetes medications prior to my VSG, and it is great. She doesn't feel that I'm having low blood sugar. I really should dig around for my glucose meter, though. I am trying to eat healthy, like veggies, cheese, or tuna salad (100 calorie packs) when I get like that. I don't know what else to do. I just ate a cheese stick three hours ago and I'm starving again! What?!? I get an average of 800 - 900 calories a day in, as I am not really able to do any exercise but chair ones. I am praying that when I get a knee brace that I will be able to ride my recumbant bicycle and get more calories in! I am only eight months out and my bariatric surgical team never gave me any calorie recommendations. All I was told was to get in at least 80 grams of protein and stay under 10 mg of fat and 10 mg of sugar per item I eat. I'm really only to eat three meals a day, and drink two glasses of milk inbetween meals. I am not a milk drinker, so I was told cheesesticks are okay to replace the milk. Besides that, what can I do?

    Hey Tina,

I've been doing an experiment. I 've been getting cravings at night (not as bad as before the sleeve but very similar) and noticed on those days, I hadn't gotten around to a protein shake. On the days I start with a protein shake, I don't seem to care as much about eating. It's really noticeable.

Also if I have too many carbs, it still triggers carbs for me too; but since you're limiting your sugar, this isn't a factor.

So if you aren't already, you could try that (Having a protein shake in the morning) and see if it works for you. I usually get at least two scoops (a double dose) in one cup of liquid. My protein shake is yummy: ON Gold Standard - Chocolate (the vanilla isn't as good).

And I'm alergic to dairy, so I use Almond Breeze almond milk, which is yummy in itself.

I hope you find a resolution! Sounds like you're doing great.

Yes, I get hungry. I eat low carb too and agree on days I get more protein I am fuller, especially if I start the day that way. I really try and fill up on vegetables.......lots of them. For snacks and with meals.

At 185 lbs lost your doing great!

I don't want to start anything negative here, but I find when I drink plain tap water, I am hungrier than if I drink zero calorie, zero sodium, zero carb, flavored water. I am assuming it's something to do with the flavor. At work, I drink somewhere between 28-56 ounces of just plain tap water and by the time I get home at night I'm so very ready to eat. However, on the rare times I've brought in my flavored water, I can drink the same amount and be mildly interested in eating when I get home. My flavored water is Sparkling Ice and it's carbonated but zero everything with some added B vitamins thrown in. I sip a bit and then shake the carbonation out of it as my tummy doesn't like the carbonation. Anyway, I share this thinking it might be the same with you? :ohwell:
