I've been diagnosed with hashimoto's too. I am 44yo. I have the antibodies but my thyriod function has remained normal. So no meds so far. I had lost about 40lbs over the last few years thru diet and exercise but now I've gained back 20lbs in the past 6 months while still eating well and exercising 5x week. I've had Crazy mood swings, huge reduction in patience, increased irritability, hot flashes. Endo told me thyroid would probably fail at menopause. I haven't been able to separate perimenopausal symtoms from hashi's. I am so frustrated. I went gluten free a couple months ago. I wasn't sure it made a difference until i reintroduced it and my joint pain increased as well as some poop issues. Now going gf again. Its very hard for me to remain motivated to diet and exercise when I'm gaining weight regardless. Endo told me not to come back until thyroid function is down. So I keep praying that at the next blood test thyroid function will be low so I can start treatment. The thought of going dairy free and soy free is more than I can wrap my brain around right now. I'm the parent of a 6 1/2 yo son and a 4 yo son. I try to tell myself that continuing to exercise and eat well makes me healthier and better able to keep up with them, but man, its hard to stay motivated.

I'm glad this group exists. What has been helpful to you?

Hi there - it sounds like you are already doing all the right things you can do to help yourself. Exercise and diet (eating well, not dieting per se) are so important and usually the hardest change people have to make. I'd suggest getting a second dr's opinion or ask your current doc to let you see your levels. What they consider "normal' - may be normal in a perfect world where those numbers are actually equal to how you're actually doing - in the real world...not so much. Also - I always recommend this book - even though you haven't been diagnosed as hypothyroid yet - "Living Well with Hypothyroidism" It's a great resource. Maybe you will never need meds...who knows, but it gives great tips.

Welcome to our home! <3 I agree with looking for a new doc. Just because your labs "look" normal doesn't mean they are. You might do well with a trial small dose of some thyroid hormone of some sort. And always get copies of your labs. Most Hashi folks do best in the upper levels of the normal ranges for thyroid hormone levels, if yours are near the bottom it could be why you feel a little off.

Treating my body well and listening to it helps me. Resting when I need it and pushing myself when it's acceptable. Trying different things with food has helped me learn to listen for reactions so to speak. You are doing great by starting to get gluten back out since you know it affects you.
