What is the best exercise to do?

*posted on WebMD.com

If someone told you right now what the absolute best exercise to lose weight was, would you do it? You might when you read this.

Drum roll, please!

The best exercise to lose weight is: "the exercise you'll do," says Timothy Church, MD, MPH, PhD, a professor at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, La.

Other experts interviewed by WebMD said much the same thing about weight loss workouts.

"The two things that stop people from losing weight with exercise are either boredom or injury," says physical therapist and strength and conditioning specialist Ben Quist, PhD, NSCA.

The truth is that weight loss is about creating a calorie deficit -- in other words, burning more calories than you take in. So, they say, while running at an 8-minute-mile pace might be a great calorie burner, if you're not going to do it, it's not going to help you. Instead, start with something you can do, like walking or working out on an elliptical machine or exercise bike.

I agree. There are exercises that I will likely never do because I just don't like them or I think I would injure myself doing them. I can deal with boredom but if I think an exercise isn't for me then I just don't do it. I find other variations or simply work on something else. I tend to do well at and get the best results from exercises that I enjoy and can have fun with them. I don't think we need to torture ourselves to work on weight loss or management, so find out what works for you and do it.
  • I agree! So what is the one exercise that works for you??
  • I need to exercise or be active while I am doing something fun. I love to dance, but have serious confidence issues and do not like to dance alone. I like to read or watch tv while doing the elliptical trainer. I also like to exercise with a group. For me it is not making excuses. AnnetteC

I love walking on my treadmill. I used to love running on the treadmill, but I'm not quite at that level this time around, so walking it is for now. I also love workout DVDs, especially Jillian Michaels 30-Day Shred.
  • Love this. So very true. My favorite exercise is my bike on my bike trainer. Love this.
