feeling rough after a run..

Hi all,
I am VERY new and inexperienced was hoping some of you can shed some light on my problem..
I went for a long run ( well long for me) on Monday - 17km in around 100 mins. I didn't fast was concentrating more on distance than speed and I drank a bottle of water on the way round. However I felt awful for about 24 hrs afterwards, really cold and shivery but with a really bad headache.
I drank tons of water, I always do but it still took the 24 hrs ( and some chocolate
) before I felt 'normal' again. Any tips?

sorry typo - I meant to say I didn't go fast, not that I was fasting. I had brekkie and chocolate before I ran.0

Maybe you didn't eat enough or didn't eat the right nutrition. I have no idea what brekkie is but I would not have chocolate before a run. That kind of sugary stuff is going to mess with your blood sugar - you'll get a spike then a crash. You might have been feeling the blood sugar crash. I would stick with carbs before a run like toast, bagel, banana, etc. And you may need more carbs in general in your regular diet.0

How far and long do you normally run?
Did you eat after the run?
It's very possible that the run was not the cause of how you felt, but was simply a coincidence. It sounds to me like your hydration and nutrition were absolutely fine.0 -
You went over 10 miles at 10 min/miles. It depends how used to that distance and speed your body is. It sounds to me that your body may have gone into a slight shock. Back off in your distance for a few runs and then slowly build up again, ensure you are hydrated before you start your run and as suggested before, eat some carbs about an hour before you set off.0

How does that distance compare to your normal long run? If it's more than 4k longer, then you may have just pushed a little too long too soon. Unless it was super hot that day the hydration sounds fine. Or, as Carson suggests, it might be coincidence -- you could have caught a bug right after the run.0

No it definately wasn't too hot out, we had snow here yesterday. I normally run 10k a few times a week, so last week I increased it up to 13K and was fine and then on Monday 17K but felt rotten. I didn't at the time I could have happily kept going, I will increase it more gradually and eat some carbs before I go and try to avoid the chocolate. I need a bit of luck with that
