My Stronglifts Check list

I know you're probably all thinking 'Just do it already!' but I'm going with the 'Failing to plan is planning to fail' adage, and trying to get myself organised.
1) read up on SL 5x5 CHECK - been on website, downloaded app, in this group etc.
2) get the go ahead from the postnatal physios at the hospital. (Not sure what to do if they say no!)
3) talk to the staff at the crèche at the gym. I want to feed baby and leave him asleep there, if possible, as I'm no good at pumping milk. I need to know they wouldn't just leave him to cry. The crèche is only open in the morning, so my year of maternity leave is my one chance to use it.
4) look at gym membership options.
5) find a PT willing to JUST work on form with me.
6) Do it!
2) worries me because when I tried to mention I wanted to do strength training for bone health in older age the physio just said running was better and didn't actually comment on the lifting option

How old is baby?
The only thing I'd be concerned about post partum is how long the elevated levels of relaxin hang around, so that you are aware of your range of movement and don't over-extend anything.
Hope it goes well!0 -
Oo, I'm excited for you, Oishii!
I was trying to remember how long it's been since you've had the baby as well, but you'll have to refresh my memory.
If the postnatal physios give you the go-ahead for exercise in general, then I don't think they would really be able to differentiate between different forms of exercise. (This is just my non-professional opinion, of course.) Like, if they clear you for running I don't know why they wouldn't clear you for other kinds of exercise. Also if they commented that running was better than weight-lifting that just shows me that they aren't necessarily experts on the exercise side of things. So I would take their advice with a grain of salt and then get another opinion if you need to. My understanding back from when I had babies was that once I was cleared for exercise, it was generally any kind of exercise.
lwoodroff has a good point about not over-extending, too.
Again, excited for you!0 -
Hey Oishi, I just started stronglifts again a couple weeks ago, when the baby was about 11 wks old. I could have started sooner, but didn't have gym membership until then.
I had a regular delivery and I was cleared to start working out pretty much when I felt up to it. I started walking and jogging about 2 weeks postpartum.
I think your little guy is around 8 wks or so? I would say as long as you didn't have C-section you should be good to go!!!!
And like Janelle said, if they cleared you to run, you should be fine to lift!0 -

What the leaflets said was as long as you're breastfeeding, but as I breastfed DS1 until he was 3.5, I call BS :P0 -

Got the go ahead! Told to wait until 12 weeks, so that gives me a deadline to sort out everything else. Told to build up slowly and watch out especially with OHP as that is where the relaxin is apparently 'worst'.
Called the leisure centre and I can pop and see the crèche any time it's open. Fingers crossed DS is as chilled there as he was at postnatal exercise this morning: almost an hour of happy smiling at everything while I did the class. :happy:0 -

Very productive trip to the leisure centre! The crèche is lovely and willing to break the rules to accomodate my babywearing. Found a nice PT (although he would start me in the Smith Machine) who hates machines and loves strong women  And I get a membership discount from work. So, yay!0 -
tell him you are NOT using the smith machine, you want to start with the barbell. then stamp your foot for emphasis0

He said it was a 3D Smith machine and only prevented lateral movement. How do I counter that?0 -
"I'm wanting to follow this particular programme that uses barbells. I believe it will be better to learn the proper movements and not unlearn how the smith machine affects them."
oh, and you are paying him aren't you? you are the client, you call the shots!0 -

A YEAR? Totally jealous! Good luck with your training and enjoy the year with your baby!
And ditto lwoodruff: you're the client, tell him what you want!0
