After you run a Half Marathon do you still run short races

I haven't. I sign up for the shorter races for fun, like if it's a Turkey Trot or some kind of themed 5k that centers around the social aspect. I like focusing on the longer distances like the half marathon or full, simply because I like keeping longer term goals in mind.
I do want to battle the 5k and 10k next year - it's been a while since I've raced both and want to see how I've improved. I save those shorter races for the summer, because it gets too hot here to race anything longer than that.
I suppose it all depends on your goals. To me a 5k and 10k are much harder to race than marathons!!!
You know that is a great idea to find 5ks or 10ks that are going to be fu. I do not run to race against other people just myself so being able to see improvement will be great0 -
I dont run 5K's anymore. It goes to time and budget. I'd rather spend money on half and full marathons. And I can walk out my back door and run 3.1 miles at anytime I want. Have nothing against the 5K's, I'm just more focused on longer distance.
See this is why I was thinking if they are worth paying for 5ks anymore.0 -
Every year, for the last 4 years, I've run races from 100 meters to the marathon.
Every race distance has it's challenges. Right now, my two favorites distances are the marathon and the mile, which are two totally different races.
The mile and the marathon are my two favorite distances (at the moment) too!0 -

I'm with you. I'm itching to do another full, but I'm holding out until I'm more adequately trained. The 5K, if done right, is just tough. HMs to me are simple - start at one pace and grind your way down over the last 12 as fast as you can.0 -

If you are just going to go out and run them for fun, then don't waste your money. If you really want to go out and try to lay down a fast time, then it's worth every penny to pay the 25 to 35 dollars for a properly marked, marshaled and USATF certified course.
Yeah, I can step out my door and run 3.1 anytime I want to as well, but that's not a race. I can also step out my door and run 10, 13.1 or 26.2 anytime I want to as well. A race is a race, regardless of the distance and all have their purpose. And I've said it before and I'll say it again. I think that the 5K is THEE hardest distance to properly race and the most painful. Period.0 -
I only run long races (1/2 and full marathons). For me personally, I don't like to get up early for a race that will be over in under an hour. I can go outside wherever and run the smaller distances.0

I still do 5K's because those are the only races I can get my friends to do with me! But if I'm not doing it with a friend, then I don't spend the money. That's what longer races are for!0

Yeah I can see that, I do not have friends that run but maybe when my kids get older and if they like running I can do 5k races with them.0 -
I run mostly ultramarathons, but still run the random short distance race. I like to test myself by running those when I'm fatigued from a ultra race the week before.
I also like to use the short races to check my progress. When I started running ultras, my 5k time improved by 7 minutes, and my half marathon improved by 17 minutes.0 -

If you keep running, you'll have friends who run. finally most of my nay-saying friends have started running and are enjoying those themed 5ks, but a few have taken up half marathons, as well. They say I inspired them b/c I enjoy it so much and seem to always be having so much fun. both of those things are true: I do have so much fun and enjoy it immensely.0 -

I second this regarding the 5k being the most hardest of all!! It is like starting out much speedier than either a training session or any other distance race, getting HR up to maximum and leaving it there! It is painful for sure!!
I loved 10k races to bits and then I did a HM and now that is my favourite of all, ever, it is not nearly half as painful breathing and HR-wise.
5k races scare me lol.0
